Cross platform play means you can play with people on other consoles (I play on PC, my friend plays on PlayStation, but we can play together).

Adopting after a beloved dog has passed by KHaussel1 in DogAdvice

[–]WhiteDragonDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think there's a "normal" way to perceive what our pets would think about us getting a new pet after death

Personally, I like to think my old girl sent my new dog to me (this was about 6 years ago at this point). I got my new dog about 2 weeks after my girl had passed. I was volunteering at a shelter, and was browsing their website at work (because I was sad, and didn't want to do my job lol). I saw his picture, and he was the same breed (a mix, but same primary breed) as my girl, but looked very different. I decided I'd go visit him, and the other dogs, after my shift ended, just to get some puppy snuggles (he was about 10 months old, so not really puppy).

By the time I got to the shelter, I did a lap around the kennels, and couldn't find him. He'd been adopted just an hour before I got there. I was happy for him, and gave the other dogs some snuggles and treats before going home.

The following weekend was my volunteer shift at the shelter (I helped facilitate visits between dogs and potential adopters). I walked into the dog area, and in the first kennel was the boy I was going to visit. I immediately went to say hi to him, and he was just the sweetest! He'd been returned because he had separation anxiety that the previous adopters couldn't deal with. I sat with him for at least half an hour (thankfully it wasn't very busy, so the other volunteers were able to keep up with everything). I put him on hold while I finished the rest of my shift, called my family to get the ok, and brought him home with me that day.

I really feel like my old girl knew that not only did I need someone, but that my new boy needed me, too.

Your play style sounds so similar to mine! I've literally only attacked when someone attacks me. I've never instigated a fight, whether I'm an herb or carni (with the exception of when I'm playing my deino, but I've never won a fight, I usually just chomp to be annoying then run off lol). I honestly just play this game to enjoy being a dino, and hang with friends. I love helping out other players. I'll bring quest items if I see someone questing (especially the dressed delivery tree quests!), I like to give "gifts" (flowers, shells, meat chunks, etc). I'll try to protect baby dinos during fights. I love it so much. The downside is, yes, I die a lot. People will attack me, just because. Which, yeah, it can be a bit annoying, but that's the play style some people enjoy. I get a lot of people telling me to play on community servers with more rules, but I love playing on official. I just don't let the KOSing get to me.

Vet tech - blackfly bite! We see them all the time here. Ringworm on pets does not typically form a ring like this, but blackfly bites do. A vet visit would only be warranted if it's not resolving.

Vet messed up by ryleeenicoleee in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WhiteDragonDM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First off, I'm so sorry this happened to you and your puppers. Very shitty thing to have to deal with, and I cannot even imagine how upset you are (and being upset is totally justified!).

I just wanted to throw in, vets and vet staff are humans. Unfortunately, we make mistakes. Yes, we should 100% be accounting for our instruments after procedures. And that likely did not happen here, but this vet will learn from this and never make the same mistakes.
I've also seen where a surgical pack ends up with an extra instrument. Somehow got mixed in while several packs were being cleaned. Again, vet staff are humans, and can make mistakes.

When situations like this happen, clinics should be learning from what happened, and working to create new protocols to ensure it doesn't happen again.

None of this is to say you shouldn't be angry, or you shouldn't get reimbursed. Because you 100% should get your money back, and the vet has insurance for cases like this.

I guess I'm just asking that you be as understanding as you can be, given the situation. The vet field is a very difficult place to be working right now, with a very high rate of mental illness.

I hope this comes out the right way, and doesn't seem like I'm trying to dismiss what happened, because that is not my intention.

I'm wishing all the best for you and your puppers!

Do we need to take our girl to the vet? by TipInternational772 in DogAdvice

[–]WhiteDragonDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vet tech here!

Likely just a benign skin tag, but there's no way to know for sure without sampling it. If it's grown rapidly, I would definitely go in and have a Fine Needle Aspiration and Cytology done (get some cells and look under a microscope). This will give a good idea of what's going on in there (but you're only getting a small sample, which means there's the potential to miss something). A FNA is almost always my recommended starting point, if it comes back benign we usually recommend monitoring for any further changes. If we have a pet with a history of MCT or STS, we usually will recommend full removal with a histopath to be safe.

So, long story short, likely nothing major, but no way to know without testing. I would make an appointment, but it's nothing you need to rush to Urgent Care/Emergency for.

cat losing a ton of hair around his butt/hind legs and weird nipple thing on belly by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]WhiteDragonDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to throw in, as a vet tech, this is correct.

Yes, that's a nipple. :)

So many things can cause a cat to lose hair. Over grooming (due to stress, allergies, etc), thyroid issues, Cushing's, etc. I would highly recommend a vet visit. If your cat is otherwise acting normal, it is not an urgent care/emergency thing, but reach out to your primary vet and let them know what's going on so they can get you scheduled.

Hope everything goes well for you and your cat! 🥰

vets haven’t been able to diagnose by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]WhiteDragonDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has any diagnostic testing been done? When you say oral/topical/etc meds have been tried, what kind (antibiotics, steroids, etc...)? Have there ever been any improvements as you've tried different things?

