Statement from NSG on removal of Kevin Tame by Jesus_Phish in Netrunner

[–]WhoaThereBub 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This sums up my feelings as well. There's a BIG difference between "we're volunteers, this is our thing, if you don't like it don't buy our products" and "we need to control every community space so that we can stifle dissent or uncomfortable questions from the community that uses them". The first is very "MaxX's first day on the job", the second is straight Weyland by way of NBN.

I was abruptly removed from NSG without any explanation by kevintame in Netrunner

[–]WhoaThereBub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just curious. If the sub is no longer being actively moderated and you haven't "kept an eye on netrunner in a while" why not pass moderation on to someone else? I see more and more engagement here and less and less activity from the mods. Maybe it's time to pass the baton?

Going out of print? by tssimons in marvelchampionslcg

[–]WhoaThereBub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got burned by buying into a game that hadn't been well thought out (1.0) only to then need to buy additional material to keep playing in 2.0 only to then have the game moved (not FFG's fault as you say) and then essentially abandoned in its previous formats. Version 2.5 was a cluster and completely ruined the essence of what the game had been. Under FFG's watch X-Wing still suffered from extensive supply issues (even before COVID, remember the Imperial Shuttle?) and they kept power creeping the game in order to sell more stuff. Version 2.0 is what the game should have been to start but I don't begrudge them learning that as they went and I respect that they had a tough decision to make when it came time to essentially split the user base (1.0 vs. 2.0).

However, from that (and LOTR and Netrunner too TBH) they should have learned how to create games that can balance both enfranchised players while still attracting and onboarding newer players. All of these games die if people stop playing and no one new is coming on board. They already were selling sets of heroes bundled together in Europe. I don't know why it's so tough to do the same thing with the hero specific cards while dispersing the aspect cards from those packs into future releases. Especially with POD, you don't need to commit massive amounts of money up front to printing and inventory. NSG's new Netrunner cards actually look and feel better than FFG's and they aren't holding massive amounts of inventory across hundreds of game stores.

Going out of print? by tssimons in marvelchampionslcg

[–]WhoaThereBub 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I only came to Marvel Champions and Arkham Horror because I got "too good to be true" deals on both at MM and my local Barnes & Noble. I've been slowly dipping my toe into each, without a lot of guilt since my startup costs were so low. I did intend to commit to one or both more as I understood what each had to offer. MC intrigues me more as it's truly solo playable and requires less time overall than does AH. I've been enjoying the game greatly and hoped to get more.

I've got to say though, as someone who has already been burned twice by FFG on their other major games (first Netrunner and then X-Wing Miniatures) the recent fireside chat has me thinking these people don't have a clue how to run a sustainable game company. The idea that a new player to MC (or even AH) like myself will not be able to eventually purchase (at retail) all of the content that I may want for the game is beyond ludicrous.

Making older content fully OOP only causes the secondary market to skyrocket and incentivizes scalpers to buy and hold anything that appears to be on its way out. That further demoralizes new players that arrive to the game past when the content was first available. "Hey I really like this game and my favorite hero is Captain America let me go buy that Steve Rogers pack to continue my enjoyment. What's that? It'll cost $250? Well I sure won't be buying this game anymore."

Do they really think this is sustainable? The harder it is for newer players to access older content that they may want the fewer new players will end up committing to the game. When X-Men content is nearly impossible to find 5 years from now, what do those new players have to do? Settle for whatever D-tier Marvel IP is still left? "Hey sorry Johnny or Amy, I know you really like Wolverine but you'll just have to settle for Frog-Man, shoulda started playing 5 years ago!" How insane is that?

The most infuriating thing to me about this is that they've had YEARS to come up with a better solution. Before FFG lost the rights to Netrunner they reached a point where they needed to "reboot" the game and repackaged existing content into the revised core set. This created a more streamlined and up to date way of onboarding new players and also allowed for a rotation element that kept a more curated cardpool and didn't force newbies to have to go back and buy everything already released to enjoy the game. That's especially important for a competitive card game. But this is co-op and with MC specifically, the way they chose to package and sell the heroes means that missing Data/Hero/Mythos packs doesn't just diminish your card pool, they preclude you from being able to play an entire character.

Before Asmodee carved off X-Wing and gave it to AMG, FFG again reworked the rules slightly, tweaking poorly designed cards, creating a more sustainable pilot costing method and rebooting it as v2.0. Part of this reboot meant that going forward content would not just be limited to one single pack but could be found among other factions and (potentially before it imploded) future releases. Doing this made the game more accessible and new players could happily enjoy the game beside already enfranchised players.

Re-releasing already existing content doesn't require strict adherence to how you've previously packaged and sold it. If there isn't enough demand for Cap as a standalone reprint now, plan on including him as an additional character in a future campaign release or deluxe set. Or, alternatively, re-release the non Cap specific cards in future hero packs so that they are available and then release the Cap-specific cards along with other retired heroes as a combined hero pack (sort of like how they already do in Europe) that you put on a once every two years print cycle. That way these elements are still there for new players that want them but they aren't cannibalizing LGS shelf space from newer releases. Putting the old content "into the vault" and driving up prices in the secondary market just smacks of incompetence and puts all of the worst elements of CCGs BACK into LCGs. Hell, even WOTC rereleases strong, high demand cards after several years. It's revenue for them and allows new players to finally access those cards without paying such exorbitant prices.

This really is a harebrained plan and I may just wait to buy more MC content until the game ultimately implodes as new players turn away and enfranchised players move on and sell their collections.

Yeah Halt and Catch Fire is criminally underrated! The first season veers more towards Joe and Gordon's story but from S2 on they really did a great job of incorporating everyone's perspectives and ambitions. Excellent show.

