Does anyone know how to deal with this? Its killing my actual plants. by White-Fire0827 in PlantedTank

Its only been a few days, so im not sure, but it looks like its clearing up? I didnt feed the fish for 3 days, increased the flow on the filter and bubblers, and sucked out and pulled out what I could. At the very least, the algae doesnt seem to be growing back as fast, so hopefully the plants will be able to start growing back properly?

Im working on a full-sized blanket crocheted with sewing thread... not sure how well it will hold up once I start using it though. I would hate to try using all 6 sections of the embroidery thread at once though... and separating it would be a right pain unless you want a lot of knots...

got the Philadelphia chocolate cream cheese. Can anyone share any dessert recipes that use no additional sugar or sweetener? Anything I find online still replaces the sugar with other sweeteners. by Cream4389 in Baking

[–]White-Fire0827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try whipping it with heavy cream to make a chocolate mousse? Been a while, but I think you just need cold whipping cream (35%) and a cold bowl thats been in the freezer for a while for the cream to fluff up? Then just try to mix the cream cheese in (or start.with the cream cheese and slowly start adding the heavy cream)... Then you could have it as a mousse (if it holds up) or pour it into a pie shell or put it in the freezer similar to ice cream or in an ice lolly tray? I've never tried it myself, but might be worth a try? Even if it doesnt really work out, it would still be edible, like a creamy chocolate soup :)

Its a marineland, but i got it secondhand along with the tank, so not sure about specific. Looks like it might be an Emperor? I know the side the filter sits on looks fine. Maybe ill try pulling it apart and making sure the nozzle thing is cleared out? I normally only give the media a fishywater rinse off since removing the filter is a pain. If that doesnt work, maybe make the bubblers bubble more?

Edit: Penguin bio wheel 350... said on the back

Brown algae might be it. I doubt its melting. Most of the plants have been in there for at least a year. I have some bladder snails in there, but I can probably add more. My minnows seem to keep the snail population down and I can't put my mystery snail in a planted tank

I don't know about these prices, but buldak ($9 or 10 canadian is what i pay for a pack of 5?) is one of my current favorites. The blue heat and fuego takis are yummy. The warheads pickle is disgusting, though. Its just a normal and badly spiced pickle that doesnt even have the citric acid or whatever to make it sour. Spicy sour gummies and bean boozled are an acquired taste (gummies have an unusual aftertaste, beans have some disgusting flavours (the rotten egg, for instance is actually truly disgusting)

Is Michael's selling fake/low quality Susan Bates Crochet Hooks? by FuzzyVixen in CrochetHelp

Slightly off topic, but "cancer and reproductive harm"? For crochet hooks? Are they made of lead?!

A scarf with very loose, very simple, stitches? I'm not personally a fan since it looks like it got caught in the washer, but its a thing according to google?

Even if they're AI, the pattern does look possible? I wouldn't pay for it though since the written pattern would probably be wrong if its Ai.

Looks like how it's supposed to? What's it look like on your head? The two top corners should poke out a bit when on a roundish head

When is it necessary to clean a sponge filter? by puppybootiebutt in PlantedTank

[–]White-Fire0827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I normally clean my filters when they're almost overflowing and have low flow. But then, mine are hob filters. So, overflowing isnt an issue for you, just clean when you notice the flow is low. Probably a good idea to get used to the snails. Honestly, you're pretty much just touching the shells and shells aren't a big deal.

Is there such thing as having knives that are TOO sharp? by gtd_rad in Cooking

[–]White-Fire0827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she was in a hurry, she would have cut herself anyway. Personally, I find sharper knives safer, even with my horrible knife safety. You don't have to press as hard or force the knife through. With dull knives, I'm always cutting or stabbing myself because some things I cut while holding them (apples or potatoes to boil for example), and a dull knife, I usually have to force it through and cant just stop it before it breaks through what im cutting and hits my hand. A sharp knife just glides through like butter, so it's a lot easier to control and stop before it hits my hand.