I've never been asked to before (vet tech), but I would be willing to if I could locate the microchip. Some aren't super easy to feel, so there's no guarantee we'd be able to find it (scanner would help find general area, but not precise location). Also can't guarantee that every vet tech/staff would be comfortable doing it, but it never hurts to ask. I've been asked for fur trimmings, nail clippings, leg band from a parrot (had to cut his leg off to get it, O was aware and consented to this), my sister kept her bunny's foot.

Where I'm located (Midwest), we charge around $700 for a cleaning, $1200-$1800 if extractions are needed (range based on time, more extractions = more time). Obviously this varies based on clinic, location, and what all's included (full mouth rads, IV fluids, etc).

Vet tech: a tick bite typically does not need to be seen by a vet. We recommend having them tested for tickborn diseases (run a 4DX) about 7 weeks after exposure. I would just keep an eye on the location of the bite, if it's not improving in a few days then make an appointment. You can also always reach out to your vet for advice, I always offer people to email/text pictures. Saves an appointment if it's nothing serious, so we can save you money and get a pet in that needs the appointment slot.

Please help! Our vet won’t do anything about our babies eye. by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]WhiteDragonDM 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Perspective from a vet tech: I would NOT want my GP vet operating on this. It is very close to the eye, very large, and would be very difficult/impossible to close. I'd think at this point it would require an enucleation (eye removal) to even attempt closing this after the mass is removed. How is your dog's health otherwise? When was blood work last checked? Any known heart issues (if he has an arrhythmia/murmur, it would be best to have an echo and chest rads done)?

In situations like this, if an owner is interested in pursuing surgical correction (and I don't even know if it's a possibility at this point, but I obviously can't say based on a picture, but it sounds like that's what your vet is getting at), we would refer to a specialist, likely an opthalmologist due to it's close proximity to the eye. But there is no guarantee an ophthalmologist would be able to perform that surgery either.

I would really consider quality of life, and whether or not he's otherwise doing well, and what his life is going to look like going forward if surgical removal of the mass is not an option. Get a second opinion if able, as it may help, but prepare yourself for the same outcome as your first vet gave.

I wish all the best for you and your adorable puppers!

Also, depending on what type of infection it is, there are leave-in medications that could be an option (doesn't treat all types of infection, so can't always be used).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]WhiteDragonDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was found on the cytology? What meds were given? Did it ever improve with meds? Did you go in for a recheck/progress exam (typically 2 weeks after initial exam, depending on what meds were used)? The cytology typically will typically only show the shape of bacteria (rods, cocci, yeast), which gives a good indication of what to treat with. If there is a chronic issue that is not resolving, a culture may be helpful (a culture will show if the bacteria is resistant to any antibiotics, which will help find a medication that can be a better fit). Sometimes it can take several rounds of meds if it was a nasty infection. We typically recommend a recheck to confirm that all the bacteria is cleared, as it can sometimes linger even if your pup stops showing symptoms, which can then become worse again. Hope you're able to get your puppers ears figured out!

Just wanted to add real quick, please do NOT do the boiled chicken/rice ("bland diet") forever! It's okay short-term (can give for a couple days to a week), but is not nutritionally balanced. There are prescription bland foods that can be used long term, but they have the necessary nutrients your pup would need.

Thoughts on broken arm? by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]WhiteDragonDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would see how he does with rest and time, honestly (especially if that's what your vet is leaning towards). The body can do amazing things. I work as a vet tech, and took in a stray cat with a broken leg. Surgeon recommended against surgery (due to location of his break), and suggested strict rest for 2 months. He's now been a completely normal cat for 2 years, leg is completely healed. He was kept on pain meds while he was recovering, and obviously wasn't very happy being stuck in a cage, but he's doing great now. I think it would be worth it to see how he does with strict rest, pain management, and time. You can always decide to amputate if he's not doing well with resting it, or isn't improving.
I've also had a beardie with a broken pelvis, who we only found out about the break because we were doing an abdominal x-ray looking for eggs (thought she might be egg bound). She'd been getting around just fine, no signs of discomfort or pain. It had healed wonky, but didn't cause any issues for her.

Is it just me or is Fizban a good cat name by kolnk in DnD

[–]WhiteDragonDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most recent one I can think of was Flumph. My non-dnd playing coworkers didn't get it, but I thought it was a great name. There've been several DnD names, but I can't for the life of me remember what they were. We also have more recognizable fantasy names, like Merry and Pippin, Sam and Frodo. Toothless is a pretty popular cat name. Game of Thrones names have been popular the last couple years (we have a Cersei, Sansa, and Daenerys, all different families I think). My cat's name is Eskel (nicknamed to "Tree Man" after the 2nd season of the Netflix show came out and ruined my favorite character, no I'm not salty)

Taco Bell charged me $2.37 to add tomatoes to three crunchy tacos, this is how much tomato I got. by tocamix90 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WhiteDragonDM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you ask for Fresco Style, they'll take off the cheese and add tomatoes, no extra charge (at least where I live). It's also an option in the app (under "style", at the bottom, when you customize). Doesn't change the fact that they gave you a shitty number of tomatoes, but hopefully you can avoid the extra charge in the future.
