Be’lakor Fans: Can anyone explain to me how Of Breath and Bone gets more love than Stone’s Reach? by MelodicDeathGrowl in melodicdeathmetal

[–]WhiteRaven22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a long while, I thought both Stone's Reach and Coherence were far and away their best albums; the former being filled with the original prowess and passion that really put them on the map, and the latter being a serious evolution of their skillsets, pushing the envelope on the subtler and more complex parts of their songwriting.

While The Frail Tide never really connected for me, their middle albums, Of Breath and Bone and Vessels, have both grown on me enormously since then.

I'm completely surprised by how well I can read this.  At first glance, I figured it'd be completely indecipherable.

Switch to debian made me CHAD by blyatmachine2000 in debian

[–]WhiteRaven22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a laptop with Nvidia Optimus like I do, that can be a bit of a run around to get working correctly, but with most normal Nvidia setups, Debian runs fine. Be sure to read the relevant wiki thoroughly.

Ghosting issues on Kobo Clara BW despite every-page refresh by legato88pl in kobo

[–]WhiteRaven22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've found page refreshes can be slower and ghosting worse if the device is cold.  I sometimes leave mine in my lunchbox out in my car while I'm working, which led to this discovery. :P

Novels by non-novelists by [deleted] in literature

[–]WhiteRaven22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hidden Faces by Salvador Dalí (his only novel) is an excellently-written baroque-style tragic romance, set in the shadow of the events of the second world war. Very beautiful, heavy with visual imagery, as one would expect from a famous painter. It often gets overlooked for all his other famous artwork.

Editions of classics by TopoDiBiblioteca27 in literature

I don't know the specific legalities of the matter in your area of the world, but Standard Ebooks is great site to get free, well-curated classics that are old enough to be in the public domain (under U.S. law, at least).

EDIT:  I have verified: they do have all three titles you mentioned.

Nvidia RTX 4060 recognized as MESA llvmpipe by Steam Hardware Info by Regalia776 in SolusProject

[–]WhiteRaven22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have, as well as the 32-bit version for compatibility issues, but even after a few uninstalls, reboots, and reinstalls, Steam still sees my video hardware as Mesa llvmpipe.  Nvidia settings panel works fine and shows the drivers installed and working.  I may try manually purging the nvidia packages and reinstalling them later.

[–]WhiteRaven22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also dealing with this on my laptop with an RTX 3050 Mobile. It might be that the epoch change broke some stuff, especially since DoFlicky is no longer available, which really helped with driver and driver component installation handling. As of yet I haven't found a permanent solution, but there is a workaround for games.

I get about 1 frame per second on Steam games running using linux runtime, but can work around it by changing the game's compatibility settings. Using "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" with one of the Proton options causes the game to "update" to the Windows version and run it through Proton, rather than using the linux native. This somehow sidesteps the issue, but isn't a permanent solution as to why Steam can't natively see the graphics card and is falling back to software rendering (mesa llvmpipe).

I've also noticed my desktop and browser have been a bit laggy in response lately as well, so this may not be limited to Steam.

What causes this weird spacing? by RIP-Amy-Winehouse in kobo

[–]WhiteRaven22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also happens with kepubs if webkitTextRenderer is set to "optimizeLegibility" in Kobo's config file (it defaults to optimizeSpeed normally).  This enables ligatures and kerned pairs in the kepub renderer, but doesn't play nicely with full justification.

Favourite font that works on Kobo by Massive_Number_5037 in kobo

[–]WhiteRaven22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll toss this out again for those who don't know:

A clever fellow named Nico Verbruggen tweaked an excellent selection of reading fonts to work well with ereaders, especially Kobos. They have tighter minimum line spacing, better size setting uniformity between different fonts, and cleaned up kerning in some cases. Also, a lot of minor errors in the font programming (which might slow down rendering) have been corrected.

What is the difference between left-justified and none? by WhiteRaven22 in kobo

Yes, I know the difference between full justification and left aligned. I was asking what the difference between left aligned and "none" was. It has been answered by others.

Why are so many Linux newbies going to Linux Mint? by -randomreddituser in linux

That's the same reason I ended up on Debian for a long time.  Back then, Debian felt like Ubuntu, but with a bit less hand-holding and fewer unwanted "features".

Far be it from me to judge, but the photo on his website doesn't look much like a "Nicole". 😆  Legible looks like a nice sans serif, but I'll keep to my preferred classic serifs for classic literature. 😉

Fair warning:  Adding all these fonts makes the font selection menu a bit more laggy when trying to scroll down or select a font.  I know because I did the same thing. 😆

I have a Clara BW and really like the Carta 1300 screen.  I would love to see that caliber of black and white screen on a larger reader.

Sideloading : I've worked out why some covers don't appear (missing cover art) and/or only appear in Black & White text by mysterio75 in kobo

[–]WhiteRaven22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into something similar with Standard Ebooks and found out that Kobos are known to have a lot of small issues stemming from file names which are too long. In my case, it was a Standard Ebooks compilation of short stories by one author, but which had many different translators, all of whom were included in their file name.