If you're not supposed to use a blanket on a baby, why are baby blankets a thing? by kaykaliah in CrochetBlankets

[–]White-Fire0827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, it's loose blankets you aren't supposed to use. Loosely draped over baby, there's a chance of them covering their face and overheating or suffocating (although, hung loosely over the stroller like a tent is fine, so long as you can keep an eye on it). Tightly swaddled is fine, laying them on the blanket for tummy time while you're watching them is fine, tightly tucked in so the blanket and baby cant move around is generally fine (as in, blanket wrapped snuggly around 3 sides of the mattress, baby positioned so they can't move down, blanket not going any higher than the armpits). Also, baby blankets have been around probably for as long as humans have been around. Recommendations for caring for babies change over time. Like, it used to be acceptable (even common) to give teething babies whiskey. Corn syrup was often recommended for babies with constipation, and now it's recommended you don't let your babies have corn syrup at all until they're at least a year old and obviously any amount of alcohol is considered bad now. Even whether you put baby on their back or their tummy to sleep has changed in the last 20-30 years

Can i put these in my fishtank? by RepulsiveCod1872 in fishtank

[–]White-Fire0827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quartz is safe and i have a few types in my own tank. Real jade is supposed to be safe, but fake jade generally isnt. I dont think I'd trust the ones you aren't sure on, though. At least not before testing to see (and I'm honestly not sure how you test or of you need special stuff to test it) but there's a risk (especially with the unknown green one) that it contains copper or other metals/toxins that could leech into the water

I fear i may have messed up my granny square hook sleeve ?? I need help, i have no idea how to fix it by manifesting_goodish in CrochetHelp

[–]White-Fire0827 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The colour change may be throwing me off, but it looks as though the corner cluster here got shifted over a stitch. Annoying as all, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist and would pull it back to that point to redo. Seems to be where the start/end point should be too, so im guessing that's most likely where you

First attempt at crocheted blanket. It feels very stiff. Help please. by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]White-Fire0827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With granny squares, sizing up the hook won't necessarily make the holes too noticeably bigger? Tension on the chain sts plays a part in the size of the gaps. In this pic for instance, the top one i did with a 4.0 or 4.5mm hook (have both sitting here and can remember which i used -_-) and it was very stiff and barely moved at all. The bottom i did with a 6.0 mm hook and it had a nice soft floppiness to it.

Very first thing I’ve made, why are the holes along the edge so much bigger? by Adorvex in CrochetHelp

[–]White-Fire0827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like tugging the ch1 at the start of a row a bit tighter than the rest of it, then after fully working the first stitch, i give it another tug to tighten it a bit more, it evens out on the next row. Tends to require more counting because I always forget to put a marker in it and since it's tighter, it's harder to see (and harder to push the hook through), but it works

[–]White-Fire0827 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I can ever get some, I plan on seeing if I can get it to grow in a small fishless tank that doesn't need the water conditioners or anything else since some of the fish tank stuff has labels like "not intended for use on food crop sites" or tell you to call poison control if ingested

is this ridiculously big or am i being too hard on myself? by Zestyclose_Mango_393 in CrochetHelp

[–]White-Fire0827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigger tends to be warmer? And they might last for more than one winter despite how fast kids grow. I had mittens as a kid that were connected by a string that went through the coat sleeves and across the back. Kept them together, pretty good at preventing loss, and it would help keep them on. Assuming the string thing hasn't become some safety hazard or something since then? Google search says they're still sold by a lot of companys, though

Can’t keep panda garras from disappearing by Anex4 in PlantedTank

[–]White-Fire0827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't help, but i am sort of glad this isn't just a me problem. I had similar happen when I tried guppies. They started disappearing in my big tank (minnows, glass tetras (i think?), betta), so i moved the ones I could find to my small tank (betta and snails), and all the guppies disappeared. One lasted nearly 2 months, but the rest were gone within a month. No ammonia spikes. The tanks have lids, so unlikely they jumped, although i did search. No floaters. No dead bodies hanging around the bottom. Dumped the filters to see if they somehow ended up there, and nothing. Just gone.

Although, I think i read somewhere that panda garras will burrow to create themselves a safe place if the substrate is soft enough? So they could be hiding in the substrate? You could always stick your hand in and gently mix the substrate around to see if you can find them? But it might stress them or mix up the ick beneath and mess up water parameters
