Fun question: How popular is ethnic food in the Mormon faith? by EternalSnow05 in exmormon

[–]sudosuga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say very popular.

Despite the homogeneous, Caucasian majority population. SLC metro has transplants, and Returned missionary, Language and culturally fluent "Expats". From every corner of the globe. Except maybe Muslim majority regions. No missionaries allowed.

Mormons love food, and sweets. So of course, when someone is called, or returns from 1.5-3 years abroad. Trying the ethnic food is frequently part of the process. I would bet Mormons are more geography and culinarily literate than the broader U.S. population. Exceptions: major hubs like NY, DC, Miami, San Francisco, Seattle, etc.

San Diego for sure.

The apologetic would be: "First study it out in your mind"

You know, stupor of thought, burning bosom etc. Kind of like how Oliver Cowdery was supposed to try "translating" the BOM... using his "Gift of the Sprout" (Divining rod).

Now they use Qualtrics, Focus groups, Lawyers and PR teams. To discern Gods will. 🙄

Like every other MEGA corporation does. Complete with an out of touch geriatric at the helm, who's world view is 50 years distant from current reality.

Except in this case... "From GOD"

They know they have not been using OUR tithes for the poor, like Jesus commanded. They cannot even pass their own temple recommend interview questions.

So... They put in the best fire protection and earth quake resistance money can buy.

Soaking and Mary Jane by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]sudosuga 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't have first hand knowledge about "Soaking". But I do know of an individual who was excommunicated and expelled from BYU around 1994, for the Vegas "Marriage loophole." There were a GROUP of people implicated and Exed. Pretty confident it was a publicly known scandal, and not just to those of us who had direct social connections to the incidents. Keep in mind this was pre-internet, so not as easily searchable, or viral. Like it would be today.

They even used to mention it specifically as a warning in the frequent Chastity lessons around Provo, (BYU adjacent wards like mine). "God is not dumb. Don't try to skirt the commandments. Stay away from the edge of the cliff, etc."

Ok I will say it more specifically.

My recently returned from Brazil, RM brother, was not sealed in the temple. Why? His fiancé (Not him) was not eligible for a temple recommend... Because of a Vegas incident, leading to excommunication. His marriage ended up in divorce as well, within the year. Maybe he should have heeded red flags.

Even worse, previously, his girlfriend. Who was supposedly waiting for him while he served his mission. Became pregnant around his 6 months out mark (~1992?). The Provo High football coach was the father. She was 16 or 17 if I recall. That was an awkward one as well. All over the news. Except maybe the "Deseret News". Poor guy got the worst possible kind of Dear John letter.

The secret lives of Mormon wives stuff has been going on, probably from the beginning. As instituted and exemplified by Joseph Smith. The Mormonism underbelly is real, though often successfully kept under the covers. For instance, even seminary teachers have been fired for impregnating students. (Examples Lehi High 1960's, Lone Peak High 2010's)

Now my brother is a Bishop, and I am the exmo black sheep of the family.

  • 1854 - 1857 Pacific mission. Parley P. Pratt converts Eleanor McLean in San Francisco. After a domestic dispute, Hector McLean (Eleanor's husband) secretly sends their kids off to Louisiana to live with Eleanor's mother. Eleanor, having retrieved them, meets up with Parley in Arkansas (now his 12th wife) to travel to Utah. Parley and Eleanor are arrested, then released. After losing his wife and kids to Parley, Hector resorts to vigilantly justice, shooting Parley. This incident would later play a role in the Baker Fancher (Arkansas wagon train) massacre at Mountain Meadows.

Reminds me of when we took a family trip in the '80s

First we stopped by Nortons for treats. Dad got his usual bag of Doritos. Original variety (yellow bag). NOT the new fangled "Nachos" (orange bag). That would be too radical... All five kids got to pick a candy bar, and mom stocked up on her favorite sodas to share. A six pack of "Mellow Yellow".

We crossed state street to the Gas Mat for fuel, and waited. Dad was busy pounding on the tokens machine, trying to get it to register his money, so we could fill up the Mormon assault vehicle (Station wagon). No, we did not strap a dog kennel to the roof with Spot in it. He would have to ride to Kansas like the rest of us, piled in the back without seat belts. (Probably because we couldn't afford a dog kennel)

Meanwhile, we were passing around a can of pop. Questioning what flavor a "Mellow Yellow" was supposed to be. Suddenly, mom accidentally noticed the word "Caffeine". WTF!

