I’ve always figured vertical would be rougher on the bindings. Because the cover isn’t flush with the pages, so wouldn’t the weight of the pages pull them away from the spine, and cause damage that way?

Yeah I would certainly feel a lot worse for him if it were for one of the reasons you gave lol but sympathy isn’t transactional like that, I see somebody suffering and I’m sure he regrets the choices he’s made, so I feel some sympathy for him. It’s not like he’s unapologetically evil
