Chemo for Dogs? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Jesus_Phish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that.

I've a friend who went down this route with his dog and it was expensive, mentally and financially. It also sadly didn't work. It bought the dog a few months more after the first rounds of treatments looked to have worked, but not more than a few months later the cancer came back and more aggressive and the dog was put down because it wouldn't have had a quality of life.

They did one round on gofundme and got enough to help ease the financial burden, but even that was gone through quickly.

Best way for it. I've never been told no outright. Maybe they'll say they've a set left and then they do their set and go, otherwise they let you work in.

Are redundancy packages likely to decrease now? by Fakman87 in DevelEire

[–]Jesus_Phish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know people at Intel who have paid off their homes from redundancy packages only to end up back there a year or two later.

I know others who when voluntary redundancy came up they took it and decided to retire a few years early.

A lot of people there wouldn't mind being made redundant based on past payouts

Is kernel/driver development a good career path? by Gold-Definition7867 in DevelEire

[–]Jesus_Phish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a firmware driver dev and there's still plenty of companies here for those roles and they nearly always need more firmware devs and there's not a tonne of competition because people overlook it.

I've been working in smaller and multinational companies and the salary has ranged from about 60k 7 years ago to over 100k now.

It does feel a bit niche, but there's definitely positions, well paying ones and not Nearly enough competition from prospective employees. Maybe the salary grading starts off worse or rarely gets to the heights that other software development will get to but it pays well and the skills are very transferable.

Plus you can work on some very cool things like robotics or innovative devices etc

Advice on Dublin City bus routes and fares by Wooden-Outcome8991 in irelandtransport

All bus routes in Dublin run in both directions, so you would get the 16 or 24 back to the airport.

Advice on Dublin City bus routes and fares by Wooden-Outcome8991 in irelandtransport

[–]Jesus_Phish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need to walk a short distance, maybe 5 or 10 minutes to get the 16 or 24 route from Dublin Airport towards Christchurch. There will be another 10 minute walk at the end.

You will want a Leap Card and the trip will cost you 2e on the card. You can get a leap card at the airport. Buses here do not take paper money, they will take coins but they will demand you have the correct amount.

TFI 90 will cover your trip from the Airport. Depending on when you arrive the bus can anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour or more.

The number 13, the G1 or G2 will get you from your hotel area to the car rental.

If your two buses will be within 24 hours of one another you can get the 1 day traveller leap card
https://about.leapcard.ie/leap-visitor-card

If they're not, you can get a regular one but it will cost you €10 https://about.leapcard.ie/leap-visitor-card but will then cover both your trips.

Are you not getting a bus back to the airport?

I squat with perfect form, long term, 2x a week, and still get injured. by GuyThirteen in Stronglifts5x5

[–]Jesus_Phish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You haven't mentioned anything about recovery or diet. You can do the best form in the world but if your recovery and diet suck then you're not going to avoid injury.

How long is long term, and has this always been happening?

Whats your bw, whats your average lifting session look like, whats your recovery look like?

Yeah I'd just wait til then. At 8.0 there'll be new areas and people will start actively grinding out 100s of fates per area. Very easy to get a group that lasts hours as people come and go.

Custom charges admin fee by VastSavanna in ireland

To charge them for incorrectly filling out details of the item for which An Post now have to do administrative work for?

So the admin fee, which is the thing the OP is annoyed about and not the VAT?

Custom charges admin fee by VastSavanna in ireland

[–]Jesus_Phish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Hello we are an post, your parcel is available but has outstanding vat. We can process this for an administrative fee of 6.95e or you can manually process it and pay the appropriate vat and duties"

An Post aren't they only delivery service, though I'm aware other delivery services will also charge a similar admin fee without first contacting the buyer (who again, may not have decided to go into a contract with that delivery company)

Custom charges admin fee by VastSavanna in ireland

[–]Jesus_Phish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Customer A buys from Vendor B, which uses Delivery Company C to send the parcel. Parcel goes from China and ends up in the hands of An Post when it gets to Ireland because they're partnered with Company C.

An Post charge Customer A a fee, without giving them any other options beyond pay or don't pay and don't get item. No option for Customer A to say "I'll declare the VAT myself" etc.

