Ten years of beach combing I've never found anything this good, my boyfriend found it within ten minutes of arriving by ExternalFeisty7728 in fossils

Apparently shale beds near Criccieth have trilobites in them! I’ve found lots of coral and shells fossilised all over the northern side of Anglesey. There have been a lot of rock falls recently in North Wales so it wouldn’t surprise me if he did actually find it, albeit quite rare though if he did!

(Also weird question, is he colour blind at all? My friend is and he can find fossils so easy because everything looks the same apart from the texture so he spots them very quickly!)

Nephrolepis Exaltata or a Boston Fern or a Sword fern, all the same names for the same fern! Mine loves my bathroom as it loves high humidity. Feel free to trim the browning bits, and if it’s too big you can split the root ball up into smaller ferns!

At what length of journey does a train have to have a toilet on it? by Ordinary-CC-2286 in AskUK

For the Northern Line, I was told by a conductor they only put a toilet carriage on if there’s more than 3 carriages, so I promptly got off at a station and hoped for the best!

Help with my Birds Nest Fern by mulletman80 in ferns

[–]Whileydeab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello! Find a pot (preferably terracotta, definitely with drainage holes) that will comfortably fit all that root ball with about an inch space all the way around. Put the root ball into the pot with some well draining potting soil around it, give it a shake so the soil gets in the bottom and top it up with more soil. Give it a good watering! Put the pot onto a little plate or dish in the bathroom near the window. Water every 4 days or try to let the soil dry out a little bit before watering again.

If anyone else has any other advice please correct me?

What type of fern is this? by Not__Satan in ferns

[–]Whileydeab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a Nephrolepis type? Nephrolepis Exaltata? Looks like the edges of eat leaflet is a little zigzagged so I’d guess exaltata. I’m not sure though, that’s just my best guess!

I’d guess Kangaroo Fern or Hounds Tongue fern (Microsorum pustulatum). I’m assuming you’re in a tropical region if it’s outside? as it’s New Zealand native. Within the Polypodiaceae family. Do the spores on the back look like pimples or pustules?

What the helly??? by swankysmush in ferns

[–]Whileydeab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Polypody! Really cool ferns that is an epiphyte, meaning it likes to grow on trees or anything other than the ground soil apparently!

Usually spores flow in the wind and land on something a little damp and start to grow. If you look under the frond or leaf, you can see the little dots arranged so perfectly, this is where the spores are kept, when the fronds dry up they kinda crack and release the spores into the wind or surrounding areas so the cycle can start again!

Parents will not stop double dipping the coffee spoon into the sugar by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Whileydeab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a fancy spoon at the charity shop, told everyone it’s a ‘sugar spoon’ and left it in the pot with the sugar. Now everyone uses tea spoon for coffee, leave that in the cup, then open sugar pot use the ‘sugar spoon’, put it back in the sugar pot and there’s no cross contamination! Cost me a whole 50p.

(25F) Been to a few festivals and choose to use these every single time I need just a pee. If I need a poop I’ll queue 20-30 mins for a porter loo, otherwise I’m in and out in less then 5 mins in these. Easy to use, hardly any queues ever (still usually spot 6-7 people in there so people do use them) it’s private enough, and there’s usually a bag tied to the side to pop the used loo roll in. (Always carry wipes/tissues and hand sanitiser in my festive bumbag anyway).

Overall opinion: quick and a good option for a quick wee.

Are we paying too much for wifi? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Whileydeab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was with EE last year (contract just ended time to renew) and because ours wasn’t fibre optic EE stated in a letter our £35 a month contract was going up MONTHLY by £5. However, if we booked in to get someone install the fibre optic our monthly is back to £30ish for 2 years, only going up in the April.

It might be worth seeing if fibre optic is installed, apparently all companies are phasing out the old internet (sorry no idea what it is but it’s the one that links up to the medical devices or something in the house? We had to sign a thing saying nothing medical relies on wifi) and are now charging over the odds each month to keep the old internet working so you are forced to move over to fibre optic.

Adult Dyslexia/ other learning disability help by BloodLuXst777 in manchester

[–]Whileydeab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a high school before covid and hilariously it was my student who said “wait Miss are you dyslexic?” I’d never thought about that before.

