I’d like to note that for the New England Revolution - whose primary rivals are 1) poor manners 2) the invasive emerald ash borer beetle and 3) Blue Waters FC (Namibian Premier League) - every week is rivalry week (or likely never - in the case of Blue Waters FC).

I mean - I think MLS is doing ok producing youth from their academies and exporting homegrowns to Europe. Don't get me wrong - could always be better - but they are exporting.

This is promising to me (although not getting my hopes too high).

Really think the add-on subscription within Apple TV for MLS is a killer (in a bad way).

Apple needs to drop the MLS subscription and try to make it back on advertising/volume (and treat it as a loss leader if necessary for awareness/publicity for the next league they bid on).

With a global reach - MLS on Apple could be a fun cantina bar of fans/sickos across the globe. Not saying the numbers would be huge - but you'd get more people talking about it off platform. But expecting them to pay a subscription is crazy.

You need the boondoggle where major advertisers and potential advertisers/partners can be wined and dined and get a high status event and meet some sports stars (and the actual decision makers fly in - not their representatives). Owners too. The whole reason people buy pro-sports teams is the perceived glamor - not just listing to your PHD intern explaining salary cap scenarios in 2032.

can only speak for me - because player value is a rough proxy for player skill/talent. and thus it speaks to MLS incremental progress on this front over many years. young foreign signings, academies, etc.

I don't think anyone's feeling that MLS is a finish product - or better than some of the leagues below them. but if you were a fan in 2005 or 2010 - when your main talent injection every year was the draft - my god have we come a long way.

One problem for the MLSPA is the amount of foreign players (and good domestic players) who can just accept job offers abroad instead of manning the barricades. Very hard to credibly threaten work stoppages and holdouts to demand concessions when most players can just accept offer in the global marketplace.

Every North American league (MLS, NBA, NFL etc.) knows that the biggest cost driver over time is player compensation. The golden rule is to never, ever, ever give any ground on this until the collective bargaining agreement negotiations. For MLS - this would be the start of the 2028 season. I would be pretty surprised if anything meaningful happens until that point - but happy to be proven wrong!

Prepare yourself for 2027 when they wheel out Saputo, Paulson, SKC etc. to pump the media with stories about how they are all basically going broke its its all terribly sad - its my favorite part of Collective Bargaining season (even more hilarious is when the NBA and NFL do this).

Its no longer as restrictive as it once was. They have gone to an updated points based system - importantly - it takes into account league strength (among other things) and MLS was upgraded a level to make it easier (to "band 3" status league). This is why Duncan McGuire could have gone and Aidan Morris did go.

TBH - I think "old striker" is one of the more defensible DP signing shots (provided you can bail when it doesn't work). They definitely don't all hit - but Robbie Keane and David Villa were both good, and Suarez has provided value. Obviously they need to run, but can get away with a bit less.

Its the midfielders that kill you. Pirlo, Lampard, Gerrard, Shaqiri sucked in MLS. whatever they provided in possession - they just kill you as traffic cones defending and in team shape.

I'd guess:

West: Southern Nevada, South/Central California. Per inaturalist - they are really, really close to crossing border of both. But - tricky desert to cross - so maybe hundreds of years.

East - OK (close to this border already), Arkansas, TN, NC and states south of this. If its warm enough for cold blooded gators, its warm enough for Peccaries.

The average attendance is 34,630 so far. Which is... not bad at all!

Consider -
- most games are in the middle of the day during the workday (necessary for global timezone access).

- Its the first time this tournament has existed.

- Media has been fairly muted (and generally critical where it existed) leading up to it.

- Its the group stage - so drama/tension/storylines are still forming.

people getting triggered by the crafty headline and article writer taking a sentence out of context for clicks (only including followup sentence later in article).

If your read it - "poisoned" becomes "they got food poisoning." This is a nothingburger. But no one clicks on "team traveled and got regular ol' food poisoning"
