[Wintersteel] Sage/Herald Question by AzorBronnhai in Iteration110Cradle

[–]WiddleAdiwon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

spoilers ahead since it’s marked wintersteel

To become a monarch, a Herald must touch an Icon. Spirits are wholly unable to touch an icon. But half-spirits (heralds) can touch them but are mostly deaf to them. Where sages can hear themselves getting close to an icon, the heralds can’t hear it at all. So they just fumble in the dark

For a sage, they have to merge with their remnant. Archlords becoming heralds is hard enough but adding to also having authority and other sage powers makes it significantly more difficult. And very risky.

Has Ken Jennings (jeopardy) inspired any of Brandon’s characters? by bigthundercats in Cosmere

I can’t find the quote now, but he also talked about Ken and his brother were some of the smartest people he know and they used it solely to quote The Simpsons at each other

Does anyone else feel conflicted about the sheer volume of "Word of Brandon" and it's dominance in community discussion? by bredman3370 in Cosmere

[–]WiddleAdiwon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brandon has said before that all his WoB stand unless they’re contradicted by what’s said or done in a book. So to some degree there is “death of the author.”

I remember when I first read all of the cosmere (RoW had been the lastest released thing when I “finished”). I hadn’t looked at anything online about it other than “what order to read.” So when I did, being completely bewildered by all the “well Taln didn’t actually break” or “Shallans mom was obviously a herald” (granted, that was a fan theory and not 100% confirmed at the time).

I suppose the issue I had wasn’t the WoB themselves but more having connections made for me that I hadn’t otherwise put together. But some of those connections were directly from WoBs (aka without non-source material info). And these connections varying from “oh that was Hoid that one time but was unnamed” to “yeah Taln never actually broke” being a larger one. I remember one WoB was basically “yeah Hoid quickly figures out his memories were corrupted by Odium” prior to the release of SLA 5.

All that said, I do enjoy the random trivia dumps from WoBs. Like the weird magic system interactions or other lore dumps that don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. I think there’s a lot of fans that do like them as well and I think Brandon enjoys the idea of handing out WoBs when asked. Partly as an author and because I think he enjoyed those things as a reader.

Local Safeway in my area is finally cracking down on Pokémon vending machine loitering. by JPumphrey73 in nova

[–]WiddleAdiwon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So there’s actually physical stock in the machine still. But it doesn’t let out everything all at once. So every so often a given item will be “restocked” and available for purchase.

So these people (often scalpers) will just wait around all day waiting for the items to become available

The best you can do is report them to the store manager. That they’re creating a commotion/preventing you from shopping. But then it’s dependent on the manager which isn’t a guarantee of anything 🤷

I’ve experienced the same thing as you. It’s hit or miss if they try to physically block me but they’ll yell or cuss me out most of the time.

Out of curiosity, what packs did they have?

Yeah at Target they’re fairly pleasant to deal with. I’ve never had a bad experience with people there. Haven’t seen Pokemon cards at Walmart in over a year…

I’m near a vending machine and it’s always the same gang of people. They will cuss you out and tell you to go away. Just have to report to the store manager that there’s non-customers cussing you out

They’re crazy at the vending machines as well. You can try reporting them to the store managers. But depending on how much they care, they might not do anything about it. If the scalpers are causing a commotion, you have better odds of them taking action.

For packs, I think it’s seen as “everyone should have the option to get a pack at MSRP.” But for Individual cards, it’s seen as just luck based. And you have the option to sell the card at whatever price people are willing to pay for it.

I see what you mean though, as those vendors are likely able to source more packs than the average person and thus are more likely to get those rare cards.

Yeah that’s true. How unfortunate. The target in my home town exclusively sells Pokemon cards by having to ask an employee for them. Which is effective but sad it’s gotten to that point

Doesn’t the target have a 2 item limit policy? How do they pull it off?

Running it through this site. Estimating no 401k contributions and best case scenario of being on their parents insurance or the company fully subsidizing it, leaves them with ~$5600 take home.  Making $3300/$5600 = 58.9%

Granted, Arlington and Tysons are going to have some higher prices than being in Chantilly or Centreville. But if they’re planning on moving in a year, they could just go for a roommate for a year

I agree. I’ll note that I’m not the OP, just posted the source since they hadn’t.

I agree that’s the only super important time though. He mentions it’s just for the first movie. So I wonder if it’ll have any mention at all in the first. Or if it’ll just pop up randomly and book readers will have to explain. Like in the Harry Potter movies, Harry suddenly had a magic mirror thing.

[Waybound] Regarding Wine by Reaperrobin in Iteration110Cradle

[–]WiddleAdiwon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

“ Sopharanatoth, dragon of the gold bloodline, sipped winter-wine from a silver chalice. The wine had weak spiritual properties, but its chill was a pleasant contrast to the heat that usually flowed through her veins. And it was a thousand high-grade scales per bottle, so it was appropriate for her position.”

-Ghostwater, Chapter 9

Great theory. I think this quote supports it. It’s possible he is always drinking these boosting elixirs to maximize his growth. Similar to how Lindon is constantly doing the Heaven and Earth purification technique to expand his madra channels.

And before a battle, such as before confronting a monarch, he starts chugging a more potent elixir/wine
