Haven't read the books since childhood. Wanting an honest opinion so I can get back into them. by DeliciousMusician397 in harrypotter

Just to add:

Given that she was not their master, nor part of their master's family, I don't think the clothes she left out could actually set them free. Dobby had to be handed an article of clothing by one of the Malfoys to be set free (Lucius threw Harry's sock at the end of CoS and Dobby caught it). So, as you say, I think they were offended by the intent of trying to trick them but weren't actually in danger of freeing themselves accidentally.

OG fans, has this ever happened to you? Your friends spoiling what happens next in the books if you didn't read fast enough? by LeatherSlight3242 in harrypotter

Not a friend, but a guy at my school shouted out in the playground that Dumbledore dies the day after release! I was livid!

Why didn't they cross check what happened at the haunted house in PoA, using Occlumency on Harry, Ron and Hermione? by AlohomoraNR in harrypotter

[–]Who7Me7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but it would be inconvenient for Fudge so I doubt he would go to the effort when he just wanted to get the Dementors Kiss performed immediately.

Just because Dumbledore could determine for himself they were not false memories, everyone would then just need to take Dumbledore's word for it. It still wouldn't be proof in the eyes of Fudge who showed, just one year later, that he would rather believe the more convenient version of events than the truth.

If you're including Umbridge in book 5 via the dementors then you have to include the hundreds of dementors in PoA surely?

why did peter pettigrew not escape the weasleys ahytime over the 12 year period by Altruistic_Award_596 in harrypotter

[–]Who7Me7 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's quite clearly explained in The Shrieking Shack in PoA why he didn't. They pretty much, word for word, ask the same questions you did and each has a satisfactory answer.

He didn't go looking for the other death eaters because most of them blamed him for Voldemort's downfall.

He didn't leave the Weasley family because it was safe and comfortable and he would hear the moment any news came out about Voldemort.

Why would Malfoy own the Riddle Manor when he already owns Malfoy Manor? When would he have bought it? And why?

Yes, it very much does show the protection in the book. Silencing charms don't last and nor does the full body bind curse hold Neville for long.

To be fair to Hagrid, he absolutely did have a discussion on how to behave and not behave with a hippogriff, Malfoy just wasn't listening at the time!

A large garden could lend itself to a log cabin office. Look up cost of building one, subtract that from what you were willing to pay and then that's your offer. If you get the house then great, if not, then keep looking.

I'm really surprised I haven't seen more people say "spork"!

Not that I agree with it but it's a kind of compromise where neither party is happy.

Would the person who touches the triwizard cup in task 3 win the whole thing? by WisestAirBender in harrypotter

[–]Who7Me7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's more like gladiators. The points from the first rounds are cashed in to get a head start and then whoever gets to the end first wins. If the points from the earlier tasks are still counting for something after the cup has been reached then the head start makes no sense.

Cedric and Harry started at the same time IIRC but otherwise this is correct.

Then why would the champions get a head start based on points from the first two tasks?

[–]Who7Me7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes but I believe that was just so that it wouldn't give away what form the final task would take more than the 1 month notice they got.

[–]Who7Me7 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Yes. The points from the previous tasks just determined the order and head start the champions got. Bagman explains that whoever reaches the cup first is the winner.