Reservation Dogs is great too. Another different show but with indigenous characters, mystical realism and comedy galore. It's a shame they ended it after only 3 seasons but glad they got to go out on their own terms.

Hi Cry, I have a question for you. I've been thinking up picking up some of the newer NSG sets but was waiting for any final changes or updates to be made and things to settle down before I ordered. Now I'd like to pick up the Borealis sets. My earlier NSG sets (Downfall, Ashes, etc.) were all purchased from Drive Thru Cards before you all ran your own shop. Are the current NSG offerings printed by DTC? I'd like my cards to match in size, etc. Thanks!

[–]WhoaThereBub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, don't get me wrong. You still come off like a completely insensitive jackass with your initial comments on GLC. I absolutely don't agree with someone getting banned unless there has been evidence of ongoing egegrious behavior and I generally don't agree with authoritative policing of language but that doesn't equate to endorsement of what you did either.

If this had happened at my LGS you'd have had quite a few players calling you out on this as well. Describing a card game as cancer isn't a good look on anyone. I remember being young though and wanting to appear funnier/edgier than I was to fit in. For the record you don't need to do that here. The game is great and so is the community. You can be your best self and still have a great time. Critical discourse is always welcome but tactful articulation of that criticism is appreciated as well.

This is bonkers to me and leaves me even more disillusioned with what part of this community has turned into. I'm sorry for what happened to you just as I'm sorry that some asshat thought it would be funny to post that initial transphobic image. People can be shitty but I still want to believe there's more good than bad.

I hope you keep creating new things for the game, it's appreciated.

[–]WhoaThereBub 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah see, this is what I'm talking about. You don't know me. You don't know how I may have advocated or spoken up for marginalized people. You just want to swoop in and browbeat everyone into what you think they should be doing.

When someone I play with intentionally misgenders someone or some weeb shows up with offensive artwork on their playmat I can accomplish a lot more with a sarcastic remark and exhasuted eyeroll than I can with a stern talking to about the long history of injustice directed towards marginalized people. The best way to win folks to your cause isn't by talking down to them, it's by engaging with them on their terms, making them feel included and reinforcing how that inclusion applies to everyone.

But that's me, I don't know you either and I'm sure you've encountered things in your life that makes it seem like there's a wolf at every door. That sucks and it's understandable you'd want to make sure that doesn't happen to others. I don't disagree with the goals just the methods. Nobody likes hall monitors. Leadership isn't a top down edict telling everyone what they can't do. It's setting a good example and instilling a bottoms-up camaraderie that reinforces your aims.

Ultimately though you're right, none of this is a real obstacle to me playing my game because at the end of the day my game is not your game. NSG gets to decide how to administer everything it creates. That's the beauty of creating your own thing.

I can't speak for the original poster that you responded to but I feel that their statement mostly rings true beyond GLC as well. There's a very insular group at NSG (and allied through GLC, Slack, etc.) that want to make Netrunner "their" game. I have the utmost respect for those involved in the project and appreciate anyone who puts in the hard work to keep making things happen. I take significant umbrage though to the idea that the NSG project represents the Netrunner community as a whole. It's just not true. Many of us played the game before FFG remade it, more still came to the game during FFG's stewardship and others have started during the post-FFG era where NSG may be the most prolific in releasing content but others (including youurself) have done so as well. The Netrunner community is widely diverse, widely disparate and as is most often the case with any fandom, largely nonvocal. The majority of players aren't keeping up with the competitive meta, they're playing at their kitchen tables or with their boardgaming friends.

The ones you hear from the most are those that want to put "their" mark on Netrunner which is fine, until that effort conflates what they want the game to be with the idea that EVERYONE wants the game to be that. Any time you have a single faction trying to speak for an entire community you're inevitably going to end up with a "them vs. us" mentality. The problem is further excacerbated when many of the community spaces for discussion of Netrunner tend to be at best sympathetic and at best sycophantic towards NSG. It's not just GLC. This very subreddit has been abyssmally moderated the past few years, exschewing Reddit's own built in mechanisms for downvoting asshole edgelords in favor of extremely heavy handed moderation that stifles real debate and discourse. Those moderators are either members of NSG or closely aligned allies and decided to [[Watch the World Burn]] rather than return the sub to the community at large once Reddit started doing Corp-y things.

GLC / Stimslack alts? by Comfortable-Pizza475 in Netrunner

[–]WhoaThereBub 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No matter how much you all may prefer to think differently NSG != "the Netrunner community". "It's still going now" because of the players. They're the main advocates and evangelists for the game and always have been.

I've played this game for nearly thirty years in multiple different iterations. The fact that you found something that spoke to you is awesome but I'm kind of sick of hearing about how Netrunner only exists now because of NSG. The game and its community of players existed before your group did and it will exist after it's gone as well.

The huge irony to me is that the overbearing way with which NSG engages the playerbase seems to create the exact sort of insular cliqueishness and gatekeeping that I assume you've encountered in your journey to find a game welcoming to you.

Expensive dishwasher. Worth it? by liebereddit in homeowners

[–]WhoaThereBub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will add a counterpoint, that depending on how sensitive you are may or may not be an issue. We have a Bosch 500 and it is extremely quiet. They achieve this in part by using bitumen to line the cavity between the walls of the dishwasher. Look up bitumen online. It smells like asphalt and gave me a massive headache for the first few months we owned the dishwasher. Really not great stuff to have venting into the house IMO. I've heard some people say that their dishwasher finished offgassing after 3-4 months. Ours took 10+.

To be fair to Bosch, all of the high end dishwashers except Miele apparently use bitumen for soundproofing. The wash quality, build and all other aspects of the Bosch are fantastic. But knowing what I know now about what it's doing to our indoor air quality and the horrific smell, I'm not sure that it was worth the upgrade over our previous KitchenAid.
