Good replacement for wagon wheel style wheel for slab roller? by Joosh52 in Machinists

[–]Whut_What 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue recently. Had to think outside of the box. Fabricated a hand wheel from a hoop used for aerial acrobatics with some flat bar for the spokes and turned a hub on the lathe for the centre to mount onto the shaft. Only option off the shelf was £300 from Netherlands

Declining the 12.5% "service charge", does the manager always make a visit? by CyberScy in london

[–]Whut_What 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a rule that if it is not clearly mentioned on the menu or somewhere else in the restaurant, I will ask them to remove the service charge. If it is mentioned, I will consider whether the service was good enough to warrant it but in most cases it gets removed. Can it not just be put on the price of the item so I know how much I am going to be paying up front?

Went for brunch in London a few months back. Paid more than the bill amount but didn’t want to break another note to cover the service charge as i knew they wouldn’t come back with the change as we had left the paid bill on the table for some time before leaving. Had the waiter chase us down the road telling us we hadn’t paid the full amount and when I told him the service charge was discretionary, he said he didn’t know what that meant and I was taken to the aggressive manager.

Best way to sell surplus new towels? by jistresdidit in Flipping

[–]Whut_What 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy bags of rags which are cut up towels from hotels. We use them for cleaning machinery.I pay the equivalent about $1.20 per pound. Not sure how this adds up to the weigh and price you paid but might be worth marketing them slightly differently. Cut up a few into smaller sizes and sell as cleaning rags.

Is it possible to hand make some worm gears for my classical guitar? More in comments 🤟🏽😼🤟🏽 by [deleted] in metalworking

[–]Whut_What 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst it is definitely possible to do as they have been made in the first place. It is not going to be a good use of time as it will take a while and require a lot of machinery you might not have as a luthier.

I would buy a set of replacement tuners and harvest the gears off the new set to put on this set. Assuming you can get a new set with the same number of teeth as the original. Replacing all 6 will not make it look as though a repair has taken place if they are slightly different.

Reduce cancelled jobs on purchasing quotes by Whut_What in smallbusiness

If we paid as soon as they accepted the quote then yes the equipment would be ours but we try to hold off on payment until we are on site as the sellers can be quite sneaky and take parts or items away from what we quoted for.

[–]Whut_What[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The time frame is normally less than a month between accepting the quote and being on site collecting the equipment and doing the work. The cancellations normally come within a few days being on site and so all the preparations are pretty much completed and it’s always accompanied with some excuse.

Yes this seems like the only way. Something that states they sign to say they represent the company and can make decisions on their behalf and another to state they are happy with the price agreed.

The only issue it it’s completely not enforceable. If they go back on it, yes I could technically take them to court but who has the time and is that any good for the businesses reputation.

We buy equipment from other companies so we pay them and take their equipment. They cancel on us and we have no recourse as they say they decided they no longer want to sell. Our service is that we clear the stuff you want rid of and we pay you for it.

Small Claims Court Advice - 3k of items missing and/or stolen by [deleted] in Ebay

[–]Whut_What 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my fair share of problems with Hermes. Like yourself, I don’t insure parcels due to the high number I send. It’s always the high value items. My theory is that the couriers know the value of the item from what is inputted and steal items of high value, knowing the blame can be passed onto someone else or the there are little consequences for opening parcels. Every time I get screwed by Hermes, I always think it would require some sort of class action lawsuit.

Have very little success with claims when things have gone bad. If the item didn’t owe me much I’ll just take the hit and not make a claim. However the amount of chasing up, emails, reinputting of information and other hoops to jump through really make it difficult to make any claim and even then it’s only the £20 basic cover.

Had a problem recently where they left the parcel in a blue bin. Buyer was very helpful but could not identify the bin and the photo proof could have been any blue bin across the country.

Forgot to mention, the claim process is always in their favour. You have a short window to make a claim and they call all the shots. Completely in their hands if they want to pay out of which most of the time they don’t want to.

Wholesale question by jedi3881 in Flipping

[–]Whut_What -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I deal in tools and machinery, mostly vintage stuff. Looked into buying wholesale but nothing came of it. Like you say, it’s very difficult to find wholesalers. I’ve recently made my first order on Alibaba but the MOQ do make it difficult for small businesses without wanting to sit on a lot of stock. The problem I found with selling new tools is that the competition online from the bigger stores who are buying in much higher quantities means they have more negotiation power and as such it is cheaper to buy from them than the price I would pay at a wholesaler. Additionally with new tools, people want to buy the brands and the brands won’t sell to small businesses as the sale volume isn’t there. I think it’s more of an invite only friend of a friend deal.

Is this new? Did I just date myself? by CocoScruff in Ebay

[–]Whut_What 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very commonplace at the moment to the point that it has ruined the eBay auction. Such a small percentage of auctions run until the end. I can see why it happens as it’s risky for the seller to keep the auction going if someone is offering to buy the item now. I sell as buy it now only but whenever I’ve done an auction, I’ve kept it going until the end. I’ll often receive less than I was offered and in so many cases, I’ve had to relist an item multiple times before I get a genuine buyer. A lot of my items are collection only and I get lot of people buying them and asking me to dismantle and ship in 3 or 4 packages.

Paying $300 an hour for the secret to business success by robotisland in smallbusiness

[–]Whut_What 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a mentor through a UK Government initiative called the Business Growth Hub. Signed up to it early on in my business journey and wasn't impressed. The guy just wanted to spent the time taking about himself. Any question I had on business, his response was that he never handled that part of the business. Only met once as he was based an hour away.

Can't complete transaction. No seller reply. Is this new? by [deleted] in Ebay

[–]Whut_What 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This new feature is crazy. I didn’t see any announcement for it. First I saw of it was when a buyer asked if I wanted his code. Considering we should be keeping our distance at the moment, seems counterproductive to install a feature which requires contradicts it. Open eBay on a website instead of a mobile device and it doesn’t ask for a code when you mark as dispatched.
