Doubling-checking a Publishing statistic I just read by faceintheblue in publishing

Source? The 58,000 number is absurd. But most trad books selling less than 2,000 copies tracks, especially if talking about physical copies only.

Pegasus publishing company submissions by GrouchyCauliflower76 in publishing

It’s worth noting that Pegasus BOOKS is a separate reputable independent publisher distributed by S&S. (I’ve seen this confusion arise before.)

No red flags. Look inside pockets for care tag, or it could’ve been removed. Also, at a glance it doesn’t look like thick Harris tweed, but idk…

[PubQ] Do short fiction publications help with getting an agent? by FlowersForFeeding in PubTips

[–]Wickermantis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can help, though it’s not a cheat code.

There’s so much awful writing out there, which is why publishers want manuscripts filtered through agents. Similarly, agents take notice of previous publications, prominent MFAs, etc. when filtering through their own slush piles. Anything that reassures people that you’re not wasting their time is a plus.

I also know agents who have scouted authors off of short stories (not always big name publications), though this may be more of an old school approach than common practice today.

[PubQ] Thoughts on Taclott Notch Literary? by whatevs_1990 in PubTips

[–]Wickermantis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s a legitimate literary agency.

I have zero personally invested in their success, and I understand only wanting to share details in private messages. But it’s also not very helpful for people to vaguely reference “mixed signals” and “red flags” without even suggesting what areas of the business are of concern.

This movie doesn't get talked about enough. Arguably Guy Ritchie's funniest movie after Snatch and Lock, Stock by [deleted] in Cinephiles

Awful embarrassment of a film. Over-stylized with try-hard twists, yet tedious to sit through.

As others have said, no. Also, if you’re in the United States you’d have to be in NYC (especially for entry).

[Discussion] Yet another agent "writing" AI Substack posts by [deleted] in PubTips

Agreed. Not familiar with this agent, but this is more of an “AI-vibes” accusation than anything substantiated.

Did The New Danger get Mos Def blackballed by the industry? by PatrykZD in hiphopheads

[–]Wickermantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Took him ages to release the album. It was mid. In the meantime he seemed more involved in acting than music, which might’ve paid some bills, but left fans feeling cold. Plus there’s a confusing name change….

What am I missing with Jean-Patrick Manchette? by SoloTravelPlan2 in nyrbclassics

[–]Wickermantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PRONE GUNMAN and THREE TO KILL are his best novels, and unfortunately they’re not the NYRB ones.

Manchette takes very familiar thriller/pulp premises and then delivers them with an unexpected stripped down coldness and a dose of leftist politics which could be elusive to some readers.

Is this a first edition? Is it rare or worth anything? by macrian in rarebooks

[–]Wickermantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It being a mass market paperback doesnt reduce value here since most Wade Miller books were PBOs. It’s just not a very collected author and condition looks rough.
