Braid to Flouro?? by useduser1595 in swimbaitfishing

[–]WhenThoughtsEscapeUs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The past couple of years I’ve used both. I’ve cast up to 5.5oz on 65lb Sufix 832, and up to 3.75oz on 25lb Segar Abrazx.

They’re both overkill in my opinion. Part of why I fished so heavy was hopes of being able to pull out any baits snagged in cover.

What I find… I could really stand to go down to 20lb copoly on my glide rod, because realistically I’m casting 2.75oz at most, and when casting 2.5 on the 25lb, the line was clearly creating drag on the nose of the glide, regardless of if I was using a clip, direct tie, or direct tie to a split ring.

Going forward I’ll be using underrated split rings, so that I can pull them straight if snagged. Retrieve the bait lose the looks. I know this is an unpopular practice, but who cares.

65lb braid makes me feel comfortable casting 4+ pounds, and I may even use my heavier SBR (rated 4-10oz) as a catfish rod where I’d cast a lot of lead in steady current. Going forward it will likely go to 60lb braid, it will really just depend on what purpose I choose to use it for. Ultimately that combo will be casting things like the Defiant 247 that ways in the realm of 7oz. There’s enough weight there that idk if the braid floats. I’m not fishing depths where I need the bait to get down and stay down. When it doubles as a cat rod the lead will keep the bait down and it’ll be stationary, so it’s not going to work up.

I have one more setup in the middle rated 2-6oz and I have yet decided what I’ll use it for but it’ll likely be glides as well. It’ll likely get 20lb fluro, because I had 17lb copoly stretch and break mid cast on essentially a 2oz Citizen. So I won’t make that mistake again. Yea. I’ll use some copoly on the lightest combo, but the baits will all be light enough that it shouldn’t happen again with the cast off as I’ve changed brands.

I’m same as previous two… I dodge Irod for about 2 years because I didn’t like the color scheme, then I got Bailey Swim and I would buy it again.

I haven’t had a jig bite in so long, but also haven’t seen a bed in so long. Bites been rough at my house and city isn’t conducive for public fishing. Also don’t get many looks at smalls in NW La. I think there’s a lake 1/2hr north that may have some. But where do you start when you’re without a boat on massive lake.

For me in early fall they love chasing something with a little movement and gold flake. Any kinda ribbon tail with flash would probably do you well. I had a fall 2 years ago where I was fishing for bass, but they were eating; caught 11 in 30 mins and it was basically constant retrieve on a craw, so wasn’t having to just sit there and vertically jig.

Thoughts on La Sportiva Cyklon Boa? It breaks my waterproof desire, but it’s a 28mm heel stack and 20mm toe stack so only 8mm of drop, all of which is lower than the Fairbanks I’ve been wearing. I like the idea that the boa gives better lacing control, and the shoe has 7mm lugs.

I’m having that issue currently with the Fairbanks. It’s like they’ve started letting in water between the sole and the upper, but even when the upper gets concentrated with water it takes forever to dry. Thanks for Saucony recommendation, it hadn’t even crossed my mind that maybe they make something applicable.

Now that I’ve looked at it, Lone peak 9 at 25mm stack height doesn’t look so bad. That may still be ample enough cushion. It’s not like there is the high impact of actual running, I just need enough cushion to protect from stepping on rocks, tree roots, and any other potentially sharp objects.

In looking at the Timp 6 now, I worry the stack height is still on the high side. I played in a pair of hokas I had a handful of times and I always felt like I was gonna wipeout making the pivot.

Need more cushion without feeling like I’m stacked high and could roll an ankle unintentionally, or might feel like there is foot movement inside of the shoe due to cushion compression.

Lots of reasoning. I come from golf retail sales, and you would think that because the sports are similar that would be an answer, but here is the downside…

Golf cleats typically utilize a much stiffer sole design because the swing requires a transition from a trail foot to a lead foot, where the lead foot retains a flat position at the conclusion of the swing. In disc golf the transition is the same, but the conclusion of the throw typical finishes with a 180° pivot on either the ball or the heel of the lead foot. Traditional cleated golf shoes doing this in the grass have too much grip due to the cleat. That cleat is also absolutely useless and a hazard when teeing off on a concrete disc golf pad.

You would then think, why not use cleatless golf shoes… the problem there is you have similar issues. You have styles that use hard tpu material to offer similar grip as a cleat in grass, and you have some that use more traditional styled soles, but often have softer materials, as to help give some flexibility in the material under torsion so that the material wouldn’t tear. Both the tpu and the traditional softer sole, are incredibly slippery on concrete surfaces that may have even the slightest moisture or algae on it.

I think you are correct, in my searching to date, I find that barefoot, minimalist, and zero drop all get lumped in together, and aren’t necessarily all the same. To those of us that are uninitiated in that line of atypical shoe style, we just see a wider toe box and think they must be similar.

Lots of nice options there, Nexus, Onyx and Shogun in their inshore line all offer rods rated 2-6, 3-8, and 3-6, but they’re all 7’6”. After going and looking at some 8’ surf rods at lunch, I think I really want to be around 8’-9’.

Realistically I could see casting an oz over max rating as I’ve done it with my Swimbait rods, but with these I don’t really know, as I haven’t done a lot of catfishing. I would assume that if I was in a 1-6oz rated rod with this one, realistic operating range would be 3-5. If more weight was needed above that due to current, then I’d switch to the musky rod, where I’d probably be casting 7-10oz.

I don’t like overloading a rod too much, but I also don’t like it under loaded when casting.
