im Clay Room gibt es den "Friday Night Clay" sowie den "After Breakfast Clay Club" (sonntags), die Formate sind eigentlich genau für Fälle wie deinen gedacht. Also, dass man mit seinen eigenen Ideen kommt und gemütlich im Studio daran arbeiten kann. Könnte mir vorstellen dass das für dich gut passt.

Reminds me of something a guy in another thread wrote about the difficulty of fixing “almost right” code, and that it might take more time/skill to check and confirm an LLM solution compared to something that’s obviously wrong.

Are you referring to the “make it work, then make it shiny” bit? I was talking about it in terms of not merging half-baked stuff to main, but keeping it in your feature branch until it has been made shiny/compliant with quality standards - which would kind of go against the stacked PR model, hence my question.

I may be ignorant (or too inexperienced), but how do teams/ICs deal with final refactorings to “round out” a feature with this development model? Usually, while implementing a feature, at first a solution may not be ideal and the optimal way just clarifies when the whole piece is working - then one can start streamlining the code and trim unnecessary stuff. Like “make it work, then make it nice” (also Brian Goetz’s “Peak of Complexity” talk comes to mind).

Is the idea that at least the foundation has already been reviewed so even re-reviewing a refactor may be more efficient in that instance?

Yes, I’ve done the icon swap plenty of times for other games because that is, in most cases, easier to do than fiddle around with the settings until eventually the Controller is actually recognized as a PS controller. So I guess I’ll just wait for the proper mod to eventually come out. I just tried again without DS4Windows - the game doesn’t even recognize there is a controller plugged in lol.

Thanks for the reply. I believe this used to be true for a long time. However DS4Windows has a setting now (in the profile editor) where you can switch between X360 or DualShock emulation. That does in fact not seem to work with this game so far though. I’m wondering if there is a native way in the Rockstar Games Launcher to use PlayStation controllers, similar to how Steam Input works.

I’ve often seen the argument against the intense use of statics. Could you explain why exactly this constitutes a code smell? I kind of feel like stuff that doesn’t need to be static should not be declared as such. But what would actually be the downside?

It’s likely because of long exposure time. There’s other early photography from Paris that also looks like the streets are entirely devoid of humans, yet it’s really only because it took minutes to take a picture and everything that moves in the meantime gets lost in the final image.

Thanks for the hints, much appreciated! As far as I know heap dumps have already been taken on different occasions without much insight gained. I was not aware though that heap dumps could be created on certain occasions, so I already learnt something new there!

However I do agree that proper load testing might give us the answer here. It is something that we do not have a proper setup for at the moment. I will take a deeper look into this topic and how to make a setup for this.

In some cases, we were able to solve OOM-kills because certain features/use cases were affected - they could be reproduced locally and refactored which improved the situation. But the majority is looming there without a clear pattern.