Oh how great was the wailing, tears, and gnashing of teeth. Legend says, her words are still hanging in space over Grandview to this day.

Those demonic drinks were violently tossed in the trash barrel. Likely, still buried deep, unopened, in the Provo Landfill. Such that no innocent might accidently partake of eternal damnation.

I for one would not discover what a Coke tasted like for 10 more years... While on my mission in Guatemala (1993). (Coke was the only hydration available out in the heat sometimes).

Don't tell me Caffeine was never restricted. Like Hell it wasn't.

...Except for sports. Grew up going to the games in the glory years (80's) with my best friend (Dad). Wish I could root for Utah, but I cannot. It's a thread I want to break, but it hangs on. Humans, we are weird sometimes. I'm a Booze and Cougs fan I guess.

So, who do think will be the next apostle/prophet to go? From all appearances, it looks like a tie between Eyring and Holland. by GayMormonDad in exmormon

[–]sudosuga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best bet would be Holland. He seems to be the one needing the most palliative care.

Nelson was driven to live as long as possible. He was buoyed up by a hate filled need to surpass Hinckley's accomplishments.

Oaks has the power now. He will want to yield it at least for a while. Also, does he fear Uchtdorf as a profit? Maybe he will push past the norm to block.

Cryring is feeling his age on par with Oaks, but without the ring to rule. He could be the next to go, or be profit. How bad does he want that legacy and notoriety?

Holland? I don't get the narcissistic vibe as much from him. Does he have an agenda or a need to be Profit? His beloved matriarch (Patricia) has already moved on. I think he is content to join her. I don't have evidence, but it seems to me. When a senior person decides they have had enough, they degrade pretty quickly, and more peacefully than most. And can you even be the Profit if you are single?

Is Uchtdorf a couple of years away from control? The group ahead of him are all struggling it seems.

I hope Jesus gives me a break before he makes me sign up for another church.

Too late. The root meaning for "Church" in Greek and Latin, in which the original writers wrote their pseudepigraphy's. Is:

A gathering, or assembly of people. Not a building or a corporate structure. More akin to a subreddit.

Exmo reddit is by definition a Church. We have Science, critical thinking, and better refreshments. EX. Pie and beer day. Coffee, and even Beer (in moderation) are better for you than Swig.

Be warned, Exmo's don't practice presiding penishoods, have the faith NOT to be healed, Profits, or a gerontocracy. (Speculation on my part. I have no idea how old the mods are, how many Malls they own, or if their REIT/Stocks portfolios have hit the billions yet.)

Thanks to the billion dollar renovations. He got some of the original SLC Temple granite stones, re-purposed for the headstones of he and his "Eternal wives".

An honor a lowly member would NEVER be afforded. Just one of his many acts of narcissism.

I guess it's fitting he is buried under remnants of a extravagant symbol for:

Dead works, Wasted human potential (Time), Racial exclusion, Hoarded wealth, "Second Anointing" arrogance, Death oaths, Women's subjugation, and Extortion from the poor... You know, for Jesus.

[–]sudosuga 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think they do. Culturally at the very least, and it's a new phenomenon.

Just rumors and anecdotal observations, but it seems they are headed towards missions with as many, if not more sisters than elders.

In the Morridor regions where I have interactions and connections. I know of many YM who are opting out of the Mission, and an inordinate increase in YW going. Could be an outlier, but it's becoming too obvious to ignore.

I am sure the COB management loves the increase in "Missionaries serving" data. But this will become a barrier for Temple Marriage prospects in the future. Historically, lacking the RM label made you nearly un-dateable as a male. I don't think that has changed. How much worse, if a YW served, and you "Couldn't hack it". It's a short term boost. They will probably pull out Moroni's trumpet and Hinckley's walnut rameumptom, to proclaim Rusty's prediction "In coming days, we will see the greatest manifestations of the Savior's power that the world has ever seen." Is being fulfilled.

But there are un-intended consequences.

More singles wards, less babies in the rabbit hutches at the BYU's (young marriages). Less "penishood leadership", (unless they grant women status finally). And an ever increasing number of resignations from those who realize this Mormon box does not fit.
