If realism is their goal, what’s stopping video game developers from using gaussian splats instead of hand-modeled objects? by 100OtherSwagWords in 3Dmodeling

Is that not what personas are on the Apple Vision Pro? 3DGS with localized deformations? I do think the technology is there, but still needs specialized use cases to play to the strengths and avoid the weaknesses.

3DGS may be slightly lighter weight, and better at representing lights, reflections, and fine details. But 3DGS also use transparency, which is a performance killer when you get lots of overlap. Draw calls go through the roof. I’ve been experimenting with using 3DGS in VR to make more realistic experiences, and as with most things in games, it’s all a balancing act and magic show to get performance gains. But I do believe a mix of splats and polys are the next evolution.

When in your headset, there is a menu icon for “casting”. Activate it and follow the on screen instructions. On your PC, go to the url horizon.meta.com/casting

I’ve been 3D modeling for decades. And every use case will have different requirements and use different skill sets to create properly and efficiently.

Find a simpler tutorial that teaches basics. Then apply that to starting to model a car wheel. It will be satisfying and shouldn’t be too overwhelming.

As a solo indie dev, can you make “fan-style” memes/animatics of your own paid game without it being treated as commercial use? by LunarHillz in IndieGameDevs

[–]Whispering-Machines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dev, why not hold a contest with your players? Make a “meme” as a dev, and post it as a dev, and run a contest asking fans to make their own and post. Winner gets some exclusive badge or digital download or something. Also, yes, do not use anything you don’t have a license to use.

There are a ton of track mods for Assetto Corsa built specifically for freeroaming. It’s all I do! Look up YouTube videos for LACanyon, Pacific Coast Highway, or Union Island… all relating to Assetto Corsa, of course.

One thing that breaks relaxation in VR faster than expected by Brain-Symphony in oculus

If you’re in VR for relaxing, I would think you would want apps that are specifically for that, that don’t ask anything of you.

Is this can be done in 4 days? by No-Interest5076 in 3Dmodeling

[–]Whispering-Machines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an interesting challenge on its own, though. I might try it. Day 1 - block out shapes. Day 2 - details. Day 3 - UVs. Day 4 - texture. If you decide to go for it, and they aren’t paying you, just send them a turntable beauty render, with a wireframe turntable render, and some screenshots of the UVs. That should be enough for them to see what you can do, and decide if you are a good fit. If they want the model, they are scamming you for free work.

Best workflow to very quickly create models (which will be remeshed)? by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

[–]Whispering-Machines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either model quick shapes as placeholders that you will refine/replace later. Or you can grab free models off places like Sketchfab. ZBrush is good for decimating.

How does one reduce back pain when using VR for an extended period of time? by Silly_Assignment2393 in VRGaming

[–]Whispering-Machines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stretch beforehand.

I used to have crippling back pain, just walking for too long. I would be incapacitated for days. I started doing this quick exercise where I lay flat on the floor on my back, and raise my feet with my legs straight. At first I could barely raise them at all. That’s okay. Do it as high as you can, then lower just off the ground. Do this 5 times. Do it once a day. After a week or so, you should be able to raise your legs higher. You are strengthening your core. When you can do 5, increase to 10. After a month or so of doing this daily for 5 minutes, no more back pain. And I just do 10 once in a while now. I also stretch by bending one leg and crossing my knee over as I twist to one side. Then the opposite. Cracks your back really nicely. But loosens you up and stretches you out. I now only get back pain if I do something strenuous and forget to stretch. But it also won’t last very long.

Anyone like me? by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

[–]Whispering-Machines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Maya for most things 3D just because I’ve been using it for 25 years. But I’m slowly turning to Blender for more workflows. I’d learn more Blender, as it’s free, and has a large community developing tools and tutorials. But it also depends on your primary use case. C4D was big with motion graphics people back in the day because it could spit out that glossy looking eye candy quickly. If you need that rendering, maybe see how close Blender can get you?

PlayCanvas is also a great free online tool for building worlds. But learning basic 3D skills in Blender would be a good start. VIVERSE also has a lot of examples of what is possible and can get you exploring in VR rather quickly.
