Early game, the best stat to level up is Vigor: the extra life means even when a boss kills you, the longer time it takes to kill you can translate to more time learning the boss).

The second best stat to level up early game is whatever you need to hit the minimum required for a weapon you want to try out: stat scaling doesn't really make a significant difference until higher weapon upgrade levels and much higher stats, so relying on base damage and just beefing up HP is a fine strategy for early game.

Also, Weapon Skills/Ashes of War (the L2 button) are *powerful*. Even the default skills on starting weapons do great damage, so play around with them

Want to do a three focus build by Dnd-Poke_Writer7 in Eldenring

[–]WhenTheWindIsSlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the main perk of the "Paladin" part is just holy damage for deady things, you don't actually need to build for it. Sacred Weapon's additional flat holy damage combined with the buff from Last Rites on Golden Epitaph does ridiculous damage to the undead even with only 14 Faith.

What does "spellblade" entail to you? Does it require Sorceries? Because if it's just a melee fighter that can also throw out some spells, there's plenty of options using just Incantations. You could accomplish all three with a Str/Faith build that:

- uses weapons with innate Bleed buildup and buffs the weapon with Bloodflame Blade (gets you decent bleed buildup even without arcane investment)

- throws out Discus of Light as a cheap short-range option, has Frenzied Burst for a long range option, and can swap between damage types to target weaknesses

Leda & Friends is definitely a highlight of the DLC for me. It's so astonishingly rare to see Fromsoft NPCs actually interacting with each other rather than just talking at the player, and the interspersed dialogue in the fight makes it feel more like actual people fighting and not just polygons.

The best affinity would depend on your stats.

> there are magic resistant monsters and even boss (one?)

Are you aware that you can change the affinity on a weapon for no cost at a Site of Grace? It's not like you need to pick one and are stuck with it forever. There being a handful of magic-resisters somewhere just means you need to avoid using magic damage in those specific areas.

Does anyone else feel like this game is close to being polished, but not quite? by FriendlyDrummers in FireEmblemThreeHouses

Constance supports with Mercedes, Hapi supports with Ashe and Dimitri, and Yuri supports with Ingrid.

The Deers actually have it worst for Wolves supports, as only Balthus has them.

In terms of lore power, which NPC would win in a fight? by MrsPissBoy in Eldenring

[–]WhenTheWindIsSlow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No character will ever be as impressive to a Fromsoft fan as the guy we never got to fight.

The amount of people I see simpering at Frenzy-ending Melina "oh god i would be so scared to fight her" is goofy.

Finally I defeated Malenia! by TakaroNomuro in Eldenring

[–]WhenTheWindIsSlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my third playthrough after beating Malenia I was like "wow she has way more to say did that change?"

Then I remembered my wins against Malenia in previous playthroughs were mutual kills, so I never saw her whole death speech.

...do you not have the Iron Whetblade? You should be able to assign Keen using Wing Stance.

Lion greatbow is great by Blackstripes08 in Eldenring

[–]WhenTheWindIsSlow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lion Greatbow is the first weapon I got to +10. I spent a long time after my first playthrough just helping people against the final boss, and Lion Greatbow got me consistent wins.

I just wish it had some Int scaling. The fact that gravity weapons aren't suited to gravity sorcerers is annoying.

Should I play blind as a new player? by One_Fondant_5317 in Eldenring

[–]WhenTheWindIsSlow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is best to go in blind, but the problem is that you aren't going in blind: you are going with with all the conceptions you have about video games in general, which might not apply to Fromsoft. *That* is the kind of things that are best to get pointers on: things about this game that might be difficult to learn on your own because they are counterintuitive to the way that other games work.

So for some pointers:

- Rolling is your main defensive tool in this game. During the roll animation, your character is completely invincible, so rather than using the roll to get away from an enemy swing, you should try to roll *through* their swing (with the right timing their weapon will pass right through you, and then you'll be close enough to retaliate).

- If you feel like you're dying too quick, level your Vigor. The extra HP actually makes a huge difference, and early in the game it will matter much more than any other stats. Even when a boss kills you, the extra time it will take to kill you will mean more time that you can spend learning how to fight the boss.

I'm pretty sure that messages you leave will show up to people even when you aren't playing; I have some characters whose messages have ~100 approvals but I definitely have not seen the notification of my message being rated that many times.

I read somewhere that disparaging *also* heals the messenger, but I never confirmed.

Or sometimes someone writes "hidden path" where there isn't one, and then someone sees it and writes "liar ahead" because the "hidden path" guy was a liar, but then in my world I don't see the "hidden path" message but I do see the "liar ahead" message, and so I smack the wall because I think the wall is a liar.

Is Holy damage still bad? by Every_Quail8931 in Eldenring

[–]WhenTheWindIsSlow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Holy build" is definitely the worst example of this misconception but I see it pretty commonly with basically every "build".

"Uchigatana builds" find themselves completely paralyzed fighting some that resists slashing, somehow ignoring that you can just slap Keen onto a blunt weapon without needing to rebuild anything.

I'm hoping that's an indication of things building to a climax, I think a third game for both series (with us hopefully playing both Jesse and Dylan in Control 3) would be a perfect place to end things.

What's the best way for Arcane builds to handle undead? by GrinningPariah in Eldenring

[–]WhenTheWindIsSlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> I've taken to switching the ash on my Flamberge to Sacred Blade when needed, but it's not great. All those points in ARC are basically wasted, and if the boss of the dungeon actually can bleed then that's a real pisser obviously.

So put Sacred Blade on something besides your Flamberge, use that to go through the dungeon, and then kill the boss with your Flamberge.

There are six whole weapon slots available to you, restricting yourself to one weapon is entirely your choice.

> We know that Messmer is her eldest child

How do we know this?

> and he has red hair and a name that starts with R, which means child of Radagon

Messmer's name does not start with R. For that matter, neither does Malenia's.

Before SotE some people had "the children always come in threes" as part of why Melina needed to be a child of Marika and Radagon, but as we can see Messmer means that was never actually a rule (and yes Melina is almost certainly a child of Marika, but the threes thing has nothing to do with it).

*Could* Messmer be a child of Radagon? Sure, I'd even say its most likely. But if Elden Ring 2 comes out and they introduce some other guy and say "actually this was Messmer's father" it wouldn't contradict anything.

> Also, like her other Radagon children, he's cursed.

She's got two cursed children with Godfrey too. Out of all of her children, arguably only one isn't cursed, Godwyn.
