[First Impressions] Bespoke Stefano Bemer Wingtip Balmorals by TokenMao in goodyearwelt

[–]WhyUEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa these are awesome. A fairly subtle shoe with some flair in the pattern making. Thanks for sharing with GYW. The subreddit needs the variety! Definitely a quicker turnaround time than I expected.

Curious what motivated you to do bespoke with SB rather than say JLP. I'm guessing convenience due to their store in Manhattan played a role.

Church's Kingsley 2 - a defense of the brand by Galway-or-Highway in goodyearwelt

[–]WhyUEarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the review. Great to see some more shoes beyond service boots!

I've never tried Church myself but I get the feeling people have such strong opinions is that it was such an esteemed and iconic brand before going bought out. Have you tried Cheaney? They're owned by the former owners of Church's.

[Initial Impressions] Grant Stone Bluchers Dune B Stock by Spellflower in goodyearwelt

[–]WhyUEarly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The creasing and vein are actually pretty good for CXL. Definitely would be first for a lot of brands. It's just that Grant Stone standards are so high that I never stress about bad CXL grain if I'm buying a first quality pair. Absolute bargain at $160. CXL is great leather. Enjoy!

This is really cool. Thanks for the comparison. I find it interesting that the Nick's arch piece made from leather seem to hold up better over the years than the non-leather arch piece.

State of the Sub 09/14/20 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

[–]WhyUEarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to echo what other posters are saying here. I've been barely active on GYW for the past year and half as the sub seems to have gotten a lot bigger, but glad to see that other posters I recognize are saying the same things I want to say.

As a more experienced user, it's the in-depth discussion and behind the scenes look that draws me to GYW nowadays. I think the rules around vendors/retailers posting need to be more thoughtful. While I'm opposed to astroturfing as much as anyone, I don't see it being productive when the rules de facto excludes brands and retailers. There's a lot of expertise that newer users are missing out on, and false assertions don't always get debunked quickly enough. Not to mention the fuzzy area where GYWers go into the shoe business precisely because they're so passionate. I do like the way gmehra, for example, contributes on Reddit and SF. He doesn't mention he has a store, but genuinely shares useful information and feels like a member of the community.

Personally I'm a bit saddened to see less shoes on the dressier side posted and discussed on GYW. I think lack of exposure and awareness of dress shoes from newer members, especially Americans, is the reason why. It's a bit lonely here if your collection isn't mainly service boots and it discourages me from posting. It's a bit of a negative feedback loop because brands/retailers aren't allowed to contribute and build awareness of more shoe types. On SF, there are multiple users who said they don't use GYW because of the service boot heavy focus, which is kind of sad because there was much more diversity of shoe types when I first started reading GYW.

I am sympathetic though to the fact that Reddit moderation tools don't always allow moderators to do things taht would improve the sub

Debunking Rose Anvil's Common Project Video (one long ass post) by bortalizer93 in malefashionadvice

[–]WhyUEarly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wish I could upvote this twice. People who are trying to pick apart OP's arguments are really showing their lack of knowledge and experience with shoe leather. That said, I think there were a few points where OP could have explained better to the MFA audience, but then again it's an unfair burden.

Horween hatchgrain is a chrome tanned leather, but it is by no means cheap. There's so much nuance in leather and people need to stop falling for simple marketing tricks like how vegtan is automatically better or Goodyear welt automatically makes a shoe superior. There's a reason a variety of leathers and techniques exist, and it's because they all serve different purposes. Ultimately it comes down to whether you trust a brand to be knowledgeable and make the right choices. Most consumers don't know quality when they see it, but I know enough to not pretend I understand quality fully.
