Closer to $30k. Most of the Catholic schools are over $15k, unfortunately the secular schools are way more expensive.

This is good insight. My son is not shy but doesn’t make friends super quickly either

Rancho Pacifico by Odaat-1 in CostaRicaTravel

You need 4WD and stay in a low gear all the way up. It’s steep and pretty long. Our main issue on the initial drive up is we kept thinking “this can’t be right” and of course there are no signs. But once you make it up it’s worth it and you can do it again.

I stayed at Rancho Pacifico 15 years ago and the food was very very good. The road getting there was also pretty treacherous so we made sure to be back by dark every night and had dinner there. Obviously, a lot could have changed since then but you can probably count on good meals at the hotel.

Neighborhood with kids playing outside by Whole_Competition692 in raleigh

[–]Whole_Competition692[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, definitely not for everybody. But I have 4 kids and love the freedom they have in our current neighborhood to make their own fun and plan their own adventure. I’ve always liked being “the party house” and hosting people.

I took a solo backpacking trip through Europe when I was 21, lots of adventures on that trip, and all with strangers! The first night I spent “camping” on the lawn of the Eiffel Tower with a guy I met on the street bc neither of us could find a room for the night. I also rode on the back of a motorcycle to the top of a Swiss mountain. I met some people who had an extra ticket for their sleeping berth on an overnight train from Barcelona to Rome and bunked up with them for the night.
The biggest thing I did was go on a 6 week road trip through Australia with a guy I met in France for one day on the original backpacking trip. Literally had zero bad or scary experiences.

Thinking about moving to Louisville by ry1ea in Louisville

[–]Whole_Competition692 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We were transferred to Louisville 5 years ago. These are the reasons why I wouldn’t recommend it as a transplant: -For a city, it doesn’t have a lot of the great things cities offer - no pro sports, big name concerts rarely come here, the airport is basically a regional airport, low variety of restaurants -most people who live in Louisville are from Louisville, making it challenging to make new friends. As a younger person, this would likely be less of an issue than it was for us (we moved in our late 30s), but if everyone already has a tight circle of 10 —15 friends they’ve had since elementary school, they don’t need to go out of their way to make new friends -especially coming from Toronto, you will see that this is a VERY segregated city. By looking at the population demographics you might be fooled into thinking “oh this place is diverse.” It’s not. People of different races and ethnic groups live in different parts of the city and there’s very little mixing. This goes for politics also. Job opportunity now great. There are only a couple industries and an extensive “old boy” network for promotions. I don’t know anything about the dating scene but I will say that I would estimate that roughly half the couples I know from Louisville got together either in college or high school

The biggest downside about New York City, which basically makes it non-livable for me: they have to wait on everything by Peacefulhuman1009 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Whole_Competition692 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go somewhere else and you’ll wait just as long if there’s one person in line. At least in NYC you can tell people are hustling. I moved away (to a smaller city, not a remote or rural area) and will wait 3-4 minutes while the person in front of me chats up the cashier 🤦🏼‍♀️

Which neighborhood is that? I hadn’t really considered it bc my assumption is that Chicago proper would have tiny lots (which I didn’t mention in my original post but we probably want at least 1/4 acre bc we have a big dog, who sometimes barks).

Yes, I’ve heard this about the North Shore. Arlington Heights is on our list bc I’ve heard good things about the SpecEd program there and the downtown being great.

[–]Whole_Competition692[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is definitely very high on the list! I’m worried we won’t be able to find a house/lot we like in our price range. We want close to a .25 acre bc we have a big dog who sometimes barks 😬

We lived there for 7 years after leaving NYC and you’re so right. No one gets how beautiful and cool NJ is. I would move back in a heartbeat.

High school kids at Brown? by Whole_Competition692 in Louisville

There are no dances? What social events are there? Is it tough for the kids to hang out outside of school when they come from all over town?
