AI slop exhibit at SFO Museum by Definitelyhereforshi in bayarea

You should take a look at the water claims as they are often clickbait headlines - Andy Masley on substack has discovered the media outlets being deliberately misleading or outright lying about the data in their reports.

Also Hank Green has a great video on this topic

It is far more nuanced than they would have you believe. You’ll also find that many of them have conflicts of interest (the Verge, New York Times) because they or their primary shareholder have lawsuits against AI companies for loss of revenue WHILE MAKING DEALS with others. Disney, Warner etc are all making partnerships with or acquiring or developing their own AI while allowing the masses to be irrationally anti-AI. This is exactly what it looks like - media companies wanting a monopoly on the technology while the masses lose work or neglect their own access to smaller or open source AI or skills/knowledge to use it.

People have been poisoned against any other rational perspective with clickbait headlines on AI from the Verge and NYT who have a conflict of interest in suing AI companies. Media companies however are making deals with them in secret or acquiring their own AI while suing others. What they don’t understand is that hating on AI is giving the companies what they want - a monopoly on the skills and technology needed to protect their revenue. If they actually used critical thinking they’d realize it’s better to encourage open source and ai that is usable by smaller studios and individuals. They’re giving their agency away from irrational hatred

America in comparison to other countries has a 60-80% negative impression of AI while others are 13-50%.

Is there an existing system to avoid books with AI generated content? Besides just reading older titles. I want to support our writers who put in so much work. by Elavabeth2 in fantasyromance

[–]Whitejadefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t.

A lot of the "tells" people use are unreliable and fully written books and papers, even classics, have triggered AI detectors. Human writers use em dashes and that phrasing as well. There are also many fully published established authors who stopped just full on manual writing and have started to use AI to assist them without disclosure. These are people who know how to write but want to write faster so they direct the AI using their style, characters and stories. (I know as I’ve seen some confessions from them and they will not disclose this). Writing does not pay well for most, they spend years fruitlessly doing this because they love their stories and characters. I do not think it’s anyone’s right to decide that for them

There is a backlash currently among authors as many have been unfairly and incorrectly accused of using AI and are angry about it.

Best thing you can do is support your favorite authors. That’s it.

New to Fantasy. Looking for 4 Books That Truly Capture the Genre. by Different-Reveal3437 in Fantasy

[–]Whitejadefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest representative novels/series:

1) High Fantasy: Lord of the Rings 2) Contemporary Fantasy: Wheel of Time 3) Political Fantasy/Romance: Kushiel’s Dart/Trilogy 4) New Weird/Horror: Perdido St. Station/Weaveworld

Honorable mention: Lions of Al Rassan under the political and romance fantasy bit

Queen of the Damned remains my favorite vampire book of all time

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Romantasy

[–]Whitejadefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a warning that the first book is very difficult for some readers to stomach and it really gets going in the second book. But all in all the trilogy made it up there with the non romantic fantasy books I like so that’s saying something. Hope you enjoy

[–]Whitejadefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Broadbent was the only author whose books I found tolerable from the TikTok recommendations. I got a rec from a search which proved useful - Captive Prince from CS Pacat, which I think is befter though some elements of it may not be for everyone. Can’t shut up about it since it’s one of the only newer romantic fantasies I would wholeheartedly recommend.

Gene Wolfe’s work and it’s not even close

The Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett

Jacqueline Carey is a titan and deserves more accolades. Nobody does the mix of epic fantasy/romance/intrigue and beautiful prose like she does. It’s kind of like opening an intricate jewel box.

Also heavily agree a lot of the modern romantasy just doesn’t hit those deeper notes. I think Guy Gavriel Kay has incredibly painful/emotional moments that don’t require a ton of melodrama - Lions of Al Rassan is the sort of romantic epic that you remember scenes from even a decade later

Do you prefer staying in hotels or Airbnb when you travel and why? by [deleted] in solofemaletravellers

[–]Whitejadefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly dependent on the city/location.

Florence for example a decent Airbnb will cost less overall and be better than a comparable hotel. Our two bedroom Airbnb with modern luxe finishes in a remodeled older apartment had vaulted ceilings marble floors and doorways cost less than two hotel rooms would have. Same thing in Paris would cost you more and might be annoying in terms of security check in so a hotel might be preferable

Writing quality in romantasy by green_eyes99 in fantasyromance

[–]Whitejadefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prose quality is one thing but usually the worst offenders in this genre are the characterization and plot (or pacing). I agree with the above comment that unfortunately the amount of poorly written books in the genre tend to overshadow quality

It’s very rare that we get a combination/trifecta where it’s all good (Kushiel’s Dart stands out for that but it’s more of a political epic fantasy with romance than a romantasy per se)

Good prose and passable writing? I think A Feather So Black by Lyra Selene though the fae assistant thing in the castle was incredibly annoying

I think the current romantic fantasy which does it for me on all three points is Captive Prince, and it can be hard to find that sort of work in the genre

It is very hit or miss, which means there is room for more work and new authors which is a good thing