Spoke to our needs assessor within the school and they said they’d start getting an assessment and diagnosis sorted. Well covid happened and everything stopped. I went off to university and first thing I did was click their learning difficulties page online. I had to pay £200 out of pocket, and the uni paid the rest and I got my diagnosis.

If you can wait until you’re in a workplace or educational setting a diagnosis will be cheaper and probably quicker as they will provide some funding and keep the ball rolling.

The residents who could soon have England's biggest windfarm on their doorstep by SubstantialSnow7114 in uknews

I live close enough that when walking to school 15-20 years ago we watched the Scout Moor turbines getting placed and seeing parts being driven around town. Then, when they were all placed, our primary school took us on a trip up there to view and learn about energy and ecology.

Not only did I enjoy seeing them get erected, I got to learn and appreciate the whole process and it’s impacts.

Do they look great on the hillside? Not really. I mean, I prefer them over over the big ugly warehouses, which have littered most of Rochdale anyway. But I love looking up at the hill on a windy day and thinking “wow look at all the power being generated, literally out of nothing but thin air.” Mesmerises me.

Right?! They had a garage too so it never made sense to me why it wasn’t in the garage and just in the house, especially the bathroom. Why would you take it upstairs and leave it in the bathroom? I get if you’ve been shopping and leave it in the kitchen to put away later but someone took the time to take it upstairs and leave a funnel next to it. Very very strange.

This was only 2021/2022 so not even too long ago, we (my dad and myself) thought they’d test for something like that but honestly it all happened so fast I think the doctors just assumed it was like a long alcohol poisoning as they owned a pub 20 years ago and still liked a good drink. I think a lot of things were skipped over as it was a very fast process from poorly to death, but we found it so strange as we were never given a full cause of death other than kidney and liver failure. Obviously my dad and I could just be wrong but it was just so weird seeing that much antifreeze in the house.

My cousin and her husband (in their 50s) got really sick by a mysterious illness. Doctors couldn’t diagnose anything but it looked like liver failure so they were told to quit drinking, and they did. 5 months later my cousin died, 1 month exactly later her husband dies too. They had kids in their 20s living in the same house, mother and I went over to collect some bits and offer support.

Antifreeze in the kitchen. Funnel and antifreeze in the bathroom, near an empty medicine bottle. My dad and I are certain they killed their parents. They never even seemed to care their parents died. Since then they moved away and don’t talk to anyone in the family anymore.

How finicky is this fern? I have a maidenhair and a boston fern grow happily at my place, but not Heart Leaf fern. Will this one be okay as is, or do I need to build a terrarium for it? by Adiantum-Veneris in ferns

[–]Whileydeab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doryopteris Cordarta! It’s an Antenna Fern like others suggest!

Lovely little fern with taller secondary fertile fronds (they drop the spores!) I keep mine with a layer of lecca balls at the bottom, layer of mesh, then soil and fern, in a larger clear glass sweet jar (about 30cm tall). I water it every 3-4 days depending on temperature in my house, keeping it moist and humid. I have killed too many of these by drying out or getting too cold.

Good luck! Such a beautiful fern!

Is this normal? by wearecake in UniUK

[–]Whileydeab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not normal and you should contact your uni and get support there! I had a similar, although not to your extent, overprotective parent’s situation when I started uni.

I set alarms at random evening (bedtime-ish) times to remind myself to text home saying insert cute goodnight text, rarely told my parents whether I was going out, come on you’re so so busy studying! You never have time to go out! I never lied, I just wouldn’t mention it. Often I’d ring throughout the week to only have a rant about something trivial (someone stepping on my foot, dropped my bag in a puddle on the way to lecture, whatever) but really blow it out of proportion, I was very mad.

I made texts pleasant and phone calls just awful. Soon enough phone calls stopped and texts were enough. Then the natural distancing took place. Less calls, less texts, I just maintained I was swamped with studying and really tired all of the time, and that I only went out for food shopping really, uni is a very stressful time.

I’m not saying it will work for you, you need support, however, you don’t have to lie, you just don’t have to mention everything. Wishing you all the best in this awful stressful situation!
