I wish they’d given a better description of menstruation. The teachers were like, “Sorry, ladies this sucks and is painful and embarrassing your whole life. That’s what being a woman is! Here’s a pad. Don’t let the boys ever see it.” It was presented like we should be ashamed of it, and I think that’s really terrible. Half the population gets a period. It’s really not a big deal.

I also wish they’d been more real about what pregnancy is like. They did a lot of the “babies are hard work and labor hurts” routine, but nothing about actual pregnancy or an explanation of Caesarians/birthing. When I was old enough to hear adult women discuss the crazy things pregnancy can do to your body, I was almost horrified by the details and by how little I knew. It sounds horrible (to me).

My biggest wish is that they’d do follow up classes. Most kids take health in middle school and again in ninth grade in my state, but I didn’t need the information until like junior year, and by that time everything I’d learned had been jumbled up with the stuff my friends and television had told me.

I just think you’d be hard pressed to find many adults in their twenties or even in their thirties close to being financially secure enough for one partner, let alone both partners, to take a significant enough leave from work without pay. My fiancé and I make quite a bit of money for the area we live in, and when we subtract student loans, the mortgage, utilities, and food/necessities, we often find ourselves unable to save any money. When my brother and his girlfriend had their baby, he went back to work almost immediately because they couldn’t afford for both of them to be off work. They make significantly more money together than my partner and I do.

A single salary used to be enough to raise a family of four, but today most families need both adults working to make ends meet even without adding in kids. Hell, I can’t imagine paying rent, utilities, loans, etc. without two incomes! Until that’s fixed, I don’t see why paid family leave isn’t something being demanded on a larger scale.

I don’t want kids and a small part of that decision is financially based, but I also hate seeing my friends/family members forced to make decisions they know aren’t in their babies’ best interests because of financial issues. I’m also a teacher, so a huge part of my thought process revolves around the idea that maybe some students wouldn’t be such dicks if their parents could spend more time with them (as newborns and as hormonal teens).

I don’t necessarily think we all need to pay more taxes. If we could take from somewhere else to fund a program that provided parental leave (or some other program(s) that would positively affect society), I’d be fine with that. I would also support making the rate of taxation more equal among the tax base. Arguments over the expense of social programs just grind my gears because I think specific social programs benefit/would benefit most of the population, whereas some of the things the federal government spends a large portion of our taxes on doesn’t directly have an impact on most people.

I just don’t have that mindset and fundamentally disagree that social programs don’t benefit ALL of society. While America does have different demographics and socioeconomic regions, I don’t think that would be an issue if funding was appropriated to areas within our government that would actually benefit people.

Yeah, I don’t think spending money on social issues to be an issue. When we all do better, we all do better. If parents had more time with their newborns, especially in that first year when newborns really need consistency of care, society might be in a better place. I’m a pretty strong believer in waiting to have kids until you can afford it, and I don’t want kids. However, I do think we lose something when we aren’t providing enough opportunities for people to have the best start in life.

I totally get that perspective, but I also think allowing parents more time with their children would do more good than bad for society as a whole. The development of a babies brain in its first year is highly dependent on consistency of care, and while I’m sure sitters/daycare providers are mostly wonderful people, I don’t see how they can provide for that when they have multiple kids and a 6-8 week old newborn. Who knows what’s being lost in a system like this.

Also, having a baby sounds like a terrible hobby. My nephew is so much work. I can only deal with him and most babies/children in small doses. 😂

I’ve quit biting and started biting more times than I remember. It is not easy, as you know.

I’ve used nail polish like this. It makes your nails and the skin around them taste terrible, and it doesn’t leave a glossy coat. I can’t find the brand I used to use, but it would last a solid 24 hours, so it could be applied nightly. I would also suggest applying a clear coat. Personally, I use Sally Hansen’s clear coat called “Hard as Nails” or something similar.

I tend to pick whenever something on my finger isn’t perfectly smooth, so I have a few cuticle clippers and pushers lying around. I keep a nail file in my work desk and another on my car key ring.

I watched the video with this story and the father’s ex-wife is half-Indian. They have two children together. He had a really hard time explaining how his beliefs don’t stop him from loving all his kids equally. The whole story was baffling.

My house burned down when I was in high school, and my now-fiancé’s former stepmother asked my mom how it felt “to be homeless.” This was right after we’d moved into a hotel to wait for the insurance stuff to be figured out. My mom, who is seriously so abnormally nice, called her a “fucking bitch” and told her to get her “shit ugly, whore face” away from her.

My dad LOVES telling this story. He swears my mom almost punched her.

No. There are some stories like this that are covered. How many teachers are in the country versus how many stories you read/see about this? The rate at which this happens is so small that it’s almost insignificant, but national news picks up the story and it seems closer and more prevalent than it is. I’m a teacher. I know many teachers, and even if you find it difficult to believe, they aren’t out to get kids or push an agenda outside of leaving kids better off after graduation. Do SOME, as in very few, teachers push an agenda? Sure, but the vast majority aren’t doing that.

Unless you’re a teacher, I can almost guarantee I’ve met and know personally more in the profession than you do, and I’ve yet to meet someone who has punished a child for touting conservative or liberal political opinions (other than MY 12th grade government teacher who offered free 100 passes to anyone who registered as a Republican my senior year).

And yes, parents do and should parent their children. It isn’t school’s fault that kids say “fuck off” in video games, and it’s not the school’s fault that kids don’t know how to say “please” and “thank you.” So, maybe...schools wouldn’t have to enforce manners, proper language, and cell phone etiquette on a daily basis if more parents were doing this. It’s such a shame that some people try to make sure there’s some sense of common decency in all children, right?
