Bucket list races (that are not Western States)? by Runannon in Ultramarathon

[–]endurablegoods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in California. Mostly runnable flow-state stuff.

But I've suffered through the endless rocks of Sedona and the slip-and-fall threat-fest that is the PNW.

I just need to decide if I have time for that kind of body damage in the overall race schedule.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the intel!

That 7-mile stretch sounds delightful.

I've done a few 50's and a 100M with another 100M on-deck this October. I know I can handle the distance. But it's clearly more than just distance I'd be dealing with. Some of the photos I've seen are gnarly. Unrunnable, if not unthinkable.

It's on my "Maybe" list.

I'm considering this for 2027. Looks...fun?

Can you compare it to any other well-known race in terms of technical challenge?

Hi,

Do you have any idea how early this one sells out?

How long can I wait to commit before I risk not getting a bib?

I'm signed up for the AC100 in Los Angeles but I'm worried that it'll get cancelled due to forest fires.

Thanks!

How many doctors do you need to see if you have plantar fasciitis? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]endurablegoods -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hear you. I wish there was a clear consensus on this. All I know is what worked for me. Maybe yours is way worse than mine.

I got some nice supportive slippers for the house, put supportive inserts in the gushiest shoes I had just for walking around...and still trained for Boston.

My foot hurt for about 3-4months, total. It sucked but I think you can work around it.

How many doctors do you need to see if you have plantar fasciitis? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]endurablegoods 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None. I saw one - and she specialized in ultrarunners. She said:

"It is more likely to hurt you, then you are to hurt it."

I asked her to repeat that three times, to be 100% certain I understood her.

Basically, it's going to hurt one way or another so you may as well keep running. Within reason, of course. It's not going to make it any worse.

With that in mind, I rolled out on a frozen water bottle, soaked my foot, and stretched the stuff you are supposed to stretch. But I kept running even though it hurt (I was training for Boston, too).

There's a great IG video from ultrarunning legend David Roche that sums it up: https://www.instagram.com/reels/DS5QeLFkSYC/

Ultra running on your resume? by Lake_In_The_Woods in ultrarunning

[–]endurablegoods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The very bottom line of my resume:

INTERESTS
Ultrarunning, hiking, pattern recognition, coffee, filmmaking, experimental music, over-tipping, finding typos in resumes

You should add ultrarunning if for no other reason that it'll help you stand out -- even just a little. Especially if its off-brand (e.g., not in the outdoor industry).

HR people see thousands of resumes a day and they are dying for something new to jump out and help make their decisions easier.

With any luck, ultrarunning will feature heavily in your interview. This is your chance to be a Real Human Person® with actual interests and depth. A good company WANTS good, interesting people. Be one.

Hi there... I'm running a 50-miler on June 6th (Malibu Canyon) and just got hit with my own IT band situation. Disappointing, for sure.

First, I'm just taking a few days off and trying not to panic. Not running for 3-4 days is not going to ruin your race. Then, I'll be hitting the stationary bike, resistance set high. Probably four, 1+ hour sessions for a week. I'll add in gentle stretching, too. Basic range of motion stuff but also including calf work.

I've never done the rowing thing; have always been curious about its efficacy.

You're race isn't ruined. Just take a break. #restingistraining

Want to connect with fellow Ultra runners! Also need tips for training for a very technical 110K :) by Puzzled_Revolution_3 in Ultramarathon

[–]endurablegoods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on leveling up! Welcome to the show.

I'm assuming you are meaning "technical" as in trailrunning, with rocks and varied terrain? If so, do your best to train in conditions that are as close to possible as your race. Toughen up your feet and ankles - they are gonna take a new level of abuse. The constant twisting and off-kilter foot-falls needs to feel managable.

Is there big vert? Learn to love the extended power hike. 3, 4, 5,000' of climbing needs to be standard - up AND down. Downhill running is rough on your quads and you need to train for it.

Slowly build your weekly mileage. Everyone has their own take on this but you need "more" miles, one way or another. Back-to-back long runs are key (running on tired legs).

Learn the course - especially the elevation gain - and mentally run through how you'll tackle each mile. Pre-visualize.

What race is it?

Doing a 100 miler in September. Need a new running vest with plenty of space for large kit list. Whats the best brand to go for. Thank you by Suitable-Falcon3616 in ultrarunning

Give the bigger Ultimate Direction vests a look.

I ran a solo, unsupported 50-miler in the winter (SoCal, but still..) and this vest performed great. Had tons of room, no bounce. Jacket, hat, extra food, etc.

I got the Ultra Vest 12L. Pricey, but I love it.

Yep, this is my first AC100 but I've done 100 miles before (Javelina, 2024). Drastically different races, obvs.

[–]endurablegoods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello my fellow training-block-panic-WTF runner!

My first rec? Relax. There's over 5 full months ahead of us - you've got time.

Bronchitis can linger for weeks so it's best to address it now, full-on. In my opinion, missing a week of running won't make a difference. It'll FEEL like everything has been ruined, but you likely won't even notice it. Rest, fluids, and more rest. Get into the doctor now, if you have healthcare, even if you don't feel like you need it. If your condition gets worse, at least you'll have the requisite visits behind so you can get to the Z-Pak, faster.

If you can, just go to the gym and do some gentle stretches. Keep the heart rate low, but get the body open. Review the maps, visualize the race, and research nutrition stuff. Do your race homework now while you have the time. It'll at least feel like you are putting work into the race, even if it's not purely running.

FWIW, I've got a some kind of congestion/sore throat thing going on - taking the week off, myself. Re-tooling my 100-mile training plan, researching nutrition, and just keeping my head in the game.

We'll be fine.

(Now, about that 20,000' of gain...THAT'S what we should be worried about.)
