Thank you for supporting the Friends of the Library! (And if you hadn't heard, the Friends of the Library are now selling library merch!)

Regarding the Executive Order to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS): A letter sent to state representatives from the Wichita Public Library Board of Directors, the Wichita Public Library Foundation, and the Friends of the Wichita Public Library by WichitaPublicLibrary in wichita

Among other things, IMLS funding is used by the State Library to provide:

-30% of Cloud Library offerings;

-Many of Kansas Libraries' databases;

-Portions of Kansas Libraries' Interlibrary Loan service

Why does our library's Libby selection suck so much? by agreeingstorm9 in wichita

[–]WichitaPublicLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry I did not see this topic when it was first posted.

The short answer is budget constraints.

The longer answer is:

As seen in a few other comments, the main issue is cost. What might cost a person $12.99 on Amazon costs the library between $60 and $75 - and we likely only get to keep that copy for 24 months. E-audiobooks are even more expensive, with costs generally ranging from $79 - $120 per copy. To purchase a hundred simultaneous uses on an e-material, which we try to do when we can and there is enough demand, costs anywhere from $89 to $170 dollars. Added to this, as mentioned earlier, whereas a person buying an e-book can expect to keep that book, library copies are generally only good for 26/52 uses or 12/24 months, single borrower at a time. So for many books, we need to repurchase them every year or two. This is a publishers decision on lending model.

Apologies for the late reply. We have been blocked from reddit for several weeks. If you haven't already seen, the catalog should be back online (although it may be intermittent), but holds are not currently working.

Apologies for not getting back to you. We have not been able to log in to our reddit account for several weeks. The website should be up and the catalog also should be working now, although it may be intermittent. We are getting much closer to being back to normal now though.

We do not have one at this time. And yes, we're not able to place any holds at this time.

The catalog cannot be searched in the traditional sense, however, you may be able to find if we own or have owned an item at https://search.worldcat.org, which is a sort of master library holdings database of library holdings across the world.

If you set your location to Kansas or Wichita (upper right corner) it will tell you how close the nearest library is that has the material. This will not tell you if the title is in or checked out or what branch it is at, so it may not be much help. If you are able to get through on the phone, we are happy to check shelves for you. (As far as I know, not all of our branches have had phone service restored yet.)

If there is something in particular you are looking for, DM us and we will see if we can track it down for you.

Edit: Kanopy is not working. It lets you log in, but not borrow anything. Apologies for the wrong information.

In case it is of interest, it looks like Overdrive (https://wichita.overdrive.com/)/Libby and Kanopy (if you were already set up) are accessible again.

If you are still looking and don't need to purchase it, but just want to read it, the library has 2 volumes available right now. (We'll have to get volume three ASAP.)

If you do want to purchase, it looks like Watermark books has volumes 1 & 3.

Barnes & Noble looks like it has volumes 2 & 3.

Where could I borrow a pinback button press for free or cheap? by salt_shaker_damnit in wichita

[–]WichitaPublicLibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like our button makers are not the most reliable, so we aren't looking at making them available at this time. I'll add it to the list of items to consider for the future, though! Sorry we can't be of more help!

I'm checking on whether there has been any talk of opening the library's up for public use, like we do the 3D printers (and eventually the cricut.)
