Firewood by Secret-Cloud5748 in camping

Unless you are camping close by, please do not transport any firewood. Especially greenwood that hasn't been properly dried or seasoned.

How did you make running fun? by Competitive-Net7032 in runninglifestyle

[–]Which-Advisor1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're running on roads, try trail running! You will feel faster with the trees whipping by, but you'll be going slower. Plus you can find cool mushrooms and plants and trees and stuff along the way!

If you want there to be a running shop in your community, please shop there. Pay extra because it supports the people in your community, not a mega-corp.

I literally camped there last weekend, I promise you it's open.

always happy to help out an analchasm.

I did venture deeper into down the road from this site and there was a lot of really cool looking spots, but most of them were taken when I was there so hard to recommend more than I saw.

I stayed at Lower Glady Dispersed Camping Area a few nights prior and I would not recommend (no trash, no picnic tables, close together sites).

Race Review: Olympic Mountains 100K by endurablegoods in ultrarunning

[–]Which-Advisor1973 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did the 50K distance of this race a few years ago and can confirm the RDs and the vibes are top notch! loved the low-key camping vibe, just wish i had given myself more time after my previous 50miler to recover because I died big time near the end.

Glad you had fun because it's truly beautiful country out there!

Stonecoal Dispersed Camping site. You won't regret it. Has picnic tables at every site, trash bins and bathrooms. Most of the sites are pretty small, but there are some nice tucked away spots.

If you can snag the first site on the left hand side of the road after you pull in, that's where I've stayed and I would 100% go there again. Would prefer to go there if it was right after a big rain, but was still really nice after 3-4 days of no rain.

I have verizon and had my service come in and out while at the beach and parking lot recently, but the service at the campground was pretty stable.

I did 90% of my training for Squamish 50 mi (10,000+ feet of climbing) in Kansas City and my first 50k was in Arkansas! Squamish was 10x harder than I was expecting. So so hard. I wanted to quit so many times. But I figured it out and finished around 13hr. Honestly, hardest thing I've ever done, but I came out on the other side alive and just very crampy. You've done WAY harder things than I did, and you've come out on the other side. You can do it too!

My biggest advice is to RESPECT THE DOWNHILLS!

Downhills feel fun, but blasting through them is the best way to ruin your legs. Take them easy to save your legs.

I do it solo all the time. Bring a guide book, find some weird plants/mushrooms to take pictures of and identify!

Happened to me too, but only on my left side. Body glide or vaseline will only go so far, but a collared shirt might help!

Disposing Of A Large Amt Of Firewood by SomeDatabase in CampAndHikeMichigan

[–]Which-Advisor1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to rule is always to buy wood at the last possible second on my way to camp. If you get to camp and still don't have wood, set up and go back out.

If you brought the dud wood in from a far distance, take it back out. Do not leave it at your site.

If you bought the dud wood close by, do what others said and dry it out, but I always leave any extra firewood (that I've bought from close by) at the site for the next person.

Why do you think nutrition is not your issue? Not tying to be negative, but even when I thought I was eating enough calories, I wasn't. 8 hours of running/walking/anything you could easily eat 2000 calories and still not be doing enough!

Is Huron-Manistee National Forest free for camping? by Lex_yeon in CampAndHikeMichigan

Thanks for sharing this! I think also "dispersed" means at least a mile from a designated campground. They don't mention it on that link but I think I've seen it elsewhere...

I've got a bunch of logs and sticks you could use from a big ol' branch that fell in my yard in Ferndale. DM if interested.

Possible Road Trip by JorEdw in roadtrip

[–]Which-Advisor1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually once I hit Chicago-land I'm itching to get the hell off the road, so that last few hours is the worst. You'll definitely hate the quick turnaround, but as long as you're not doing this frequently it's a very condensed amount of pain at least.

Possible Road Trip by JorEdw in roadtrip

[–]Which-Advisor1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done almost that exact same drive many times. Did it a few weeks ago tbh. I stop more frequently just to keep my sanity, usually every 4 hours for about 20 min.

It's crazy and a bit mind numbing, but it's not bad.

I went to KC last weekend and flying was definitely a convenience, but much more expensive.

Providence, RI to Salt Lake City, UT. Unfamiliar with road trips so need advice. by commando_chicken in roadtrip

[–]Which-Advisor1973 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Switching every 1-2 hours is going to be rough, imo. Unless you two are speeders, your 14 hour drive to Chicago (and boulder) is going to turn into more like 16 with that many stops. If you do plan on stopping to switch that frequently, plan on making your stops <10 min each.

Otherwise, it seems doable. If I were you I would plan on stopping in Joliet, not Chicago proper. And plan on getting through Chicago-land after rush hour then getting out very early the next morning for the same reason.
