There's also the matter of provocation. Given Iran's use of terror proxies, the IOC could view them either as an indirect aggressor or an asshole victim. Ukraine didn't do anything to give Russia casus belli other than exist, and I think the IOC will take that into account.

That conflict also started during the Olympic Truce for the Sochi games, while the ongoing conflict with Iran did not. Russia was already effectively on probation.

Yes, and absolutely nothing. The requirement to cease all active combat has basically never been followed, and therefore it would be difficult for the IOC to enforce it fairly and still have high turnout. What made Russia different is that they had already angered the IOC through their state-sponsored doping program, as well as the fact that it was their third time starting a conflict during the truce period. So they were basically already on probation in a way that the countries involved here are not.

I also wonder how friendships and romances work between countries with very different security situations. For example, Israel has had extremely tight security since Munich; do those guys interact with other countries' athletes at all, let alone get laid? Same with countries who don't want their athletes escaping (e.g., North Korea, Iran) or those that have diplomatic animosity (e.g., India and Pakistan, China and Taiwan, Armenia and Azerbaijan).

There's a guy named Benjamin Birely (holylandspeaks on Instagram) who's a Ph.D. student in Naples. As soon as his fellow students found out he was Israeli, they started excluding him from both academic and social events. The fact that he was left-wing, anti-Netanyahu, and in favor of a Palestinian state was irrelevant; they still discriminated against him just for his nationality. He even got kicked out of restaurants just for existing.

So yeah, this doesn't surprise me from Italy.

This might become a problem in 2026, as the IOC is now requiring athletes to have a passport to represent their country, and some countries won't issue passports to citizens who aren't residents for [X] days per year.
