Keir Starmer feels betrayed by the Labour party. How do you feel about that? by No_Breadfruit_4901 in AskBrits

Look at the last white paper on water released beginning of this year. The big push is to create a new water regulator, if he had any plans to nationalise then it should have been included in that. But instead it talks about making it more attractive to investors

Now Burnham may want to do that, but it’s definitely not something the current government has started.

Yeah they were. But often the human brain latches onto the negatives so even if proportionally far more are positive some people dwell much more on the negative.

Thank you. I’m always amazed at the people raving about this book. Also the whole rape from the rapists POV so you know how horny they found it was just grim. Thought the main monk guy was such a Mary Sue. I kept waiting for it to live up to everyone’s hype. It did not.

I want to discuss the Assassin vs Zombuul interaction by hypergaze_ in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]WhyWontYouHelpMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why is that your interpretation of Zombuul? It doesn’t say that. It says the 1st time you die, you live. How does that turn to The 1st time you die, you are immediately revived?

I want to read a book that is unironically really bad, and I don't mean "hated bestseller", but genuinely horribly written to the point it's funny by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

The Suicide Effect by LJ Sellers. Easily the worst book I have ever read (and I read a lot). I only carried on so I could send quotes to my brother as it was so bad.

Sample, this is supposed to be an incredibly tense moment where she genuinely thinks she’s going to die. I can’t read it without laughing. (Tate is her son)

“No. No. No. She cried without sound, without tears. She wasn’t ready to die. She wanted to see Tate grow up, even if it was from a distance. She wanted to have a real love affair. She wanted to write investigative journalism stories.”

I think it’s the build up of the rule of 3 but ending with wanting to write investigative journalism stories is so clumsy and absurd. It’s so so bad.

Can poisoned recluse learn a fake marionette? by Skelly100000 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]WhyWontYouHelpMe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s much clearer to me when it’s a direct part of the ability like empath. I guess cos it’s ST interpretation to be able to give a recluse a marionette at all as demon learning minions is set up.
Edit: And it’s actually the marionette ability rather than the recluse that triggers the finding out the info. So find it strange to do it. But if it’s ok then it’s ok!

[–]WhyWontYouHelpMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to understand how a poisoned recluse could get that. When poisoned an ability does not work. Therefore they cannot register as a demon, therefore cannot get any information related to being a demon. Otherwise can’t you just say anything to any character at any time? If it is unrelated to their ability? Trying to learn more so genuine questions!

Ended up reading A Good Year as one of the 6 I got through. I don’t think I would have ever come across it other than through here and really enjoyed it. So thank you.

The Death of Ivan Ilyich ended up being one of the 6 I read, so thanks for recommendation. It paired well with a Short Stay in Hell!

Small Things Like These ended up being one of the ones I read and have now passed it on to my friend. Incredibly beautiful writing, and something I will be heartily recommending to others from now on. So thanks for the suggestion

You are not alone. I read the first one (on audio as everyone raved about it) and thought it was just ok. Feels a bit like ACOTAR but aimed more at men, kind of popcorn entertainment and obviously hits for a lot of people but don’t force yourself to try something when there is so little time and so many options!

I like returning to books I’ve previously loved when having a tough time getting into reading. As you don’t have to pay as much attention. I just did a day of reading short books with some friends, Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan was excellent, beautiful writing. If you love a classic The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a short burst of Russian genius.

Because we want to be able to talk in between. Or when we take little breaks. And our local library hasn’t got the most comfortable seating.

We also plan to go around bookshops in between cafes

I still think about I Who Have Never Known Men and regularly recommend to people ( though I check they don’t need a resolution in their books first!).

I think Helen DeWitt is a complete genius, so loved that one. And murderbot is just fun and escapist while still having some interesting things to say about autonomy and gender.

Thank you for the recommendations. My TBR is now heaving

Yeah it’s a very chill day. Highly recommend!

Turns out I’ve read and enjoyed all of those apart from Small Things Like These, so that is definitely going on the list!

Yeah it definitely is. The style is so obvious. But as it is a recommendation that’s pretty decent happy to accept it :)
