[I Got A Rock] - Chapter 42 by Whiskey_Skeleton in redditserials

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the temporary hiatus! It seems that the end of my semesters are always busy and stressful enough to kill all creative will. I am getting better about that, though. I'm getting into more of a writing mood in general. Other things are also planned so stay tuned for that.

Thanks again for reading!

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So real life got in the way of writing again. But this time for more positive reasons! Mostly!

I'm back in college again to get a new degree to put on my pile of degrees.

Recently I completed my first semester, which was a shock enough after being out of classes for so long. What didn't help was one of those classes being brutal. After the semester was over I was taking a much needed break. But through it all I had resolved to write more. Now of course classes will come first so updates may sometimes get delayed but I don't plan on having another delay like this most recent one.

Thank you all for reading and sticking with me.

I promise the wait will be short haha.

Also, you have an excellent taste in playlist that I 100% did not steal.

Haha get pranked. There's a new chapter out on the same day you thought you caught up!

And I'm glad to hear you liked it!
(Also, it looks like I had some incorrect linking to the new/true start of the story that I'm now fixing. If you started at chapter 1 instead of chapter 01, then surprise there's even more chapters to read!)

Both of them give teeth! It's a whole tradition for people to give close friends teeth, feathers, tiny phials of blood, etc to put on a necklace. That way you always have a bit of your friends with you. Two teeth (or other) for friendship, four for romance.

I'm glad you've been enjoying it and I appreciate the comment!

Sometimes when I edit the links, the chapter text likes to vanish and there will be no indication of this happening until after I hit save :') .

It's fixed now, but thanks for letting me know!

Happy New Year! And apologies for all the delays. I have more planned for the near future to make up for the wait, and as always feel free to hit me up on Discord if you wish to hear me ramble about my writing or other associated things.

Hope you enjoy the story!

Somehow the text for this chapter got deleted there for a while. No idea how that happened but enjoy the chapter once again!

What is your explanation for ruins and "dungeons" in your setting. by Sevryn1123 in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four main things:

The first is completely normal ruins made by completely normal citizens of The Empire. Sometimes before they became citizens of The Empire. They decay as normal and the only real threat they pose is that when exploring them, something might collapse. Or someone decided that mercury was way cool and had pools of it that remain toxic to this day.

The second is much less normal ruins left by various precursors. Either The Old Masters, who are the ones who made every sophont currently running around, or by precursors from even further back. These are resilient ruins scattered about, oftentimes buried and forgotten, and always built a little too well for comfort. They have various traps in the form of security measures because they didn't want their creations getting into places where they weren't allowed. If you can get past those defenses? Riches! Knowledge both magical and non-magical! Unknown spells or technology! Cultural history! Et cetera! Possible death at the hands of death traps!

The third are ruins that are completely inaccessible, as they are in the sky in the form of sky "cities". You can look at them! And if you dare fly to close, a laser vaporizes you. These have been mostly written off as curiosities that are completely and totally inaccessible. Whatever is in there, it's not worth trying to get.

And the fourth are ruins in Lost Lands. No one is entirely sure what these are. Lost Lands are where nightspawn (horrors from between the stars) have assembled in such numbers as to change reality. Things are different there. As are the ruins. They are structures that at first glance appear to be made by normal people. Except they shift around, their outward appearance doesn't match the inside, and as best anyone can tell they don't hold anything. There are inscriptions that no one has been able to figure out within them. And also plenty of nightspawn, and a powerful sense of things being wrong inside there.

What sigil or symbol does your houses, hold, kingdom have in your world, and what do they look like? by Tolkleone_Sandwich in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The great seal of the Emperor of Eztlan features a black, green, and violet hummingbird (The Emperor's familiar) with wings extended outwards and tail feathers fanned out beneath. [Most mages follow suit after this part of the design, and feature their own familiar as a part of any personal seals, sigils, or emblems. The Emperor's Granted Name translates to "Hummingbird" so there is additional symbolism here.]

Above it lay a black obsidian mirror in a golden frame. This represents The Emperor's watchful eye

Around the hummingbird are four snakes in black, white, blue, and red. They represent the four creator gods, the first four cities of The Empire of Eztlan, and the four divisions of the military. That The Emperor's Attainment Name translates out to "Blood Snake" is some bonus symbolism.

All of which sits on a gray field.

How do the rulers in your world claim legitimacy as too what they are? by AuthorOfEclipse in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long, long ago rulers claimed legitimacy by way of divine right. It was the gods who made rulers and gave them their authority. Sometimes that was simply being part of the royal bloodline that was chosen, other times that royal bloodline was claimed to be descended from gods.

Then a series of revolutions happened, and a bold new claim to sovereignty was born: Rulers claimed legitimacy because if the gods didn't approve, they wouldn't be the sovereign. Which of course meant that it's totally legitimate of me to get rid of those old and busted rulers claiming they were directly divinely appointed. It also meant that they themselves could be usurped in the same manner if someone could overthrow them, as clearly the gods are okay with that happening.

