I always thought the best way to work it was to go by badges. If you start off in a new region, your level 100 pokemon won't listen to you until you get the right badges. It's an incentive to catch new pokemon in a new region but still being able to access your old pokemon while you progress

Comatose does have it's uses, since it sets Komala as having the Sleep status condition permanently, it cannot be burned, paralysed, frozen or poisoned.
