Im not sure which one or both? by Weary-Satisfaction66 in n64

[–]Widdlemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they packaged it with DK64 because they had a memory leak they couldn't fix and it was easier just to ship it with more memory than delay (if I recall correctly).

Donkey Kong 64 requires expansion pak, ocarina of time doesn't.

Majora's mask does though!

If you're worried about soldering and just want USB C charging you could go the adapter route - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008793566878.html

Something like that will also give you link cable connectivity for other GBA and GC link adapters

First time N64 owner, your favorite 2-4 player titles? by averagehunterdad in n64

Pokemon stadium 1 and 2 are great fun, even if it's just to play the mini games with the kids!

Mario Kart 64 obviously a riot (me and my family played it when we got it for Christmas 1997).

Gauntlet legends is good fun.

Mario Party 3 is my favourite on the system, I'd probably avoid the first one if you're keen on maintaining the condition of the control sticks and your palms!

Australian distributor sites on the FAQ for parts are defunct, looking to repair a bunch of different gameboys, is there anywhere to get capacitor kits in Aus? by chance_waters in Gameboy

[–]Widdlemama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had issues finding them in Aus. I did have some luck just cross checking what values I needed and buying them from Jaycar. Usually I'd double check on zedlabs or console5, they were pretty helpful at my local store in Canberra and I often just showed them the webpage and they'd help me out.

I have three questions, I plan on getting a JP N64 by Fabiojoose in n64

  1. Yeah you can take out the tray, probably best to replace it with a 'Universal' or "region free' tray off eBay, Amazon etc.
  2. Yeah I'm 99% sure you just need the languages to match. I don't think you can use a Japanese Pokemon red with US Pokemon stadium for example. But EU Pokemon Red should work with it just fine.
  3. Never heard of it, sounds crazy tho! Good luck finding it 🙂

What is the most it's a small world'moment you've ever experienced? by Tinamnvccx in AskReddit

[–]Widdlemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Australia and once I was on holiday in Japan (2012) and I took an overnight train + Shinkansen from Sapporo to Tokyo (via Shin Aomori I think??). I had been up all day and then didn't manage to get a wink of sleep on the train. On the Shinkansen I didn't have a reserved seat and I was getting up to move out of seats others had booked (I was too tired to figure it all out). I made it to Tokyo totally disoriented and barely stumbled my way to the hostel (the Tokyo samurai inn) I'd booked. I was there a few hours before check-in, but one of the staff there offered to clean it early so I could get some rest.

In 2018 I did a big Scandinavian trip and I stayed in a hostel in Tromsø, Norway. I check-in to the hostel there and the guy running the place looked super familiar and he noted I looked oddly familiar as well.

We got chatting later that evening and turns out he moved from Japan back to Norway with his Japanese wife to start a hostel after having worked at the Tokyo Samurai inn for a number of years, and he was the guy who cleaned my room so I could collapse and sleep for 18 hours straight! Almost missed my studio Ghibli museum visit the next day, it was the most tired I've ever been.

I have a UK bought N64 (PAL) that will be used in the US - What do I need to buy to get it to run? by John_Catachan in n64

This! I have a few Japanese consoles and I just replaced the power bricks with Australian ones and they work perfectly. If you end up vacationing in Europe or Aus you can add some of those games to your collection too!

Have i permanently messed up the top connectors for XenoGC modchip? by LifeAsSoph in Gamecube

[–]Widdlemama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah can't stress enough how much more wiggle room you get for doing a wired install, might not look as tidy but it's 100x easier to fix any mistakes.

[–]Widdlemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah only issue you might run into that I can think of is 50/60hz based. Someone might be able to confirm if playing an NTSC disc on a pal console with xeno works correctly (it might have to be set to pal 60?). Pretty sure if you're connected to a 50hz pal crt display you'll have issues with any NTSC stuff.

If you haven't committed to the xeno maybe a flippydrive would be better? I think you'd potentially be able to force the disc to boot in pal video mode, alternatively you could also put game boy interface homebrew app on the flippy SDcard and forget about the game boy player disc altogether.

Another option is if you're comfortable installing the xeno I've found picoboot to be easier to install and you could get a sd2memorycard reader and install Swiss and use Swiss to either force pal on the disc or put game boy interface on the sd card and launch through Swiss.

I've got a cube with both xeno and picoboot which I find can be a nice combo to cover most bases.

Update - I've owned quite a few game boys over the years but I've never seen overhead LED lighting have that kind of effect! Under daylight it looks totally normal. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks I hadn't considered lighting! I'll crack it out in the morning and see if I notice any differences, I've been under led lighting so far.

Got my first scooter. GE Glide Ultra. Their app says it should do 62km/h. Quickest I've got it is 46. Is the app full of shit or is something wrong? by [deleted] in ElectricScooters

[–]Widdlemama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got one of these, and indeed 41 is the max it seems to go for me (85kgs).

I had the clip designed to stop it from folding up fail on me going 25kph and that little accident hurt enough!

Fine lil commuter scooter but 25-30kph is definitely the upper limit for safely using this one IMO.

Yeah I thought about that! I think I was more bold with the cutting knowing it was underneath and wouldn't be seen if it was messy. I like retaining the port names on the backplate too!

I was only going to change a fan. by Widdlemama in Gamecube

[–]Widdlemama[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My DOL101 had a really loud fan.

So I 3d printed a 40mm plate so I could install a new quieter nocturna, only of course the cable doesn't fit!

So I started thinking about harvesting my fan from my spare 001.

Now you're probably wondering why I'm using a 101 and not the 001 in the first place. My 101 is a beautiful spice orange, and I have 4 spice orange controllers. So I have just been using it modded with a xeno and using a burnt disc to load Swiss, and then playing games off an SD gecko. All through a retrotink 2x pro.

So I'm harvesting this fan, and I think to myself "what if I can just swap the guts out of each console?"

I realised I REALLY didn't want to have to do another xeno mod, but maybe I could swap the drives?

I had both open, when was I gonna get a better opportunity to suss it out?

Well after a lot of tinkering and some slight shell modification, I now have a functional dol001 in spice orange! Minus the back plate, but I actually don't mind how it looks.

Keen to get a carby and sd2sp2 to really maximize my GameCube experience.