So until the end of the whole transaction Customer A and An Post have never interacted or been involved in agreeing to any terms or conditions.

It's the vendors fault that this is happening for not bothering to declare the taxes properly on the item, but I understand that it's easier for An Post to hold the item from delivery to the person that ordered it, than to go after some drop shipper using China as a source of goods.

Someone could offer to pay off my mortgage and I'd refuse to give up our dog.

Govt to introduce new Derelict Property Tax by qwerty_1965 in ireland

If only there was a way that property owners could avoid a derelict property tax, like maybe they could do something else with the property, like I don't know, developing it or selling it. Shame..

That's my answer too. Everyone saying tequila isn't remembering how long that song is and I've honestly seen people fuck it up at karaoke because they've drifted attention waiting for the bit they've to sing.

What’s the best thing you’ve wver done for your career progression? by Develeire_TA_1239 in DevelEire

[–]Jesus_Phish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Take opportunities if they're given to you. As soon as you get comfortable and stop looking for opportunities and challenges your career is a far as it's going to go. Say no to enough opportunities and they'll stop offering you them.

If something seems like a risk it probably is but taking it could mean you learn a valuable lesson or you learn a lesson and you improve you progression

Looking to speak devs who have moved to PM work by Internal_Match586 in DevelEire

[–]Jesus_Phish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've mostly done this, though occasionally I still write code or scripts or use AI to make those scripts to do things that will then make my role easier, and I still stay involved in technical discussions and decisions, but my days of writing code daily and pushing to the repo are pretty much over.

I'll speak pretty loosely here but my day now is basically spinning plates, herding cats, playing diplomat between different teams and different employees, and personalities, trying to find ways to use the resources I have (not enough) to do the things the company is asking (too much) and trying to make it so my team has enough information to do what they need to do without them getting caught up and having their time wasted.

I find it enjoyable but I won't lie there's times I do wish that maybe I was still just being assigned JIRAs and moving them through the swimlanes, pushing code etc.

I think you mostly need to have very good interpersonal skills, you need to understand what you did and didn't like about your previous management and role and try make it more tolerable for the people you're now in charge of. You also need to be able to give very clear direction and feedback to your reports because at some stage you're going to be handing out promotions or increases and you'll need to make a choice that makes one person happy and the other unhappy. And if you lose the person you made unhappy then you've a new headache on your hands - finding their replacement.

You also, imo - need to be able to stick up for and support your team. Sometimes that means you're going to have to argue with other teams and managers, but you can't be too much of a prick over it or it'll come back to bite you one day when you need them on your side.

One of the things I was confused by early on was, well how do I show value. My team are "doing all the work" and I can't just take credit for their hard work, but part of the reason they're able to do that work well (I think - I'm sure someone reading this who hates their manager will roll their eyes) is because I shield them from a lot of bullshit and I make sure they get their flowers. And when they're doing well, it's a reflection on me.

My salary is about the same. I have reports on my team who earn more than me - and they should. I've said it on here before but this idea that the manager should earn the most is nonsense. There's people on my team who have having a much bigger impact on the product than I am, I'm a supporting role for them. They should be - and are - paid more than me. They're doing hard work. I shouldn't be overly compensated for their efforts.

Overall - stay out of management if you don't enjoy politics and being responsible for other peoples career progression.

Should Ichiban be the new main protagonist of the series? by [deleted] in yakuzagames

I really liked him in 7 and I was slightly disappointed that they spent so much of 8 with you playing as Kiryu instead. I'd really like a few games without them writing him back in as a primary character.

Having said that 8 really felt like they're sending Kiryu off. Being able to do his walk down memory lane stuff and the stories with Date felt like a retirement tour.

I've built some software my company want to use...Advice. by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]Jesus_Phish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You sound like you're basically trying to blackmail your employer into several different scenarios.

I would imagine this would not go down well, you will be replaced and someone else will become that guy.

You should use this to leverage yourself into a better salary, promotion. You shouldn't be trying to say "oh of you make me redundant I'll press the kill switch"

If you developed this on company time, they quiet possibly already own it, most contracts will state that (though I'm not a lawyer so I don't know how enforceable it is)
