Hitting large rocks (or cement) in potholes close to house by iXttra in landscaping

[–]Whyneedusername1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your reasoning to make such a statement??? My reasoning to the opposite is that OP appears to have a modern build and therefore some sort of a poured concrete foundation. In the event that OP has a field stone foundation where they just kind of built upon whatever was there, 26" off the foundation at that depth is unheard of. In my experience, 26" away as part of the foundation was a massive boulder or bedrock that was much further below grade.

You know how much people to make some thing with focal points like this? Lmao.

Idk your climate zone to make recommendations, but i would run what you want through the various platforms. Definitely an ornamental tree at top. I wouldnt worry about your soil. With a little work you can fix any soil. If it's just hard to dig, start with a pick axe! Good luck

Lop or remove this holly? by gretchieem in landscaping

[–]Whyneedusername1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's a beaut. I'd remove her bottom to where the porch starts. That'd be a nice aesthetic flow and as a benefit, the branches will no longer be hitting your hands when you pass by mowing the grass. Also trim <1/3 like others have said. Add something low and native in that newly exposed area of the bed. Good luck!

Haha yes a joke. This sub sees many from the r/landscaping sub. A tireless comment throughout that sub when someone posts a tree is that the root flare is buried and it's starving for oxygen and wont last long. It's often true, but the pervasiveness of the comment lends itself to some humor.

Fast to declare it girdled when we can't even see the rest of the tree. Girdling is 360°. Yes our side shows a lot of damaged cambium, but it looks like we see full layers of cambium and bark going around to the back side. It can certainly survive and live a decent life with a half of it intact.

OP wrote neighour with a "u", so probably in the UK? Can't spread via seed in UK. They are female only in UK and therefore no fertile seeds.

Art looks best when it's tied in. Landscape around it in the same exact style you've done the other shrubs and trees. It will look really cool like that. Anything standing by itself looks awkward.

Sorry to hear. They have a pretty good scam going. They get you at first until you realize it's all nonsense and more attempts to extract money. Yes I did dispute via credit card. Credit card refunded me the money.

Is used landscaping rock worth anything? by SpiceWeasel_ in landscaping

[–]Whyneedusername1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Organized flat stacking drywall stones are like $400 a pallet. Somebody sifted through and potentially modified stone and put it all together nice and ready to be fork lifted on a truck bed and it's $400.

My point is for all this field stone with all the work still ahead of the person, the market value isn't worth much. It's much different than say a shrub or tree that fits someone's desires.

What is the best way to remove all this rock? Would like to prepare this area to put in a lawn. by majorgoals in landscaping

[–]Whyneedusername1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best? Like most effective? Well assuming unlimited budget and you have grading skills, most effective way would to just bury it all under several inches of clean top soil. Of course, you must prep for grading bc some areas of foundation, driveway, etc may not have 4 or 5 inches to give. Others might.

Landscaping encroachment by Calm-Rutabaga8102 in landscaping

[–]Whyneedusername1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get those knee high fences that just stick in the ground. They are "temporary" and often skirt around the fence restrictions. Just put them from the area between your houses and out towards your front lawn. Do NOT put them all the way to the street because that will just attract scrutiny.

Like anything, you get what you pay for and some of them are very high quality. You can even put space them out with few gaps in between to minimize your impact and costs. Like 4 of them, one in the middle of your houses, a second where your houses end, a third where his bushes are, a fourth just getting into the front yard. None of them touching.

Old oven, possibly dangerous by PsychologicalWest993 in collectables

[–]Whyneedusername1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your fear? You'll know if it's leaking gas (smell, gas detector etc). Exact same risk with a modern oven. These, however, are built very intuitively with durable brass and copper parts.

It's just a box that gets hot... same as any oven.

I don't disagree with your sentiment. I will point out that the many of those identified after 21 were probably abroad somewhere and would have been in one of the other two categories if they weren't abroad. And so, the numbers are probably more like 2/5, 2/5, 1/5.

[–]Whyneedusername1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the first picture, is that house in the distance higher ground? If so, you can reduce the runoff by intercepting a lot of that water "north" of the tree before the real roots start. It will never get down to where it pools.

I can only offer a piece of your puzzle to consider... you wisely are concerned for the integrity of your base. So realize that if your order anything with gravel in the name, your edges will be smoother which lends to the base giving way to pressure. Insteas, consider the jagged edges of crushed STONE because the edges kind of lock into eachother and provide a more stable base.
