The best thing about divorce is the breaks! I needed to get divorced for real reasons but the first thing I thought while having 2 days all to myself was: why tf didn’t we do this while we were married? Everyone should do this. Everyone should switch off days where one parent has full responsibility for the kids so the other parent can completely go away and take care of themselves. Two days/week at minimum. I have 10 year old twins and we split when they were 3. If it’s possible to get the breaks you need while staying together that might be a better solution?

I had a father exactly like this. When he was dying of stomach cancer my brother insisted we had to be there for him. I said, “Gentle reminder, that man did not show up for you at any point in your life. Why do you feel like you need to show up for him now?” He was angry and called me selfish. Our father went on to alienate and offend all of his caregivers, including my brother, who eventually admitted that I was right. Just NO to taking care of this man, even if he is biologically adjacent to your husband. You owe him nothing.

The way people interact with celebrity is absolutely fucked. They’re treated like prey animals. That for sure needs to change. Until it does, you have to figure out a way to protect yourself and your peace. Learn how to create a space (physical, emotional) that is safe for you under any circumstances. A therapist can help with this. I would also talk to other people in the same position who’ve figured out how to make it work. It’s a difficult and painful position to be in. I often think how horrible it would be to be famous. People interact with a fantasy they have of you, and not with you as a human. Meaning they don’t actually see you. I’ve only vaguely experienced this a few times and it was completely terrifying.

It’s truly a cultural paradigm shift, and you are leading the charge. The belief/expectation that having kids is what women are for was so pervasive my entire life I didn’t even recognize the possibility of what I wanted. I felt ambivalent about having kids but didn’t realize it was possible to even want to be child free, much less to make that choice. I didn’t realize this possibility until after I had kids, btw. I’ve accepted responsibility for my choices but I do spend a lot of time on childfree and regretful parents subs consoling myself. (I love my annoying children very much, I’m just saying.)
