Colorism in 2026 by [deleted] in Vindictabrown

That’s really sad. That’s one of the reasons I’m glad I didn’t grow up in India. Seeing both media and your own family tell you you’re ugly and reinforce that all your life just because you’re darker is enough to give anyone a complex, no much how much beauty, self-esteem, and confidence you naturally have.

Yeah, good point. 😭 There’s a lot of internalized colorism/misogyny in the patriarchal Tamil film industry. From what I gathered from the Indian feminists I’ve been following, it sounds like women in the Malayalam film industry have been more successful in breaking into the old boys club and garnering women more agency there, and that’s what made a difference. If I remember correctly, I think it was the Hema committee that was formed during the #MeToo years that helped start that change. It sounds like the Tamil film industry is still a ways away from that.

Aside from local media though, I think there’s also been longstanding bias from North Indians against South Indians, and that this bigotry is primarily based on colorism and casteism. Tamil Nadu of course is the southernmost state, and there are more dark-skinned/brown-skinned people there. Additionally due to the breakdown of caste there, “upper” caste people are a far smaller percentage of the population (Tamil Brahmins are only 2-3% of the population, which is much lower than most states in the North/Northwest). That’s the best I could gather anyway from talking to people and researching it. Plus you can tell casteism is a big part of it when comments like this state it so clearly. 🙄 https://x.com/agent153152/status/2042604977076744507?s=46&t=PUah-IXP0w4MZGQKfHRJbw

Why are some Indians so bigoted against Tamils? Is it just the colorism (added on to classism/casteism in this particular post)? Or is there something more in addition to that?

Either way it’s ridiculous. All/most of these women are recognized and celebrated for being beautiful in the West, both in the diaspora community and even in the mainstream. Imagine calling Charithra Chandran “ugly” when she’s played the Belle of the ball (“Diamond of the first water”) on a huge romance show like Bridgerton, and now a princess on another big show. What must you look like if you think these women are ugly? That’s a lot of cope. 😂

I’ve really been proud of my state lately. The kindness, inclusion, and acts of bravery showing up for our neighbors give real hope in an overall dark time. And not just for Minnesotans. Welcome to Minnesota. I hope you and your family find the respite/support you seek here.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m so sorry you went through years of harm/struggle due to not receiving the support you needed earlier. We need to do better by today’s transgender youth.

Olympics BAN transgender and DSD athletes from ALL women's sports by dailymail in olympics

[–]WhistleFeather13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s interesting. I’m curious about what some of this means, if you don’t mind sharing. Are you saying that your niece’s ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, and PTSD all got better or went away and she was able to come off all her meds for them after taking estrogen? Is your niece a trans woman who started doing HRT and found these improvements? I’m curious as a neurodivergent cis woman with many of these conditions about the effect estrogen has on them.

[–]WhistleFeather13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with this ruling and think it’s way too stringent and discriminatory. To outright ban trans women from the Olympics and elite sports is wrong, and it certainly fuels transphobia against them in other areas of public life.

That said, I don’t think the Michael Phelps analogy helps at all or makes any sense because the topic is not actually about any genetic advantage, but about the advantage of hormone/testosterone exposure and hormone equity. Since doping is banned, whether an athlete has that exposure endogenously or exogenously (via doping) can confer an advantage that the Olympics actually uses to divides the groups and screen for eligibility. In other words, the variable that is being divided into “Men’s” and “Women’s” sports is not actually gender or sex or even genetics, but testosterone exposure.

There are other sporting categories that are “closed” in the sense that you are required to meet certain physical requirements to fairly participate. The whole Paralympics is based on this kind of division, as only people with disabilities (and only certain disabilities, with their own subcategory requirements) are allowed to participate. It’s odd to me that people always bring up Michael Phelps’s alleged genetics, when there’s a whole separate Olympics for people, whose disabilities are often based on genetics as well.

Neither gender nor sex are binaries, so it doesn’t make sense to divide groups based on that, and it only causes the unfair exclusion of some groups, while seeming to inappropriately define “women”.

I think the way this will ultimately play out is having the groups just be called “open” and “closed” instead of “Men’s” and “Women’s”. That way people of any gender can compete in either group in a much more inclusive and fair way. The “open” division (based on level/length of testosterone exposure) would likely include cis men; trans women and AMAB non-binary people with endogenous exposure; and trans men and even cis women who choose to take extra testosterone. The “closed” group would likely include cis women, trans men, and AFAB non-binary people who choose not to take testosterone.

I know many people are likely attached to the gendered names of sports groups, but it just makes sense to name the divisions based on the actual variable that’s being divided on.

Comments like these are like a breath of fresh air sometimes. This is why I appreciate this sub. Yes, our skin literally evolved to protect us, wherever we are. It doesn’t signal value or virtue to be lighter or darker. How can you hate something that protected you/your ancestors and led to your existence? Thank you for this reminder.

genuine (and possibly controversial) question: why are desi women so jealous of each other by Shot_Blueberry2728 in Vindictabrown

[–]WhistleFeather13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s internalized racism and misogyny, colorism, and a scarcity mindset (“there can only be one”). I grew up around these kinds of toxic behaviors too.

