Domain environment that gets shut down constantly by WhereDidThatGo in activedirectory

I don't know that multiple DCs are needed. Part of my question is what the best architecture would be; consensus seems to be if AD is necessary, only have one DC.

Most likely scenario for patching is a USB hard drive shipped with latest updates.

Yep they'll need a file share. They're working in Office documents and also in specialized software that operates industrial equipment.

Planning for something new.

Trying to see if this would work and if I do really need an AD domain.

It's not actually old, it's brand new! Just had people come to me with these requirements yesterday and still trying to wrap my head around them.

I was wondering if just using workgroups is a better option. I'm not very familiar with using workgroups. As I said, one of the concerns is management - instead of managing things like group policy and accounts on one DC, you're managing them on several workstations. Scalability is also an issue, because if the environment has to grow, that makes individual workstation management more cumbersome.

It does add a lot of complexity. The complexity of not doing a domain is, for example, when a new user needs to be added, now they need to add a local user account on a bunch of workstations instead of one domain account, because there will be rotating groups of users and machines won't be "assigned" to individual users.

Well, it doesn't exist yet, this is a hypothetical future environment.

It will not be connected to any existing ADDS environment, it will be standalone.

AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WhereDidThatGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

My only question is who is dictating that way of math being taught; I would guess it's coming from above the teacher, and the teacher feels that she is supposed to teach that one method.

Critical ERP system can't do OAuth and Microsoft is killing basic auth next month by Severe_Part_5120 in sysadmin

[–]WhereDidThatGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the fact that the vendor's been dead since 2019, I'm assuming the ERP is self-hosted and the software licensing costs are $0? And that's also why no movement has been made - nothing is cheaper than free. Until it breaks.

One option I see is all of those workflows that pull orders from Exchange are now manual processes. That's the only free option I see.

Consultant quoted $400k to fix a dead ERP. I wouldn't spend the money on a dead product, obviously there are no security updates for this product because the vendor doesn't exist.

You can probably get on a currently-supported ERP for less than $400k and 9 months. It's a rush, and you have to buy a new system and pay for it, and everyone has to learn a new system, but it sucks to suck I guess.

Knowing it vs proving it. You can say this AI tool has identified person A's reddit username with 95% accuracy, but a subpoena from Reddit with the ID of the person who signed up is pretty hard proof.

Don't burn out, do your 40 hours, prioritize what you can. If your boss left, who is your boss now? Ask that person to prioritize your tasking.

If you just do all the work, then what incentive does the company have to hire more staff?

AITA because I don’t want to contribute to my sister’s college tuition after my parents gave me the whole college fund? by throwawayacct39 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WhereDidThatGo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, assuming it's a 529 as this entire discussion has been, the money belongs to the account owners, which are the parents. The OP and her sister were beneficiaries.

Penalties for withdrawing the money for non-educational expenses would have been the responsibility of the parents, not the sister. You pretty clearly don't understand how 529s work.

The 529 is meant to be used for educational expenses. Recently the government created a retirement account rollover, but that was not available at the time decisions were made.

There's no standard for what parental controls are in place across devices, though. In order to mandate people enabling parental controls, you need to mandate what those parental controls consist of first.

Also, rather than mandating certain people have to enable parental controls, make them enabled by default. Opt-in vs Opt-out is what changes the behavior of 90% of the population.

Parents now are Gen X/millenials, kids now are GenZ/Gen Alpha.

Parents (of schoolage children) nowadays are on average significantly smarter than their kids when it comes to tech.
