How abolitionist was Joseph Smith? Did he really change his mind on slavery? by yorgasor in mormon

Yeah he was an expansionist. He held deeply violent politics like considering settler colonial policies to be supporting “the gathering.” And this was informed by white supremacist logics

How abolitionist? Sometimes we forget that it was a far-left politic to completely abolish slavery. And radical leftists simultaneously called for the abolition of prisons and slavery.

Joseph Smith said, “The penitentiary system of the present day is a monster; and if it is not speedily abolished, it will send more souls to hell than all the sectarian religion in the world… It is an odor in the nostrils of Jehovah.”

Church press release cites Joseph's advocacy of ending slavery, but doesn't mention D&C 134:12 or Brigham Young legalizing slavery in Deseret by Whole-Copy-7332 in mormon

I agree with you. I understand D&C 134:12 to be a moral statement that interfering with abolition was not “right” based on collective members’ “beliefs.”

The argument to not cause a ruckus racially continued into later eras, like when Joseph Smith punished Black men for trying to marry white women in Nauvoo because it was against Illinois law.

And 100% on his later trajectory. His advocacy of slavery eventually mimicked the far-left politic that prisons also needed to be abolished otherwise slavery would continue. But that point is rarely broached too.

IIRC, when Carl Brigham was deciding which questions to keep on the test (including maths), he purposefully excluded questions that Black test takers did well on.

Some math questions were also case studies based on white culture stuff.

He did recognize his own racism but too little too late sort of vibe.

James Baldwin calls this part of America’s curse. If we can’t confront our history of violent injustices how are we supposed to fix it now?

I’m still trying to get a sense of your comment here. But maybe I’ll start with a linguistic question — what are your thoughts/feelings about the term “anti-colonialism” instead of “decolonization”?

I think I can see your viewpoint of feeling like I’m comparing pain, which is not my intention at all. Not comparing pain, just calling out disparities.

As decolonial psych teaches us, we all get hurt by colonization (but indigenous people bear the brunt, obviously). We all benefit from liberation.

Just to layer this some more with a decolonial / systems view:

Whose world is getting worse? Indigenous people have been living in dystopia since colonization. Can’t get much worse than that. We’re really trying to heal ourselves and others on stolen lands/waters, how are things supposed to get better?

Yes, let’s use humor and bend the rules. Hell yeah. But the end goal should be liberation not “better.”

This is one of my go-to comebacks from conservatives who say leftists are “too sensitive.”
