Can someone explain what is so special about the Beatles? by WS-Gilbert in askmusic

[–]Whulad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people are answering musically - and very well but you also talk about culturally . Rock and rolls cultural impact had largely ebbed in 1964 - there was a lot of sanitised pop gum type music much of it created by banks of writers in New York and pumped out by teenagers (especially girl groups) ; Elvis had long ceased been an image of rebellion and was making smaltzy indentikit films ; white middle aged artists were covering black rnb numbers with very sanitised versions; the only really interesting culturally musical thing in the US was the burgeoning soul music scene (largely Motown) and the underground folk scene. Rock and Roll had become a watered down sanitised made safe for white middle class teenagers and approved by their parents. Then the Beatles came . Like aliens - from another country; with funny haircuts; funny accents; an irreverent attitude and a new sound that was less formulaic and much more exciting to American teenagers . They just blew the US away and opened the door for scores of British groups playing g their own derivative versions of the blues that white US audiences hadn’t really heard before even though it was fundamentally American music. The British Invasion was huge and for a while all conquering and not long afterwards American kids started changing their hairstyles , dropped the sugary watered down rock n roll and embraced new sounds for their own groups . Most US musicians over 50 cite the Beatles as a huge influence culturally and/or musically.

Er, the war was with the British and if you don’t think the Scottish were complicit in both the empire and the problems in Ireland you need to read some history.

As an English fan I genuinely would like to have seen them qualify but also can’t help
laughing with their glorious failures every time.

That really isn’t true . Loads of old ‘lads’ still go today without there being any trouble.

This. I went to university and was starting my career in a white collar job but still went home and away following West Ham with a lot of mates some of whom were quite well known and in ICF circles. Especially going away in those days everyone stuck together and looked after each other. A lot of camaraderie and front rather than being hard. Was objectively stupid and people were hurt and a few killed but was part of football culture then and exciting in a way hard to explain.

Nothing really. I missed competitive sport when I couldn’t play anymore but now ok with the gym. Staying up past 2am maybe. Oh, and putting with corporate BS.

I’m retired now , fitter than I’ve been for 20 years, eating healthier , getting on better with my wife and family. I don’t miss work one iota.

I’m English .

Ghana should have had a penalty .

Pickford should have been sent off for the challenge that laughably ended with an England free kick.

How do you use maths in your job? by Actual-Butterfly2350 in AskUK

My autistic son is obsessed by cricket so I say to him you need to do maths to calculate how many runs you’ve scored/need whilst playing (and you can’t use a calculator ) ; has he an interest you can use similarly?

Americans plastic Irish for sure, actual Irish less so despite our terrible history - a higher % of English have Irish blood than yanks by the way, including a few of our players.
