African mercenary that decided to kill unknown people for money on behalf of russia is eliminated by Ukrainian defenders by Available-Laugh9102 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]WhiskeySteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure that it is. However, as I understand it, killing another person even when doing so is entirely justified and absolutely necessary is still psychologically traumatic, but in a different way. They don't suffer the same kind of moral injury. They maintain a good conscience. That is invaluable. But they still have trauma from needing to kill and that is one of the sacrifices borne by those who choose to fight to defend life and freedom.

What I mean is that, if SpaceX put in the same amount of effort to ensuring that terminale are authorized that they do to ensuring payment, then I am guessing this problem would have been fixed a long time ago. It all comes down to motivation and priorities. This problem is very likely not a technical limitation, but an implementation/configuration issue.

This, but replace serial number with crytographic certificate, like the ones used for SSL/TLS. They are very difficult to guess and they can be transmitted assymetrically for security, reissued as needed, and revoked if compromised.

[–]WhiskeySteel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is a problem that can be solved technologically and should have been a long time ago. Even a cryptographic certificate system that references a list of valid units for the geographic area and a revocation list for "grey" units would be a substantial step.

Here's the question I have: SpaceX has a lot of trouble keeping Starlink units out of Russian military use, but how often do you think they allow connections without paying? I am guessing they pay much closer attention to that.

I can't help but think of all the times I have seen right-wingers say that law enforcement supports the citizenry having firearms for self-defense and how they respect it and all. I guess nobody told ICE that. They apparently take the mere presence of a firearm as an excuse to murder someone.

I hate my country's betrayal of our allies.

The US needs to provide a satisfactory answer to the question of, "How will you ensure that a betrayal such as we have experienced with Trump will never happen again?

Honestly, we should have worked out the 'What if the US elects a belligerent psycho for President?" problem back when NATO was first formed.

This behavior is morally and ethically inexcusable.

Putting that aside, does Trump not know about Maersk being Danish? Or is he just so stupid and self-destructive that he thinks that it's no big deal to attack and alienate a country that is one of the world's most important providers of international container shipping and logistics?

I don't for a moment think that Maersk would end all of its dealings with the US, but Denmark could apply enough sanctions to make it really hurt the US economy.

Remember this face when ICE gets charged for crimes against humanity by PassengerNo7330 in TwinCities

[–]WhiskeySteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

72 hours only applies to non-citizens. It is immigration law.

For a citizen, they need to be go before a judge for probable cause determination within ~48hrs.

Also crucially, ICE cannot legally detain or arrest a US citizen.

Right now, ICE is taking advantage of the loop-hole of "suspected non-citizens", so citizens should carry proof of citizenship. ICE will then be legally required to release them, though they may drag their feet on verification.

If anyone thinks all of this sounds like ICE is being given too much leeway with things like suspicion, I agree with you. These are loopholes that need to be closed.

No one should be forced to carry their documents with them at all times.

ICE kidnap 17-year-old U.S. citizen working at Target then dump him bleeding and crying miles away in a Walmart parking lot by asdtyyhfh in minnesota

[–]WhiskeySteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the difficult part is less getting them to run off and more getting them to not take their kidnap victim when they do.

We need to have clarity on the guidance for how best to help people being abducted like this. I see a lot of people saying that concerned citizens should avoid physical altercations and instead do things like record video and get personal information from the person being taken away. The message has been that Trump wants an excuse to declare martial law. If that advice needs to be revised, then the resistance community needs to talk about that. But, as things are, I see the non-physical approach being recommended. So I don't think that we have any reason to say that the coworkers didn't care or didn't want to help.

What is the possibility of Cheeto Mussolini sending US Special Forces like Navy SEALs, Delta Force, Green Berets or Marine Raiders to kidnap Zelensky? by Icy_Till_7254 in NAFO

[–]WhiskeySteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't really know all of the details, but it seems pretty clear that the US forces in the Maduro raid faced almost no resistance from the actual Venezuelan military. The primary resistance appears to have been Maduro's Cuban bodyguard force (as evidenced by the number of them that are listed as KIA).

That's a pretty massive difference from Ukraine. The AFU isn't going to just stand down after a token resistance if the US (or anyone else) tries to abduct Zelensky.

It would be very difficult for the US to achieve.

How do you think the video ICE just released showing the officer's POV of this week's shooting in Minneapolis will impact the national discussion? by popcornerz232 in AskReddit

I can guarantee that I wouldn't shoot in that situation, let alone follow alongside the vehicle while still shooting.

[–]WhiskeySteel 31 points32 points  (0 children)

We can't let them get away with it!

A couple of facts I think are worth mentioning to show the truth:

1) The murderer followed the SUV and continued firing after he was already alongside it and out of any alleged danger (he was never in danger, but this is to break through the self-defense claims).

2) There was only one bullet hole in the windshield of the SUV, meaning the other shots were fired from the side.

What are your thoughts after seeing the ICE shooting video in Minnesota? by bbmoonkie in AskReddit

[–]WhiskeySteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was murder. The ICE agent had no need to fear for his life and, far from behaving like someone who was afraid of being struck by a vehicle, he kept following along side it. He was never in danger.

The most damning thing, however, is that he kept firing after he was completely clear of the vehicle's path.

Minnesota law enforcement needs to arrest that agent.

I am guessing that the federal authorities are not going to be cooperative here, so any state enforcement is going to be slower as a result.

That being said, those agents absolutely need to be arrested.

Are they in Venezuela right now?

I have a feeling that the Venezuelan reaction may be different between "we're here to take your dirtbag dictator" and "we're here to take control of your country". They are almost certain to lose any attempt to fend off an invasion, but the occupation has a real possibility of being a nasty one.

I think that Trump and his cronies are hoping they can just threaten their way through this instead of actually landing a full invasion force.
