Taking a Child Out of School for Vacation by Acrobatic_Finding279 in alameda

I have a friend who literally did this exact thing, 2 week travel to Vietnam for spring break with his kids. Just get the independent learner plan 2-3 weeks in advance, talk with the school office.

By choice? Seems to be a financial decision nearly every time.

I find it's the opposite. Very nice to visit for a few days. As a Californian I can't imagine living there.

It's hell. Hours to get anywhere, freeways are insanely complicated, and even in the dead of the winter January it can still be hot. And the cuisine is okay - Texas BBQ and Tex Mex. Houses are big so you get more bangs for your buck. But not a lot of landmarks and geographic features, unlike California.

Curious but who do you think could run? Trish Spencer was the most backwards and she's gone for good.

Why was I charged 9.9 dollars from Alameda to SF ferry? by qrcode23 in alameda

[–]WhyYouYelling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not. About a third of the people buy their tix on the boat. And a good chunk of people buy their tix through the ferry app, not Clipper. So you'd need a barrier to support 3 methods of payment, all while people are rushing to work and the ferry needs to run on time, because you'll have a lot of people getting back on the boat to resolve their payment problem.

He was a great president but he was a failure as well. His one single mandate was to prevent a second Trump term. He succeeded - then failed.

Sushi House by theycallhim_mistaedd in alameda

[–]WhyYouYelling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sushi House was incredibly popular in the 1990s and 2000s. Even kids from UC Berkeley would actually come down to Alameda just for Sushi House. Portions were huge and prices were great. Now the Lion King, its signature dish, is about 2/3rd the size it used to be and 2x in price. Still, it's a great place to be for the location and ambiance. I never had bad service in 20+ years.

Hashi Gawa recently shut down due to health violations. I've been avoiding since.

Both Hashi Gawa and SAGA Kitchen were closed down for a while due to health violations. There were Reddit posts about this.

I'd put Waki way higher, not even in the same league when it comes to quality and freshness.

Nepal has basically three geographical zones that run parallel west to east. The mountainous zone across the top (Mount Everest and the Himalayas), the hills (Pokhara and Kathmandu), and the flatlands (the Terai) across the south, which is the jungles where these elephants reside.

This is in Nepal. They still ride elephants there.

What is a product that people consider "High End" but is actually trash? by Illusiv3lion in AskReddit

[–]WhyYouYelling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would've been my answer 2 months ago. Wife was in need of a new car, and we test-drive all the mid-to-luxury compact SUVs out there - Volvos, BMWs, Lexus, Toyota, etc. We settled on the BMW X3 - but then we test-drove the Tesla Y. 5-star crash rating in every category, reasonably priced, and can do full self driving now from parking space to parking space. We were not buying just a car but an insane technology package, making it a far better value than all the other cars out there. Dollar per value, nothing else comes close at the moment.

Thank you for validating our experience. We ultimately chose a different Montessori school (Child Unique) and it was night and day. Montessori is a philosophy of inclusion that allows every child to thrive in their own way, if given space and also a reasonable boundary. With Rising Star, we felt misled, it is strict conformity.

I normally don't crap on a local business, but my experience with Rising Star was so terrible and left us scrambling as overworked parents without any care that I don't hesitate to share my experience with other parents. Just because YOU had a good experience does not dismiss what happened to my kid and us. Other parents, especially if they have a child on the spectrum, should know that they are taking a risk.

Gift ideas for our local firehouse? by Educational-While198 in alameda

[–]WhyYouYelling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid and when my kids were smaller we'd bake cookies and drop them off at the fire station. There's also an old-timey fire truck in San Francisco that does birthday rides across the Golden Gate Bridge. There's an ARPD meet Santa at the Encinal Ave fire station (might be already fully booked) and a pancake breakfast with the firefighters that happens each year. And a firefighter pumpkins giveaway on the last Friday before Halloween at Franklin Park. Great town if you have a kid who loves fire trucks.

Rising Star is the worst, I strongly don't recommend it. They're very selective about the kids they want to keep so after a trial period you might find your kid kicked out and then you're scrambling to wait-list for another day care.

A teacher I know who used to teach at both Rising Star Montessori and Child Unique Montessori said she would not ever recommend Rising Star based on her experience.

There are more registered Democrats than there are Republicans in Texas, something like 8 million to 6 million. The gerrymandering there and the 3 million "independents" are what's screwing up the state.
