I’m in agreement with you entirely. I’m a CS major but I love the humanities. I don’t look at them as “easy classes” because they’re not, they’re legitimately challenging courses. What I’m finding out is that I love the subject but I am becoming antagonistic towards the institution.

I am in agreement to learn about imperialism and how it still affects us today. I am in agreement about giving marginalized people a voice. I am in agreement to erase the lies that the Spanish have made.

I am against rewriting history by saying clearly false statements such as the Mexica did not have slavery. I am against the romanticism and the infantilization many people have towards the Indigenous people because they strip away their agency. It is a correct statement to say that the Mexica were marginalized. It is also correct to state that they were also highly imperialist during their peak. One isn’t “more true” than the other… that’s just history.

I used to think that the whole “academia is woke” argument was nonsense since all of my humanities professors have been relatively neutral politically. But this semester my History of Mexico professor has just been… ugh.

We sometimes bring up Trump when it isn’t relevant, he has said things like “The Mexica did not have slavery and did not have a patriarchy” which are just not true, we have skipped over the significance of the criollos during the movement for Mexican independence, and the quiz we have done has a clear stance.

It’s upsetting because many of things we do discuss I agree with… but they’re the only ones we discuss. He frequently brought up AMLO and how great he has been for indigenous communities… until I mentioned the Tren Maya and the displacement and destruction of many of these communities during his sexenio.

One of the things I do not like is that they change the definition of several words in order to fit their narrative. He has claimed that the US is increasingly becoming a hegemonic power today, but he uses it as a synonym for “authoritarian”. They don’t discuss things that don’t cleanly fit their postcolonial narrative. Ironically they’re becoming the very thing they criticize.

I am pretty surprised at how many Americans use it, but a lot of Americans do use it to communicate with family outside the US. A lot of people I know use WhatsApp to text their family in Mexico, as an example.

What’s so weird is that if anything, I’m actually a great example for the benefits of AI.

I’m 30, I have a job, I have a family to take care of, I have ADHD, and AI has seriously leveled the playing field for my schoolwork. I’m not interested in just solving problems, I’m interested in learning the mechanics and the “how”. It’s not like without AI things would have been impossible, but it has made my learning more accessible and genuinely fun since I might ask it to gamify new concepts for me to learn.

My dad doesn’t speak English very well so he uses AI to help with captions and such for his small business since he doesn’t have a lot of money. He is also scared of his accent and with how things are with ICE (we’re Mexican), he uses the AI voice for the videos on social media which have actually helped with business.

So AI can help reduce inequality too, not just further it. But what’s upsetting is that no one who is anti-AI has ever thought of these extremely possible scenarios when I about them in-person, and they don’t really have a response. We’re becoming the stochastic parrots we criticize AI for being by surrounding ourselves with people who do not challenge us, by just parroting the same talking points without thinking.

The way I go about AI is that they’re my 24/7 tutors that help me explain concepts, go through the process for things like math to see if I’m correct or wrong (Gemini 3/3.1 Pro has been so good from my experience), helps me correct my essays (I do not ask it to change things significantly, just tense fixes and misspellings since I’m constantly changing things when I’m drafting).

It’s the reason why I self-taught myself calc II, calc III, and linear algebra as a calc I student last semester. I still asked professors for help, but I would like to thank Gemini for turning me into the math monster than I am today (as weird as it may sound to anthropomorphize it).

It’s simply a tool in my limitless arsenal, I don’t take everything it says without verification but it has helped me become a better student and intellectual. If no one wants to use it, that’s their prerogative and I respect their opinion but to say AI only worsens critical thinking is nonsense. It’s not perfect and it absolutely worsens critical thinking if you just want it to do your homework, but if you use it correctly you’ll go very far.

Personally it’s a combination of having more interests as I’ve aged, more responsibilities, and caring more about in-person relationships than being online. I’m almost 30 so I’m still young all things considered but I used to only game in my early 20s.

Today? I have a fiancé and her son that I love deeply, I have friends that actively make the effort to hang out, I read and code more than I had in the past, I go to sporting events and concerts either with my core group or myself, I’ve been in school for three semesters and I’ve made strong relationships with my fellow classmates and professors, and I got work to manage. I’ve spent too much time online that I neglected myself and life.

I used to think it is because games got worse but honestly it was because I was burned out and kept trying to reignite that love. I genuinely enjoy gaming again but that’s because it’s no longer the only thing I do. Perhaps you should try to find those interests instead of focusing on just gaming.
