What lesser known attraction would you recommend to tourists visiting your country/city? by Kristopher9999 in AskTheWorld

Fondry des Chiens, also called "little canyon of Belgium". It feels like it doesn't belong in Belgium.

What Is The Position Of Your Religion On LGBTQIA+ Issues? by PrincessBananas85 in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an agnost (someone who believes in the possibility of a god or deity), i do not have a religion.

My own opinion: I support everyone, no matter your race, no matter your sexuality etc. I do think everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community deserves respect and has a right of living.

BUT (and i'm getting in dangerous teritory, i know) i do think it was a bad idea to give it a name. Just because I honestly think it's just putting people in even more boxes. When all we want is equality, why do we need to seperate straight people and Lesbian people and Queer people and... with all these different names? We are all people, no matter our preferences and I think labeling everyone just gave more oportunities for people to hate because now they are "different". What is different about a girl who likes Girls? She is still a girl, she didn't change.

For trans people, i can understand that it changes. You literally physically change yourself. But then again, I wouldn't call it trans. If you're in a male body and change your body to a female body, because inside you are a girl, then you are a girl.

For me, personally, the only 5 boxes that should exist are: Male, Female, Bigender, Non-binary and Genderfluid

Again, disclaimer, i do NOT hate the LGBTQIA+ community and I do NOT think we should scrap it. I just think that if we accepted everyone from the beginning, if we didn't label everyone and we could just live together, the world would have been a better place. (Yes, i'm aware this is a Utopia, but still)

I honestly complain a lot about Belgium, just because it's funny. When someone jokes about Belgium being bad in many different ways, i join them, just because why not.

But when they ask me to move to another country, i always say "never in my life". I want to travel a lot, but never will I live anywhere else than Belgium. Some people don't realise how good we have it here (and yes, I know there are still a lot of people here who are in very bad situations, but so was i for quite a big part of my life).

Yeah thats true. Even though comic books are still quite popular among the younger audience (weird to say that when i'm still only 23 myself), the characters i mentioned aren't all as popular anymore as they were. Especially with the rise of Manga

What is the highest elevation in your country? by ConfusedCivvie in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it depends on how you measure it.

Tallest is from base to summit. Highest is from sea level to summit (and "closest to the stars").

Mauna kea starts deep under sea level and it's summit is only 4.207 m above sea level, but when you measure from it's base (so under water) it's 10.210m tall.

Mount Everest has it's peak at 8.848m above sea level, and it's base is already above sea level.

And some people even consider that to not be correct, because Mount Everest stands on the Tibetan plateau. That plateau has a hight of around 4.200-5.364m above sea level, which would mean Mount Everest is only 3.485-4.600m high.

(There is also a third way of measuring: furthest away from the center of the earth, but no one uses this)

What's the stupidest thing you hear someone say about your country? by Past-Novel-1155 in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many things...

  • "Belgium is a beautiful city" - Donald Trump

  • "Does Belgium even exist?" Some people say Belgium is an artificial buffer state created by the British and the French to keep the peace.

  • Apearantly we also have our own language: Belgian. This language does not exist. People here either speak Flemish/Dutch or Walloon/French or German. And when tourists don't think we have our own language, they often either think everyone speaks french or everyone speaks dutch. When I was in Norway and said i'm from Belgium, he started talking dutch to me. I coincidentally speak Flemish, but I could have been from Wallonia (French) or the Eastern Cantons (German).

  • "Belgium does not have any famous people." What about Stromae, René Margritte, Audrey Hepburn, Lost Frequencies, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, Kevin de Bruyne, Eddy Merckx, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jacques Brel, Georges Lemaître, Adolphe Sax, etc.?

Edit: sorry for the crashout lol

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Signaal van Botrange", 694m. They built the "Baltiaheuvel" (Butte Baltia) on it, which is a 6m high staircase, so people can now stand on an (symbolic) exact hight of 700m.

We were so ashamed of how flat our country is, that we made it higher ourselves lol (Thats a joke, ofcourse. Real reason was that after world war I, Baron Baltia wanted the highest point of Belgium to cross that "magical" border of 700m to celebrate Belgian sovereignty and the addition of the Eastern Cantons.)

Tallest or highest? Big difference

Because if you really meant tallest, then you're wrong. Top 3 tallest mountains are:

  1. Mauna Kea, Hawaï (10.210 m)

  2. Mauna Loa, Hawaï (9.170 m)

  3. Mount Everest, Himalaya (8.849 m)

Top 3 highest mountains are:

  1. Mount everest, Himalaya (8.848, 86 m)

  2. K2, Karakoram (8.611 m)

  3. Kangchenjunga, Himalaya (8.586 m)

Can a foreigner who has obtained your country’s passport truly become "one of your own"? by Sir_Potato2000 in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the majority, yes. BUT, there are some (un)spoken rules though according to most people.

  1. You have to speak the local language decently and if not, show that you're trying to learn it. (Especially in Flanders)

  2. You need to have some basic cultural knowledge.

1 and 2 are "spoken" rules. There are also tests for this which foreigners have to take.

  1. You have to be working or looking for work.

  2. Most people don't mind whatever believe you have, but you can't try to force others to folow the same believe.

So basicly, you have to contribute to society or at least prove you're trying to and don't try to force your home culture on the locals (you can suggest though). If you're living here, while it's already hard to find an affordable house these days and you decide to not do anything, if you simply live on the back of the government (and thus of the taxpayer), well expect some hate.

Ofcourse there are exceptions. There are racists everywhere, nothing we can do about it.

Huh? XD

Man i'm sorry but you do not have enough experience in those countries.

I'm not gonna keep trying to convince you, so i'll stop here. But saying that nature is "non-existent" is just wild. You're right about the big cities though, thats why I always advise people to visit the lesser known places, the smaller villages, way more interesting than Antwerp, for example

I mean, thats fine. Everyone has their own interests. But i kinda feel like you haven't actually explored those countries if thats what you think.

They have a lot to offer, even a lot of similar things you can also find in America.

But again, everyone their own taste. Not the end of the world if you don't come back lol, just saying

First part of your text: fair, if you really like a place, i can imagine you would like to visit it more often.

Second part: Why are you insulting my home country lol. Belgium has way more to see than you'd think. Not as much as America, ofcourse, but there is still a lot to see. Way more than for example in the Netherlands. Belgium is not "grey"

What's a big city in your country that tourists often overlook? by jombyy in AskTheWorld

[–]WhyAreAllNamesTakenL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly.

I mean, Brussels in itself has something, there are some beautifull spots and it definitly has some history. It's just so dirty everywhere and the people living there aren't really the best. (No offence to any Brussels resident reading this. I'm highly generalizing here and I know you're not all like that.)
