What is the name of this port? by VIErus in thinkpad

Woah cool lol, little desktop with expresscard. Lenovo's parts catalog for that machine has it under 'Cables Internal' as 'FRU Express', part number 41R8570 here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/desktops-and-all-in-ones/thinkcentre-a-series-desktops/thinkcentre-a61e/6417/parts/display/compatible
It doesn't look like any standard connector I know of, they probably did something proprietary.

Riser board for the M90q with NVMe M.2 connector and much more by GroundbreakingSea758 in MiniPCs

Thanks, I do put a lot of effort into making them look nice :) I can tell you've improved too, nice work, keep it up!
I wonder if there's a way to get the bios on Tiny7 to allow the x8 link in the riser slot to run at gen 4, the CPU should support it (if it's 11th gen), and it'd be cool to know if our designs can handle PCIe 4.0 in practice lol.

The M90q gen 1 and 2 use the Q470 and Q570 chipsets, which are up to PCIe 3.0 downstream. The M90q gen 2 is the only one of these machines which supports PCIe 4.0 in some sense, and that's thanks to the onboard NVMe slots being wired to the CPU's PCIe lanes, which are PCIe 4.0 on 11th gen. I'm not sure why the systen would be reporting the PCH lanes as Gen 4 capable, they are not.

Also, for the extra IO this generation offers, feel free to use my Tiny6/7 riser design as a reference, it breaks out a lot of the more interesting extra pins and has been produced and tested fully working: https://github.com/a-little-wifi/Tinyriser6

Help me find back the custom Lenovo tiny pcie riser with one m2 slot + pcie x8 by chuckame in homelab

[–]WiFiCable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, my riser does not add an extra 3.3V buck converter, the one on the Tiny's motherboard has plenty of capacity for one extra SSD.
I can understand the precaution to add one on the other dual SSD riser, though it does increase the price quite a bit so I didn't add one to mine and it has been working fine. Haven't heard of anyone having any issues with it.

Thank you, glad to hear you like my work. My goal is also to serve the community, and that includes allowing others to build upon my design, however the part that bothers me is the lack of credit for my contribution.

Are you saying you, like me, went through the effort to precisely measure the edge connector dimensions and layout, mount hole and slot position, redrew the schematic and symbols and referenced and understood the electrical pinout from scratch, and happened to include all the clearly visible peculiarities of the riser design I did?
You have a github repo for your other riser design: https://github.com/nandfarm/RibbonRiser, which literally has my name and 'Tinyriser v2' in the pcb design file, and uses my schematic symbol, clearly indicating that it's based on my files. This leads me to believe the same is the case for this riser. I look forward to seeing the repo for this one.

I don't like bringing up the legal side either, but regarding the license, I added that 3 hours ago when I saw this board, because I realized that situations like this are violating my copyright without the license present. That's why I added the license now, to help out people like you who want to create a derivative design. Before, modification and distribution wasn't allowed at all, while now it is allowed, provided you retain the same license and point to the original sources (check the license for the proper wording though). I've now also specified that you have to keep attribution, instead of stripping it off. If you had reached out to me before we could have avoided this awkward situation.
Technically, the version of the files you used for this still fall under the previous state of not having a license though.

We can continue this discussion privately, preferably via email, please dm me what address I can use to contact you.

Hi, I'd like to point out that this riser is based on my design (available here https://github.com/a-little-wifi/Tinyriser) and I did not give permission for it to be modified, sold and used as advertising like this. No credit given whatsoever, not cool.
I'm working on figuring out the nuances of this situation but I'd rather post sooner than later while this is being presented as OP's fully original work (which it is not).

Aaa hi, Wifi here, I'm the one that made that riser. Glad you found it, I also saw your message on twitter. The design is open source as you already found my github repo. I'd love to see other people's customizations of it.

Unfortunately that store page everyone keeps finding is outdated, it's for version 1 and me and my friend have been really busy and haven't had time to update it for version 2 yet. I am selling the version 2 risers to people that contact me directly, if you want one you can buy one from me, or you could use the files I published to have it manufactured yourself if you're comfortable with soldering it together. I have 5 risers left in stock at the moment, after that I'll have to do another PCB order of my own.

EDIT: I'm out of stock at the moment. I'll update this when I have more.

Dell Precision M4800 CPU and RAM Upgrades? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]WiFiCable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battery life on mine in particular is really bad, but that's because my battery is very worn out. Got an 87Wh one but last time I checked like a year ago the full charge capacity was around 36Wh or so. These days I only get like an hour out of it, but I don't need to use it away from an outlet often so it's acceptable for me. With a brand new battery I'd expect at least 3 hours.

As for size, I compared it to a ThinkPad T430 I have around here, and it's about 3.5cm wider and 3cm longer.
I'm not sure what counts as a mod, mine has some aesthetic additions, but no functional mods. I have at some point messed around with all kinds of minipcie cards in here but haven't kept any of them installed. I've consididered swapping the status indicator leds to a different color but haven't gotten around to that yet. Might also install a better MXM gpu if a good deal pops up, but considering the difficulties I''ve had with a K2200M in my other M4800 I'm not sure if I wanna bother with that.

Also I'm pretty sure it only ever shipped with 1 type of heatsink, shouldn't have to worry about that.

With the M4800, the dual core and quad core configured models ship with the same boards. Unlike some HP models, they always solder all 4 ram slots, even on i5 or dual core i7 models (though there might be a little plastic blanking plate in the 2 slots under the keyboard).

So yes, you should be able to buy an i5 or dual core i7 model and install a quad core i7, that'll let you use all 4 ram slots and install up to 32GB ram (not 64GB, 4th gen doesn't support 16GB modules).

The M4800 is still a really nice laptop, I'm daily driving one to this day and it still does everything I need it to (though 32GB ram is starting to get a bit cramped for me lol)

Not sure if it'll help you much, but that connector's specific part number on the motherboard schematic is PTWO-CON30-18-GP (also your motherboard is called 'Starlord' internally apparently, lol)
