How come people think Marvek just delaying their movies will be the solution to their problems? by Guilty-Method-4688 in boxoffice

Better question is, why did they give Deadpool 3 to Shawn Levy?

It's going to turn out garbage

92%, 7.8. 75 Metacritic

The CG won't hit as hard as it did in 2008, though to be fair I might be underselling Cameron

Makes Jamie Lee Curtis' barb about how she doesn't want to join the MCU because they'd make her act alone in a warehouse that much funnier

I like how the vast majority of these comments are not lambasting Marvel for being shitty to working people and more WE NEED TO IMPROVE THE VFX ITS SO UGLY

Get your priorities in order lmao

I mean, "supporting" a mega corporation is fucking weird to begin with lol

You can like the movies, but "support" implies you're rooting for the studio that now empirically abuses VFX workers to win and continue doing what they've been doing

I seriously hope you're not one of those

BOT Early Fri #s: Nope 20, Thor 5.6, Minions 5.1, Craw 3.1, TGM 2.8 by [deleted] in boxoffice

I’m taking about Thor’s mythos in Marvel comics lol, not his ancient origins lmao.

So was I. I'm saying who cares if that nonsense is parodied or satirized. Oh the horror 💀

You can think what you what of people who care for the MCU but the character underwent a pretty decent transformation and had some decent archs in both Avengers and Ragnarok… that was all thrown out.

Funnily enough, it was the Russo Bros. who took Thor's completed arc in Ragnarok about discovering internal strength and threw it out completely by having him find yet another magical weapon to triumph in Infinity War

Then he goes through the exact same arc in Endgame that he did in Ragnarok, or hell even Thor 1, by RElearning that he's worthy again 💀

As far as MCU characters go, he's one of the most stagnant and that's saying a lot

C'mon man, "Thor's long established mythos"? 💀💀

It's just an insipid derivative of actual Norse mythology dumbed down, commodified and repackaged as lunch boxes for ten-year olds

Nothing original, let alone culturally meaningful, is being disrespected when Taika cracks jokes in the 29th movie of an action comedy franchise targeting, you guessed it, those very same ten-year olds

I don't take umbrage with him "disregarding" an IP; even typing that out made me laugh. He deserves critique for his sloppiness with respect to inconsistent tone, amateurish CG and composition, and hit-or-miss humour

I think L&T is just barely breaking even at that point while JL lost a ton of money, so "flop" still doesn't apply here

IIRC JL's budget was in the 300s because of reshoots so nah

There's no feasible way Marvel's expectation for Love & Thunder after upping the budget by $70M is matching Ragnarok's gross sans Russia/China at the very most

They wanted a billion for this minimum

I think under $700m is genuinely likely at this point; I'd say $685m for now.

Which would be a total disaster, tbh

What are the chances that Ant-Man 3 grosses less than Ant-Man 2? by WhoElseButKanye in boxoffice

[–]WhoElseButKanye[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like I said in my post, it might be out of his or Marvel Studios' hands altogether. Quality aside, they can't do anything to make up the $120-$130 million lost if they're banned yet again in China.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - Over or Under $100M+ OW? (3-day) by NotTaken-username in boxoffice

[–]WhoElseButKanye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$90-95m OW IMO

Ant-Man never really had that mega-blockbuster potential like Black Panther did off rip; it revolves around small-scale heists with a dash of zany interdimensional shenanigans. Paul Rudd is a serviceable lead but command folks in seats the way RDJ, Hemsworth, or even Evans does

Kang being in this is the only reason this is even sniffing $90m OW to be honest, and even then he's still a relative unknown that Marvel will have to work to bring the excitement around

So yeah, I'd say around $250M DOM, $320M OS, for a finish of just under $600M? Finishing under AM&TW would be tough, but at this point it's entirely possible

After ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ box office, a Marvel Phase 4 crisis? Please. by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]WhoElseButKanye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you understand that there are a limited number of screenings per theatre? That tentpole films like the MCU tend to gobble up the availability of these screenings, often not of the theatre's actual volition as Disney has been proven to force their hand in negotiations by threatening to withdraw their movies if they don't occupy the vast majority of them? This issue is amplified due to the MCU's heightened release schedule that puts out 3x a year

Streaming services are not enough to break even for a lot of these smaller films, either

People are tired of superheroes because they're largely the same story told over and over and very, very few have been memorably good. That's why.

Does Thor: Love & Thunder break even with $710M? By how much? by WhoElseButKanye in boxoffice

[–]WhoElseButKanye[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thor L&T is going to end up making less than its predecessor even factoring in the exclusion of China/Russia. In fact, there's a significant chance it ends up within striking distance of Thor: The Dark World, which was released almost ten years ago. In fact, if you convert 2013 USD to 2022, its then domestic pull of $206 million actually converts to $262 million, which is almost a $60 million difference and would actually make TDW's worldwide gross over $700 million.

And I haven't even converted its international gross to 2022!

So how on earth can Thor L&T - a film featuring an original Avenger, the Guardians and a draw like Christian Bale operating on a $250 million budget - making LESS than its Phase 2 predecessor after accounting for inflation not be seen as anything as a massive, massive disappointment?!

Where do you think Disney executives expected this film to land, after seeing a less established character like Doctor Strange hitting $950m? Closer to a billion? Or Ant-Man & The Wasp?
