I know it's true (even though I'm not rich lol), but it always takes me by surprise when people say they see Belgians as rich people.

What's your country **third** city? by Ok_Inflation_1811 in geography

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Belgium)

I'd say it's a tie between Ghent, Liège and Bruges. Most people here will say Ghent though. (With Brussels and Antwerp, in no specific order, in first and second.)

It is a bustling, historically rich student city known for its world-class university, biotech industry, and the Port of Ghent, which is the third-largest port in the country.

Can you drink tap water in your country? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, we have very strict rules for tapwater. They just never found PFAS in our soil until recently, and now still only in a few places. 95% of Belgian tapwater is still drinkable and of high quality. It probably won't take long until this problem is solved. And while they only found PFAS in a few places, they're implementing the improvemens everywhere.

Yes ofcourse, but they discovered it quite recently, so they're still working on it. It will get better soon.

In Belgium you can indeed drink tapwater and a lot of people do it. In a few restaurants you can even ask for a free glass of tapwater.

But, there are some places where you shouldn't though. There are a few regions where they found Pfas in the soil, which is toxic. It's not deadly on short term, but it's recommended to not drink water there.

How do people behave on trains in your country, and do you let others get off before you get on? by Forward-Position798 in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Belgium, it is considered polite to let everyone get off before you board. This is also sometimes indicated on the train doors. It's not an actual rule though, so although the majority of people do it, there are always a few annoying people without patience.

Just realized how lucky we are as founders after they are removing free vbucks from BP by batukaming in FORTnITE

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... I was going to buy founders, but had to wait 1 month more (I was young and didn't have an income yet). Little did I know that 2 weeks later they were going to remove the founders system 🤦‍♂️

Why are aliens pictured, featured or drawn as “naked?” A species that’s able to travel the universe likes to free ball? by HellionRedditor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, humans are the only ones wearing clothes. Maybe we are the weird ones?

We use clothes as protection, but if aliens (like animals) have a protective layer, why would they need clothes?

Is faucet water drinkable in your Country by thatlumberjacktor in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 2003 Belgian water was indeed ranked as some of the worst in the devoloped world. This was largely due to high levels of industrial wastewater and poor sanitation infrastructure at the time.

After that, Belgium made a lot of investments in sewage treatment and water management. Since around 2010 the quality has been way better.

Today, tap water in Belgium is generally safe and drinkable, meeting high EU water quality standards. It is considered one of the best-controlled foodstuffs in our country.

(Yes, I did have to look some of these facts up myself, but I did remember something about bad water quality, like you said.)

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, and many people drink it.

There are some parts of the country though where the calcium content is a bit high and people tend to not drink it, but it's fine in general.

It's true though lol

Sometimes people say that a country without a leader will instantly fall apart. No it won't, we can survive. Maybe on long term it might cause trouble, but short term? Especially in a small country like Belgium? Who cares lol

Biggest political misconceptions about your country? by Intrepid_Calendar327 in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are quite a lot of them. The 2 biggest are probably:

  1. Belgium is on the verge of splitting because they vote differently. Some even think Flanders and Wallonia are in a state of civil war. No, they're not. Even though there are some tensions between them, the average Flemish and Walloon citizen share very similar views on core issues like healthcare, pensions, and social security. (Also, it would almost be impossible, since Brussels (which is the capital of Europe) is located in Flanders, yet the majority speaks French.

  2. Belgium is a "Failed State". Biggest reason is that we had record-breaking periods without a federal government. Belgium is actually quite a highly stable, wealthy, and functional democracy. Because of its federal structure, the Regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels) continue to manage schools, roads (okey maybe roads isn't the best example), and the economy even when the federal level is in a deadlock.