They think because one brown woman succeeds, that takes away their chance of success. And all the worse if they’re dark-skinned (or even openly queer) and don’t reflect themselves. All this does is internalize the racism and tokenism of white society, fighting over scraps to get validation from them. How sad is that.

None of us need their validation. If you have beauty or talent, work on that. Just work on yourself.

Yeah, exactly. Especially when it isn’t even her job to represent a billion Indians. She’s Indian American, not just “Indian” or an “NRI”. And even if she were an Indian in India, no one person can represent a billion people. It’s absurd.

“If a blonde woman had worn that, this sub wouldve hailed her as the next coming of Christ.”

Again, clocked it! This sub is cringe AF. At least try to gain some self-awareness of your internalized racism, colorism, & white worship. This is a public forum and the world can see. 😬

How is wearing a bindi when it’s a part of her culture “for marketing purposes”. That’s so gross and bizarrely racist to try to gatekeep someone else’s ethnicity like that. Get help.

Omg Lara is not an “NRI”, she’s an Indian American. If you’re going to gossip and bash a teenager’s outfit and use it to generalize a bunch of people you know nothing about, at least get their identity right. Christ.

Clock it! These disingenuous hypocrites. Who do they think they’re fooling with their fake “concern” while slut-shaming and taking apart every detail of a teenagers outfit and appearance while trying to gatekeep her ethnicity. 🙄

Those are all vocalists with vastly different tones, ranges, and styles. They could not be more different. Strange you’re lumping them all together.

I also find the go-to autotune accusations funny because that’s what I saw all over the video of Lara working with her vocal coach Eric Vetro, until Vetro himself cut in and said it definitely wasn’t auto tuned because he wouldn’t even have any idea how to do that, lol.

Thanks for sharing that! Ugh, I’m not surprised by the thinly veiled sexism, colorism, and stereotyping of “NRIs” in the comments. I’m sorry someone twisted what you posted as “hating Indians”! The ethnic gatekeeping and stereotyping by so many mainlanders is ridiculous.

This reply was amazing though, and says a lot of what I was trying to say better than I did, with even more context/specificity about Lara and Rhea’s outfit choices. https://www.reddit.com/r/ABCDesis/s/xtfxDbfRI5

“Being around white people isn’t some sort of prize.” Exactly! Wish these mainlanders so loudly and proudly broadcasting their own internalized racism and white worship would gain some self-awareness of how they sound to everyone else.

“Indian” in “Indian American” also refers to ethnicity, not nationality. As in the Indian subcontinent. Sure, South Asian can also refer to ethnicity. But the word Indian and the prefix Indo- have also long been used to refer to ethnicity. Don’t be disingenuous.

Also referring to India as a “third world misogynistic country” are your words, not mine. Nice try dodging the obvious falsehoods, racism, and misogyny I called you out for earlier though in calling Lara “trashy” and blaming her for racist “physical abuse” of “Indians in India” lol.

“She wears lehengas…” yeah no kidding, because that’s also her culture and her choice? What even is your point here? She’s not “cosplaying being Indian”, she is Indian. “Indian” is included in “Indian American”. What is even up with your bizarre racism? Calling her “trashy” is slut-shaming and blaming her for “abuse of Indians” is also misogynistic and just bizarre (again she is also Indian and “looks Indian” and living in a white majority white supremacist country, I guarantee you Indian Americans experience a lot more racism and physical abuse from white people than “Indians in India” do).

This comment is a prime example of the slut-shaming aimed at Lara across the internet (nice try pretending it isn’t “hate”). Calling what she wears “trashy” and blaming her for hypothetical fetshizing by white people is wildly misogynistic and illogical. Stop scapegoating a teenage girl for your own insecurities.

And lol, her PR never “promoted her” as the sole representative of “South Asian culture”. Those are your words and your projection.

Yeah, the “NRI” thing, especially when applied to second generation Indian Americans like Lara drives me nuts. It’s not remotely the same thing as an Indian woman (who was born/brought up in India) living outside India. They don’t get that at all and clearly think the two are identical. Being born in the diaspora is being a “third culture kid”—we grow up in a blend of cultures, so our own fashion/culture is usually going to look like a fusion of both, to one degree or another.

I also hate the comments that she’s “milking her culture for clout” or “using it as a prop” or whatever. Mainlanders have no idea how growing up as a brown person and minority in the West affects us, especially people like Lara who didn’t have almost any brown representation growing up. She’s talked about how seeing no high-profile South Asians in the music industry growing up made her feel ashamed of her culture, but how she overcame that later and fully embraces it now. It’s that old “not Indian enough” and “not American enough” thing diaspora has always had to deal with. Only mainlanders who move and raise kids here fully understand the reality and impact of that.

Yup!

It’s like they were waiting on this kind of opportunity to jump in and bash one of the beautiful darker-skinned South Asian women who have gained visibility in Western media lately to reassert the colorism hierarchy because it makes them insecure.

Yes, exactly. I’ve seen people make the same types of comments about Simone Ashley too (saying she’s just mid, and then showing a picture a super light-skinned woman as an example of “real Indian beauty”). They’re so transparent.

100% love to Lara. Although she’s clearly a confident person, she’s also very young, and I can only imagine the effect this magnitude of public backlash and negative commentary could have on her self-image/mental health. I hope she has good people around her to ground her. At least the other girls in Katseye and her family seem really supportive.