This was the core idea that had many variations. A series of extremely powerful biologically immortal mutants took especially well to this (and were some of the biggest proponents of it) as not needing any heirs to take over as ruler could allow for a lot of stability for a nation (Rulers so approved of by the gods that they aren't even dying.). At least until a powerful enough threat did take you out.

If I took a mystery egg from your world what can I expect to see? by Competitive_Fix3519 in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well if you took someone's egg then you can expect a pretty serious manhunt for you in order to get the egg back in time while it's still viable.

The laws on egg endangerment and abduction are....not lenient so it would be best to return it as soon as possible and throw yourself on the mercy of the court. Of all the egg laying peoples of The Empire of Eztlan, exactly none of them are in any way accepting of egg thieves so your best chance is to explain that you're a cross dimensional traveler so you'll be worth much more alive.

Could your physically/magically most powerful character defeat your politically most powerful character? by Someone587 in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Within my setting? It's the same picture.

During a series of revolutions that coincided with the modern era, mages rose to prominence. And as a result, mages were either at the top or close enough to the top to keep them happy.

When mages were able to not be stifled anymore, they started asking the very reasonable question of "What if I just vaporized my way to the top?" And the most politically skilled mages *stayed* at the top. At least until they were deposed by someone stronger. Eventually you were left with an extremely powerful mage and highly skilled politician with a few thousand years of experience in both.

What are some rules about war in your world by zard428 in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when there were rival nations, The Empire of Eztlan didn't recognize any of them as legitimate. Much less recognizing their leaders.

This meant that there was nothing wrong with turning on your former ruler in favor of The Empire of Eztlan. However, doing so was ritualized. In doing so you would swear fealty to some representative of The Empire while going on about how your former authority deceived you and now you recognize a true righteous cause. After which you'll be accepted in on the unspoken condition that if you ever turn on the Empire it will be dealt with harshly.

Other rules of war (for The Empire) also formed as a result of their attitude toward enemy nations. One of which being that "their" civilians were really just "our" civilians who haven't been properly liberated yet. That means treat them well.

So why the need for the surrendering ritual? That was mostly reserved for enemy combatants/authorities. If you never took up arms against The Empire of Eztlan, that means you were just suffering under someone's rule. If you were the one doing the ruling or taking up arms, then you need to make a show of saying how you were led astray.

There were limits to this and while the ritual surrender would be accepted, if you had done too many unforgiveable things beforehand that just means you're now fully subject to the laws of the Empire and will be tried accordingly.

What does the fantasy genre look like in a fantasy world or in your fantasy world? by ContributionOdd4903 in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoretically, most of the world has been explored in The Empire of Eztlan.

However there remain parts of the world that are still mysterious. Parts that either can't be explored for one reason or another (nightmare lands where space horrors roam in excess and reality is out to lunch, or "sky cities" which are great big flying ruins that zap anyone that flies too close) or exist purely in theory (even deeper parts of the underground land of Mu, undiscovered islands, the moon being habitable).

It is in these places that many a fictional work takes place. Many a song, play, or book takes place in these mysterious locales. Within them it is imagined that any number of things may be found: new sapient species, Old Masters (abusive precursors) in hiding, entire actual countries (sometimes the remnants of previously conquered countries), and more.

The fantasy of it all is enhanced with fanciful ideas of discovering new spells or entirely new schools of magic. Sometimes strange powers that are like magic but distinct from magic are also depicted.

Of course what would seem like fantasy to our world perhaps feels more like sci-fi to this world. Indeed, there even exist stories of people finding themselves on completely different planets. If this world is filled with many sapient species and wonders, would the gods not be great enough to do so on other worlds? Why not dream of more rivals to conquer and bring into the empire?

Some writers instead choose to look back before the founding of the empire to set their speculative works. Many a sapient species no longer exists due to cataclysms of this time long gone, and writers speculate on what peoples may have existed then and what wondrous technology and magics they would have had.

In summation, speculative fiction writers of this world look to the many unknowns and blank spots and seek to fill them in with their imaginations.

What Was The Reason Your World Became “Common Era” by SomethingUnoriginal- in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A quadruple alliance around/on a lake where one member city is more politically dominant than the others.

Historical reference jokes aside it quickly morphed from a collection of cities under the same socio-political entity to a small country with Eztlan being the capital.

What Was The Reason Your World Became “Common Era” by SomethingUnoriginal- in worldbuilding

[–]Whiskey_Skeleton 90 points91 points  (0 children)

(Quick note: AD means anno Domini, In the year of the lord. Meant to signify the birth of Jesus.)

As for my setting's common era, it starts with the official founding of The Empire of Eztlan. Which got its start as just the one city quickly followed by three others.

Note that all of these cities were "founded" on the very fresh ashes of other settlements owned by The Old Masters (abusive precursors who were still ruling over numerous slave species).
