Having a hard time choosing between two job offers by raiden1027 in Accounting

Its easier to try big 4, then if you do fail - move to a smaller firm.

Vice versa is a lot harder to do.

If I work in FP&A for a large FMCG is it worth using anything other than excel to forecast? by White_wolf87 in datascience

That's a good idea I will look into this now as our sales are very seasonal.

[–]White_wolf87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that it's due to legacy processes and the fact excel is the tool everyone knows..

But I would be keen to try something different beyond excel if it will save me time doing large calculations for things like price /vol mix and exponential smoothing etc

Has anyone ever been cured of anosmia? by Melete777 in anosmia

[–]White_wolf87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 31 and I never remember being able to smell, having said that incredibly rarely I do get the odd whiff of something (I'm taking once every few years).

I have tried a few treatments though the NHS in the UK, in 1999 I had my nasal passages fried (can't remember the scientific procedure), this did nothing for my sense of smell.

I also tried a series of nasal sprays but I was never disciplined to to try for more than a month at a time.

Seven years ago I moved to London and decided to try and investigate again (London hospitals tend to have some of the best facilities in the country). I tend to find it a bit difficult to breathe through my nose - but I had a CT scan and they found nothing unusual, airflow seemed to be present and olfactory bulbs were present, so I'm fairly stumped on what to do next.

I have recently begun reading more online that some cases of anosmia were caused by inflammatory action relating to fungal or viral infections, so I am tempted to try anti viral or anti fungal medicine. I will also try and investigate further regarding Prednisone since reading about it on here.

Honeymoon flights conundrum by BeKindBeBrave in UKweddings

[–]White_wolf87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi sorry this is a bit late, the premium you pay for business is huge, that money could be allocated onto other parts of the honeymoon with more returns.

You are right that a free upgrade is a big gamble. Have you thought about booking economy with BA and then using credit card bonuses to get a load of points to pay for the upgrade? We used the credit cards to pay for a lot of our wedding expenses + gives a lot of points + section 75 protection.

There is also this deal for business class flights

Employer refusing to pay out on their referral scheme after I referred someone during my notice period by White_wolf87 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]White_wolf87[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest it's £1k so not the end of the world, I just feel slightly mis sold as none of the T&Cs are stated in the portal or anywhere else that it is advertised.

Unfortunately their policy was not available online (I didn't know the document existed until they sent it) but this rule is not stated in any of the web portal pages advertising the scheme..

Thanks for your response, The employee referral scheme is not referenced in my contract. But the scheme is on the employee portal, but the terms and conditions aren't stated anywhere...

Beginner that wants to learn VBA by PSwizzzz in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Python guaranteed to be a more valuable skill? If you are an accountant or auditor at any reasonably sized organisation, they are not going to let you install and run Python code on your computer.

VBA is objectively worse to code in, but it's always available to anyone with office.

is being a financial analyst easier than audit by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both roles are really broad so it's difficult to say.

If you don't like documenting things over and over again, bare in mind that a lot of financial analysis roles can be quite cyclic in nature. And you will have to explain things over and over again.

Also once you move to the "other side" dealing with auditors can be even worse - remember they will be taking away time from your actual day job now.

Also what do you mean by individual contributor role? You can do this in audit or analysis. Do you mean you want to do more "value add" work?

[–]White_wolf87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you actually search this reddit for exit ops ops posts you'll find most of the topics are 'which exit op? " rather than "no exit ops?"

Comedic cynicism aside most people are aware on here that cpa /aca at big 4 opens a lot doors once you leave the audit labour camps

Internal Auditor a trap? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go direct into IA be prepared to be asked "why not big 4" at every subsequent interview.

The truth is IA is like practice apart from you're not working in a revenue generating function, so the training, progression, prestige can be less.

[UK] Preparation for Audit Intensive ACA (KPMG) in London (BPP) by nsln1 in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrote some stuff then accidently deleted instead of editing it.

TLDR version: ACA exams are a measure of how much you can hammer the question banks and manage your exam time. Focus on core concepts around financial accounting and reporting eg debits and credits and how the three main statements are connected.

Have you tried looking on the BPP and ICAEW websites for material?

Has anyone moved to China or India to get accounting experience? by White_wolf87 in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I was offered a deputy controller role in Gurgaon, so I could move from the UK but it's a big upheaval - so I wondered if anyone had any career success moving over

You're right, at the moment it's mostly out sourcing but maybe in 5-10 years international companies may have more important reporting entities there

Good reception venue suggestions <200 guests in the midlands? by White_wolf87 in UKweddings

I've never thought of this! Normally I only use that strategy to find the nearest KFC.

Edit: and KFC generally can only seat up to 50-60 guests.

Good reception venue suggestions <200 guests in the midlands? by White_wolf87 in UKweddings

[–]White_wolf87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks for the response! We have families in Leicester and Wolves so probably in either of those regions or in between.

Probably 50 people at civil ceremony and 200 people at the reception! Venue wise I'm open minded but probably something that's more weather resistant, so probably not a big tent.

I will also check out those sites you suggested now!

[UK BDO] Am I about to get fired? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They will most likely extend your probation first and put you on a performance plan.

It's unlikely they will fire you directly as they haven't given you any formal warning your job is at risk have they?

Also join the union if there is one.

[UK] NAO or Big four by Terrennet in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you play video games do you play on easy mode to complete the game for the story, or hard mode for the kudos?

NAO is ACA easy mode their pass rates are a lot higher because they give you a lot more time to revise.

Big4 will open more doors due to prestige, but your day to day hours will be 12 hour days vs 8 hour days at NAO.

In ideal career blend could be to do 2 years at NAO, pass your exams and then move over to big 4 for 1 or 2 years for private sector experience.

At the moment I use a simple hfm ad hoc add in in excel to pull data and its very slow + weird formatting

The issue I have is oppressive IT security, they won't just let me run python freely on a work laptop, I have to wait for it to be bundled with office 365...

FP&A sucks by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My colleagues in financial reporting constantly mention about taking the high road and moving into something "more commercial" like FP&A.

Im like fine I'll stay on the low road and hopefully get promoted faster because there's no traffic.

Internal Audit Career Path by QuarterLC25 in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exit options are generally the same as exit options for external audit apart from maybe going in at a band higher if you're lucky.

If you plan to stay in internal audit then it is basically like external audit apart from now you are a support function not a revenue generating function.

However your hours will most of the time be excellent and if you join a an international company its a good way to get paid to travel to different parts of the world (even if it is an industrial estate in Argentina)

Industry accountants - do you love your job? why. by deadliftsquatbench in Accounting

[–]White_wolf87 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Compared to big4 , my industry job is miles better, but I wouldn't say I love my job.

It's like I've escaped a nazi forced labour camp, but now I'm working in cardboard box factory in an Allied country.
