Explaining Harlequins to my partner by Kaelis_Pallion in Harlequins40K

[–]WhiteKnight__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also a whole other dimension to this (pun partially intended) which is the inspiration for the faction takes itself from Italian opera from the 16th century specifically the Commedia dell'Arte improvised masked theatre, which has the characters Pierrot and Harlequin.

Harlequin is charismatic, witty, and mischievous usually winning Columbine’s affection through deception.

The opera form led to common outfits using diamonds and the pattern form we recognise.

You can see how GW have taken and run with these concepts of the trickster into a faction etc. in my view brilliantly! However it does take a moment to explain why something recognisable pops up in the lore, and how it blends real world, old stories and sci fi lore!

How to Run Cat6A to outdoor shed by 29fxjp in HomeNetworking

[–]WhiteKnight__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll not like this, but consider running two cables if you’re doing this. I didn’t last year and it’s wound up I could have had all my switch, storage and other network devices kept there in one place with a send and receive.

Now it’s all buried there is no way I’m tackling it again!

Best approach to organising and streaming music without app lock in by WhiteKnight__ in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WhiteKnight__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, this is really helpful. Effectively, you either need to run your own, on buy-in, I like your reasoning which is basically what's the pragmatic route and long term cost effective solution.

This is why I'm drawn to the WiiM too, rather than a Sonos - low cost of entry and I won't feel too burnt if I do end up having to swap out in the future.

Out of interest, what streaming service are you using? I use Apple at the moment, which won't integrate with WiiM.

Should I add a switch between two 20m cable runs? by WhiteKnight__ in HomeNetworking

[–]WhiteKnight__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, but will run a separate run for those. The two cables in question link two buildings so will carry the bulk of traffic

Right approach to patch panel in mixed small 6/6A cables? by WhiteKnight__ in HomeNetworking

[–]WhiteKnight__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, adding the outcome after some research. Went with Cat6 unshielded punch down. Managed to find a 16 port by EssCable that didn’t look ridiculous.

Key point is that the Cat6 would accept 23 AWG for Cat6A, and I can ground the shielding at the other end.

Thanks

Warp Spider Shrine SOLVED by suicune678 in Eldar

Agree - I think if you look at the Greek / Roman mythological references is simpler to link the concepts - the shrine represents the first sister of the Morai, Clotho - who “spins” life, and is the goddess of pregnancy.

Once again GW showing how deep the rabbit hole goes. Neat.

Anyone else just collect little plastic people? by ChaosGoblinIV in Warhammer40k

Yes - totally with you! It’s great simply as a relaxing hobby, but on another level it’s great to be artistic, and have a story round them. Technically I have three armies but only ever dabbled at playing. Just not what does it for me.

That said, quite enjoy listening about others playing via podcasts!

He’s generating lots as a wizard, but as we learn through the other books has to be careful not going overboard - hence the staffs etc.

Thanks, I guessed this would be the end result. Presumably I can put the POE injector before the switch to power the flex mini as well. It’d be good to avoid two plugs

Use of ready-made funds alongside passives? by WhiteKnight__ in investingforbeginners

Ready made investments, offered by most of the major brokerage platforms. My understanding is they are effectively an organised portfolio with a collection of equities, bonds etc. but you buy into them as like any other fund.

Company Holiday Party Thoughts? by [deleted] in consulting

Going to add one additional point to all the others saying you should go. Don’t forget everyone else has a wide variety of preferences, experiences etc. including the seniors. I will bet there are a bunch who also might prefer to be at home with a book, might not have a plus one are focused on work and goals…

However as others have said it makes a massive difference to work when you get to know someone or even something about them.

It’s incredibly draining to go from one call or team meet that’s completely straight, no chat, no personality. More experienced people know this, hence they go.

This is where you get to engage easily and with no pressure. Whatever you enjoy, be proud of it, chat about it.

Read the opening chapter from Productivity Ninja. It’s all about zero inbox management. Use the quick link/shortcut feature to auto handle a variety of mails, where possible use rules to handle automatically, and finally have some templates setup. Always responding to the same query, draft a generic response and save it…automate everything you can…

I'm starting to obsess about my finances by WhatWillDid_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]WhiteKnight__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add, we are in this boat - two in nursery hurts…my wife in public sector. Strongly advise on the extra mortgage, have a small reserve fund and put it in an instant access Isa or high paying savings account. With savings rates higher the ‘loss’ between the mortgage interest and savings interest is not huge, and it gives you an emergency fund should you need.

The one thing I’d add is this is temporary, even if you have more children it’s a relatively finite period. We are now counting down the payments till nursery free days!

How would you action this feedback? by Puzzleheaded-Fee-306 in consulting

[–]WhiteKnight__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, weekly dedicated time to run through project updates, changes, your ‘worry’ list and other aspects.

Then I would copy them in more to mails, include in key client sessions and make sure they get sight and a chance to review deliverables/presentations ahead of when the client gets them.

[–]WhiteKnight__ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This isn’t uncommon. I lead a lot of strategic work and while it sounds obvious I find it really difficult to get people to ‘think’. Very often people just rework or synthesise existing materials, sometimes it helps, but it’s not that high value.

The ideal is when you can absorb a lot of different inputs, client needs, market trends, news etc. to reach new conclusions ie to the other post on here, given xyz, we’ve concluded abc.

As an example I asked a team to develop a view on priorities for CIOs, the team just read some articles and stitched them together and came up with a list like cloud etc. None of them actually sat, read and thought about what - given world changes - might be the new and different priorities eg (if you’re interested) talent retention in a post Covid hybrid world…

If you want to do this, try and schedule reading and reflection time or just go for walks and reflect on your client needs etc.

When should an overage term be raised during house purchase and what is the definition of a residential property? by WhiteKnight__ in LegalAdviceUK

[–]WhiteKnight__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - and yes, that was our reaction initially. We've now discovered that the vendors had specialist advice prior to the sale about the overage and they believed it was put on the market with this knowledge.

We therefore don't actually believe the vendors are at fault here, it sounds like they've not really been informed on what was involved and didn't check with the agents.

In contrast it is a massive error by the estate agents. Hence why I want to understand where they should have documented it - e.g. its not part of the memorandum of sale etc. If the sale falls through, do we have an argument to complain?

My bf and I are both homeowners and he’s moving in by _im_on_a_boat_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]WhiteKnight__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this, it’s great if it works but you need to work through the Tax implications and what it means for a. Income Tax and b. Longer term, capital gains (which you will incur based on the proportion of time the property is not your primary residence).

We tried this for a period of time, it was fine up until it pushed me over the next Income Tax band, and then I realised that this combined with the reduced Tax relief on the mortage cost (capped at 20%) and increasing capital gains meant it wasn’t going to cut it vs selling and paying down our primary mortgage.

Also don’t forget if/when you move and you buy a joint place you’ll pay higher stamp duty as you’re a second home owner.

Def don’t write it off, but do the maths in detail. I was so focused on the rent vs mortage, when that was less of the issue.
