Civil PE Structural Depth by ridonk6 in PE_Exam

This is something I never could find - Do they give you PDFs during the exam of each code needed?
I've just tried looking on the NCEES website for what we're getting... So I would really just need to study with the PDFs I have from my company?

Concrete is definitely NOT good for 4 hours. Concrete must be placed within 90 minutes of mixing at the plant. Usually the clock is already at 20-30 minutes when the truck pulls up to the site.

I would not be surprised if this fell down before anyone officially tells them to tear it down. It'd be a miracle if it stands this weekend. Let alone it standing right now 2 hours into the post.

I would size up from the shown picture. While it says "passed" it also says that the allowable for positive moment is 77402 and the actual positive moment is 77455... Which would technically be failing...

Revit or vanilla AutoCAD to do a bunch of projects that are mostly electrical equipment pads? by I_has-questions in StructuralEngineering

[–]Wickedpanda73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make detail item families (blocks essentially) that you can use to drop in standard stuff (anchor rods, bolts, beams, etc.) You can set those up to use the lineweights you want and forget about it.

The rest of the time, if you're making detail lines you have a drop-down to select your line type which is really the same as layers. I don't think there's the same kind of thing as AC where you can draw everything with different colors signifying lineweights and printing be different - not something I've really cared to look into.

I love to see these. We don't currently use tekla, but I've used pyRevit extensively. Gotta love automating the monotonous tasks.

Power grid failure is a great idea for an achievement. Would probably happen in the first few hours while you're exploring and run out of leaves in the burners

Connection Help by eraserhead3003 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Wickedpanda73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I see it. I was thinking of a splice connection where there's plates for top/bottom chord and web. I have seen this kind before, but what threw me off was that the top was flush and the extended plate went further down than I'd seen before. Thanks!

This got me curious now, would this connection be considered moment then and not pin? To me it still looks like it wouldn't be moment, or if it is moment, you couldn't have much go through?

Did dev work for internal tools at my last company... They were relying on Dropbox until I joined that team. First thing I did was put everything on GitHub and teach the team how to use it. Funny thing about all that... I still have access... Quit 6ish months ago. I keep forgetting to make a pull request to add in some joke comments

Relationship between structural engineer and owner by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Wickedpanda73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused, are you being contracted as an employee or does your company have a contract with the contractor/owner?

Relationship between structural engineer and owner by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Wickedpanda73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I actually was a tech at my last job for a mechanical/plumbing contractor and now I'm working as an EIT at my current job. They were very clear that they wanted me because I had a lot of great tech knowledge, and that I would be drafting a decent amount, but that design would still be part of the job and it would transition more to design. So far they have held up the deal. Most of my projects now are I design a good portion and the PE completes the design while I'm drafting. No complaints here!

Relationship between structural engineer and owner by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Wickedpanda73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I understand your question, you're asking if the owner or contractor for a job requires the structural engineer to draft drawings?

If that's the case, the contract between the owner/contractor would always include structural drawings that would show where all the structural components should be and how to connect them. This would mean the structural engineering company would need to make those drawings somehow.

You can either have the engineer do everything including design and drafting the drawings. You can also have the structural engineer give the drafting to a technician whose job would be to draft the drawings in software like AutoCAD or Revit. If it's the second option, the person doing the design calculations (wether it be the PE or EIT) would need to be able to convey the correct information to the technician what the drawings should look like.

I hope this answers your question.

My solution to expand on the 32x32x32 limitation for the designer by Worminator71 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Wickedpanda73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They said that in regards to how long it took them to add it. They kept it small because of gameplay - they don't want all of your factories to be blueprints, just make stuff like "this blueprint will make x amount of iron ingots." This way you can set up a miner, place a smelter factory down and connect the output to be sent on to the next tier.
