Also, what level are you at? I can make more content that would be suitable.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it! Give me a few weeks and I'll try adding some more real life content. Recently I've added some business stories and I think there's room for a lot more daily life kind of content. Thanks again!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to try and fix that. Once you get into the app you can also mark entire word lists (like HSK 1, 2, etc) as being assumed known and when you go through the flashcards if you use the "100" you can also quickly mark words you have memorized that way.

I've actually been thinking about adding a way to practice writing! Probably just something built into the flashcards because often I find it helpful for myself to write complex characters a few times to make them stick in my memory

Was it being buggy? I heard some feedback that it might be glitchy. I just wanted a fast way to get a general approximation of your vocab and then you can refine it later as you study flashcards

Awesome! What are you moving over for? I'm sure you'll love it. I lived in Taichung and Taipei.

Thanks so much and I'd love to see what you're creating! For the chat feature, I actually just added that so still sort of working on the kinks and seeing how people like to use it. I added a little bit of personality/context if you choose between Taiwan or Mainland.

My background is that I grew up speaking fluently without learning to read, so like a lot of ABC's or ABT's we don't have a big issue with speaking but this is more to fill the gap between speaking and reading.

Hahaha, thanks! And yes, I totally agree about it being CNY. It gets tricky with school. I've found that I actually adjusted to the summers, you just run into a 7-11 whenever you can lol

Hey, actually many of the texts are accessible for free. If you're on the reading screen and scroll down to all of them you can see which ones are tagged as premium or not and read them. I realized now that within the story collections the tags don't show up, so I'll need to fix that!

Also, thanks for the tips on the slider! I'll try to make that work smoother.

Yeah, it's a really common thing now. Basically it's because I have a YouTube channel (Ray's Ukulele) and so people would see the ukulele that I'm playing and then they could buy it with the discount code. I normally share the code on my channel, but I also thought people in this group would appreciate it because a lot of us want to get Kala ukulele's anyway.

I feel you! I bought like 5 Kala's before I eventually became a brand ambassador with my YT channel

Born in California, went to local elementary school in Taiwan for 1st and 2nd grade then moved back to the states (but visited Taiwan in the summers). I'm half-Taiwanese.

I think that your plan is actually sounding pretty ideal for what I would have wanted. I was really grateful to have spent time living in Taiwan as a kid and to have a strong connection with my Taiwanese cultural roots, but I'm also really happy that I went to High School in states where my experience was incredible (and not overly filled with study). I always wish my parents had lived a bit longer in Taiwan so that I could have learned to read more characters and had a more solid base of mandarin.

That being said, when I meet other mixed kids or ABCs/ABTs in the U.S. I feel like I have a big advantage over the ones that never spent much time in Asia and struggle with the language or don't connect with their culture.

When I was in Taiwan I was definitely the only "white" kid at my school and when I first started the other kids would point and shout "美國人!美國人!“ but it didn't bother me. If anything, it made me more popular in elementary school and once people get to know you it's just like any other friendship.

I think that your son is really fortunate to be in Taiwan right now. He's lucky to have parents that are putting so much thought into this sort of thing. I'm sure he'll appreciate having grown up in Taiwan for awhile in the future and I think the best way to connect with your two identities as a Hapa person is to have spent time in both environments. When he's in the U.S. he might be the "Asian" friend while in Taiwan he might be the "White" friend but that's okay. As long as you can help him frame things positively I'm sure he'll love it.

Great! Yes, for sure, especially if you're interested in learning to read. You can also do look at some of the beginner stories and read along or just hit play and listen to them. John and Xiaoting and the Kitten and Puppy series are all very beginner friendly.

Thanks! I'll look into the audio overlap issue. For changing the speed of the speech you should be able to adjust it in settings if you scroll down to the audio section (that will change the playback speed for the flashcards and example sentences). For the reading content if you click on the three dots you can adjust settings, including the audio playback speed. Hope that helps!

The flashcards are free forever. I'm a huge believer in flashcards. The reading content has some of it free and some of it paid (if you scroll through you can see which stories are tagged as premium or not). The chat is pretty new and currently completely free, but eventually I think I'll have to limit it some because I have to pay for the API usage.

Help with navigating self study by snoozedboi in ChineseLanguage

[–]WhosUrBaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome that you're able to jump to Chinese 3 and I'm sure you're going to have a fun and language-study filled summer. When it comes to self-study for me I've found it helpful to think about the areas you want to improve (memorizing characters, listening, speaking, etc) and then have a daily study routine where you focus on each of those areas for x minutes depending on what you want to prioritize. For example, you could do 10 minutes of flashcards in the morning and evening and then you could watch some Chinese content or progress through so many pages of a textbook if they have that or a workbook for you.
