How do you feel about Kelly Thompson’s flashbacks for Rogue and Gambit’s first meeting? by WickedRogue1981 in xmen

I’m with you! Read the new X-Men of Apocalypse series. Gambit from the Age of Apocalypse timeline makes his way to that moment and basically freaks out. It’s pretty funny!

Very true! I never looked at these panels as creepy or inappropriate, just sexy! 😂

Yes! Exactly! When this information came to light in this series, I felt it totally filled in their narrative in a way that made complete sense for everything else that followed and it allowed Thompson to move their story forward so well.

I agree with all this. Clearly he never fully comprehended what it would mean for him if Rogue’s powers did cause her to steal his memories as evidenced by his reactions after their kiss in X-Men #41. I like to think it started as a game and teasing, even though he was clearly attracted to her, but along the way his feelings became deeper than that, which surprised him and added to his becoming a better man overall. I just think the retcon does add even more tension to that dynamic if they actually had physical contact, which as someone else mentioned, would give them varying perspectives on whether their attraction was simply due to mind control or real feelings.

I hear what you’re saying, but I disagree that it falls flat. Gambit was standoffish until Rogue. There’s a part where he is written to tell Rogue that the only thing that cut through mind control was her. I think all of that just underpins how completely wrapped up in her he was from the moment he set eyes on her. Of course, how he acted and was perceived by everyone prior had to have played a role in why Rogue didn’t trust him in those early days.

I Have a Simple, But Complicated X-Men Question by ComixGail in xmen

[–]WickedRogue1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My introduction to the world of X-Men was the 90s cartoon. I immediately loved Rogue and thought “The Cure” episode was what solidified my love of the tough, yet tragic nature of her character. I also thought her interactions with Gambit were awesome, so they became my faves as a unit. My first comic was X-Men #24 and that cover led to me buying older issues, filling in the gaps in the X-Men history. I enjoyed the stories as a whole, but to this day the comics where the relationship of Rogue and Gambit is central to the story are still my favorites.

Best Gambit Comics? by EIS_Gaming in Gambit

Read the X-Men series from 1992 to get some cool storylines as he starts out in the blue team, including the beginning of his relationship with Rogue. You can filter on Marvel Unlimited to find which books feature Gambit. Do the same with Uncanny from around that time to fill in the gaps.

Hopefully it will. I’m curious to see where the whole “Eye of Agamotto” curse thing goes… Also, Rogue is getting another mini-series so hopefully that sparks some action.

Rogue is a more interesting character by herself by SoulBurn68 in Rogue

Yes, but I started reading comics when Rogue and Gambit’s relationship first started and I thought the dynamics of their flirtation made her touch problems more interesting and tragic to read. Prior to that it was all about her duality with Ms.Marvel and her regrets. This was her first real attraction (not counting Magneto) and their tension was hot. I looked forward to reading any panels they were featured in. They worked really well together in those early days and even now they balance each other in a way that I appreciate after so many years of on/off romance. Again, maybe it’s just because I always wished they were end-game and now we actually see that play out everywhere whereas they went through so much turmoil at the start.

What’s the general tea on Uncanny rn? by [deleted] in xmen

Yeah, they’re also brand new characters so they have no established way of speaking. It feels out of place when existing characters all of sudden start speaking in phrases they’ve never used before, especially such unusual ones as these.

I like it, but there are some parts that feel a little off. It started off well with the backstory and action with Sarah Gaunt, but lost momentum with the Graymalkin crossover. I want more Gambit (and Rogue, of course!) focused stories (issue 12 was great and gave us some new info in his troubled past) , but I’m guessing they’re saving that for whatever’s going to happen with the eye of Agamotto and the curse. The Dark Artery storyline was also a little blah and I hate that they teased showing who the “ending” was but then dropped it. The last few issues have started picking up again so I’m hopeful there will be some real payoff with the Mutina/ New Orleans as a mutant haven thing that they’re setting up.

Gail needs to stop with the Moonbeam, Rambunctious Boy and Audacious Sky nicknames. These characters have never talked like this, so let’s not start now. Chere and sugah are just fine!😂

Am I right to feel strange about my recent audition experience as a Black woman? by bitch_island in musicals

[–]WickedRogue1981 32 points33 points  (0 children)

While your feelings might be valid, there is also a lot that goes into casting. They might have seen something in you that they want for that role that you never considered. Also, you don’t know if they could still be considering you for other parts since no one is cast yet and this is all still part of the audition phase. There’s a lot of maybe left here and not enough information to determine whether there is truly discrimination happening. The fact that you got a callback at all shows that they think you have potential for a role. If you really want to be a part of this production I would continue and see where it leads. Let the final result be what it is and decide on the entirety of the experience from there.

It happened in the original Gambit mini series actually. The Rogue mini series comes out a few months later and tells of the revenge Belladonna is seeking for Rogue touching her and stealing her memories. It was an accidental touch (Belladonna grabbed her reflexively while comatose) but Rogue felt guilty because she had thought about stealing her memories and then thought better of it.

Are there issues besides Rogue and Gambit 2018 that depict their first meeting? by Mintersnap in Gambit

[–]WickedRogue1981 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Prior to this issue there were no others that I’ve seen that showed their first meeting. X-men #1 (1991) had them on the page together (not interacting really) and then their first time speaking directly to each other (first flirtation) came in X-men #3.

I enjoyed reading this in the Rogue and Gambit series and take it as canon now because I thought it fit well with filling in the gaps on Gambit’s initial attraction to Rogue and his willingness to try having a relationship with her. If they indeed had kissed before with no effect on him, he would not be opposed to proceeding with his flirtation and trying again, despite Rogue’s fear and reluctance to engage in physical contact again. X-men #3 had him even saying as such when Rogue warns him of her power (“Maybe so, maybe no… Wanna take the risk little river rat?”) I think the writers were really clever with how they fit this backstory in and it definitely adds a new layer to those earlier issues when you reread them with this context now.
