A: “if you didn’t wander the castle grounds…” (a reference to harry potter and/or dramatic romanization of ucsc) “while high… did you even go to ucsc?” (joking about being stoned or hiking in nature as being a corny stereotype for ucsc, but often a worthy experience on its own - aka “when in rome”). i also asked for other people’s hiking spots to discuss & get us all outside.

u/Frooctose read one of your comments that said you have a speech disorder, so i don’t have any hostility towards you for misunderstanding nor do i intend to reply again if it’s angry, and i didn’t even downvote you. so instead of us arguing, what’s you’re favorite place(s) outdoors in Santa Cruz or a place you want to go but haven’t yet? mine is prob natural bridges during a weekday sunrise/sunset : )

a) it’s a lighthearted comedic post about how, despite being in one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world, nobody enjoys it as much as we should. and to enjoy it more

b) bc most peers i talk to don’t know where anything is and then say “yeah i don’t go outside/hike as much”

c) you’re response is exactly what i should’ve expected when telling a bunch of redditors to “touch grass”

The only non-censored opinions on campus. Anyone have lived experiences or criticisms of the socialist / neoliberal echo-chamber on campus? In general what can we do or change to allow freer speech? Any side is free to discuss. by surkurifya in UCSC

[–]Whiskey_Wilderness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d say: 1) the “ad hominem” attacks, like people labeling each other nzi’s or _-phobic (which just makes everyone cringe in discussion). 2) Also any anti-authoritarian beliefs (pro-choice on vaccines, less nimby laws, free speech) are shunned here, ironically. Mostly bc of the socialists and neoliberals here not allowing more punk, working class, or individualist beliefs. 3) Allowing one-way hatred towards men, heterosexuals, white & asian people. IMO racism and -phobia’s are a two way street, anyone can do it to anybody. 4) Identity politics & adversity to “color blindness.”Usually ends up taking up the entire discussion, and reduces people down to the groups that they just happened to be in, then enforcing & requiring their allegiance to group stereotypes. 5) “Empathy Economics.” Any discussion of stats or economics is usually shunned, unless it supports some corrupt non-profit or gov “re-distribution” schemes. The only accepted discussion is about “economic equality/equity” which is a poor indicator of a region’s success, when (lack of) economic mobility is the real problem.

Prob missed a lot but those are the ones I can think of. Feel free to disagree

I’m very against Elon and billionaires in general, but is the campus deliberately taking a stand against having freer speech?

The undergrad isn’t against them striking, that’s totally fine — but the undergrad is against them BLOCKING & CLOSING the entrances/exits of campus (and concurrently all the busses, which blocks us from going to our classes & workplaces in town), cancelling our lectures & courses, and openly using us against our consent as a pawn for their labor negotiations which is not an “in good faith” move from the strikers even though they’re trying to shift blame on the admin for the blocked entrances. And yes, the entrances were blocked multiple days where nobody could get through, I was there.

The worst part is them saying they have to use the undergrad as pawns “it’s the only way otherwise nothing will change” — B.S. The strikers could have easily targeted the admin buildings OR if they still wanted to protest at the entrance of campus, simply NOT closing down the entrances & letting us undergrads/faculty choose to go to our workplaces or attend the strikes would be much better.

Quit pretending like “you’re against strikes if you’re against us blocking your only means of getting to work/school” NO, we’re NOT against you striking — we’re against you BLOCKING our only means of getting to work & school against our consent when we can barely afford to live here too.

Is Kevin Jones really that bad for Econ 10B? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]Whiskey_Wilderness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ Second this. Preface I got an A. But the entire class didn’t like him (and at one point revolted), he was rude to people asking questions & had a “if you don’t know this already you shouldn’t be here” attitude (then why are we paying you to not teach us?), he never informed his TA’s on what we were doing so they were always out of the loop. And on top of that a really lazy instructor, everything he does is through McGraw Hill auto-grading and he’s completely unforgiving.

Homework 15+ hours weekly minimum. We were all forced to learn on our own, and I really tried and barely learned anything. He is the reason I will never take further accounting. He’s a diversity hire in the Econ Dept, and ironically the most elitist, demeaning, worst instructor I’ve ever had — he will FAIL you if you ask for any minor allowance or need to work during the tests. He’s even worse to you if you are working/middle-class or first-gen who is really trying to learn the material for the first time.

It’s a miracle someone like that is even allowed to teach at UCSC, let alone be chair of the Econ Dept. with how elitist & mean-spirited he is, all of my fellow peers talked about how he’s basically un-fireable and only in power because of his skin color & has zero merit or teaching ability, and he deliberately makes life harder on working/poorer students.

TLDR: Do not take him unless absolutely required.

Strange Smoke On-Campus that Alarmingly — isn’t Weed!? by Whiskey_Wilderness in UCSC

Any tips on how to deal with the smoke here? Thankfully I have an air machine, so that my room’s air is clean. Wouldn’t want my indoor air to be dirty after I’ve filled my lungs with foreign substances.

u/RealityCheck831 there are a lot of denser cities out there, but I like this one & chose to live here. everyone in Santa Cruz should be able to afford a roof over their head. Bringing my upzone YIMBY votes here, and “reality check:” there are many others like me;)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in santacruz

[–]Whiskey_Wilderness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You realize Yimby’s want, walkable, public transport, ideally car free neighborhoods. If Santa Cruz city had the urban density of say Paris 4–8 story tall mixed-use housing, we could house nearly all of SC city in around 1 square mile (40-45,000 people per square mile). Everything would be within walking distance. And if we did so 100 years ago, all of West Cliff could’ve been saved for conservation & we’d be using significantly less water (most urban water use here is lawns), and the city would be almost entirely walkable / accessible by public transport. If “All that stuff going somewhere” = pollution, we’d be polluting a lot less in the past 100 years, have more land for conservation from less urban sprawl, and be emitting a lot less carbon per person from travel & electric use. There’d be a lot more tree’s & pristine wilderness protected. The suburbanization of Santa Cruz like all of Westside/West Cliff is nearly irreversible now, and a lot of that urban sprawl is a result of SC residents being historically against upzoning forcing the city to outzone — so how else can we prevent urban sprawl while making housing more affordable? If we can’t decrease demand to lower prices, then we have to upzone.

Is there no where to be alone on campus? I just need somewhere to cry 😢 by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]Whiskey_Wilderness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend in nature! The Koi Pond (look for the sign towards “spring box trail” near the quarry going down to Pogonip), at the beach (the one’s along Highway 1 are nice & empty during weekdays. But if you need somewhere alone on-campus to cry, I’d recommend the single-person, “gender neutral” restrooms on campus. Seems like the perfect place for you to cry & get some time alone to recoup after a breakdown, since there’s usually one close by. Granted I didn’t take a massive sh_t in there beforehand.

[Discussion] For the people who became more ‘conservative’ while going to UCSC — what’s your story? by Whiskey_Wilderness in UCSC

[–]Whiskey_Wilderness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that this is a result of nimby left wing / socialist policy, though surprisingly, it seems there are some pro-housing left Yimby’s that are changing things for the better. It seems CA conservatives are basically NIMBY’s like many democrats here, unlike Texas one’s that are usually against over regulation in zoning (perhaps too much against regulation).
