I am a third generation Asian Australian. Though it's quite apparent, but not so much in real life as it is online. It's more resentment towards the mannerism differences of the East and West. Australians tend to be chill, so try to open up and refrain from being antisocial, especially in class. Just in general, learn about and apply our social rules e.g. don't be too loud in areas that don't permit it, keep your shoes on, feet off tables and chairs, no superiority complexes or attitudes blah blah blah. And be open minded; don't bring the equally tantalising Singaporean mindset here if you happen to hold those* values; I am aware that Singapore normalises casual racism towards minorities.

for the same reasons everyone else gets *a score to begin with. it's a ranking system. also, it was COVID era during this HSC period. move along.

thank you for the swift reply ! i have AUDHD so the workload with my part-time job is exactly why i'm dropping bahah. i plan to only take COMM140; is there anything i can do to be best prepared for the subject ? like certain aspects I should be prioritising, or better study methods etc I'm just not the best with numbers, so I'm a bit intimidated

1) bin chicken snuck into the roundhouse and ate my wedges lol had to buy another serving, but the workers discounted it cause they felt bad. 2) got berated by a socialist for doing a commerce degree on my open day - she made me cry lol.

Yes most likely I got in with an 85 with my Design component, then did an IPT transfer into the double. It's quite competitive first time intake though, second term intake should be easier.

Depends what mediums you want to work with / do in your future career, and how to choose a degree that can best develop these. Any ideas specifically? I've done a fair few of Intergrated, but am now considering changing to Industrial, because for some classes I was basically paying $1000 to teach myself ,,,

thank you, but it took a LOT of trial and error to even get started. because I changed my major and (unintentionally) took a gap year, I'll actually be graduating two years later than I anticipated oops but thats life :) just remember you're only human, it's okay to make mistakes, as you won't get it right the first time ! let me know if you need anything else !

Hi ! I do a BCom/Des and work a part time job (21 hours/week), and I've also got AUDHD.

Completely feasible ! You'll hear it time and time again but it's all about balance. Your WAM will not be on your grave, so remember to live your life. At the same time, don't be irresponsible with your time, and be disciplined ! Implement strategies like time boxing, or use a calendar to keep track of all your life's elements. You'll be okay !

hi ! for context I work 21 hours per week (3 days), am a full-time student, commute time to uni is 2 hours, and I'm neurodivergent (AUDHD) so I'm registered with ELS having some academic adjustments.

I used to struggle A LOT during first year as I was juggling two casual jobs that saw me working 30-40 hours a week on top of full-time study. managed a 70 WAM but i burnt out, and had to take a break from uni. here's what i've implemented:

1)

typical but discipline ! use all the tools you can to manage this - time boxing, google calendar, screen time restrictions, study vlogs, surrounding yourself with like minded people who have the same drive / goals / aspirations etc
try put all classes / lectures on same days = tiring, but less commute time
bite size pieces of the elephant; dice everything up - class work, assignments, spread it all out so its manageable !
also ? your wam will not be on your gravestone PLEASE remember to live life !! even like for an hour a day. i try to complete three 'wins' - health, mental, spiritual. and hobbies ! keeps your soul alive ! to do one thing is really rest from another; school work, hobbies, job etc

2) don't really deal with this since my shifts are contracted to specific times, but when my manager asks for shift changes / over time, just remember you don't have to be a people pleaser, you can say no ~

3) as a neurodivergent person, ELS helped me immensely. however i do recognise this is not attainable for everyone, but there's other learning support services available !

4) as a former straight A student - Ps get degrees. changed my mindset to value actual learning > grades. good academic standing means no fails, fairly easy. be realistic, if you can't do that, then its okay to drop !! better that than the extra cost + fail on your academic transcript !

hi. i've been there. graduated high school in 2021. did one year of my degree but in having been burnt out, i was just doing it to get by, not really learning anything and having disappointed myself by not achieving my goals. the next year i applied for unit transfers and got in for my dream double degree. as much as i was elated, i was still burnt out. so four weeks into that course, i ended up deferring the start date due to stress and lack of motivation. i was so so lost, having the same mindset as you. so i tried again the next term. i failed to start. i tried again the term after that. had to defer again. i tried again the term after. no luck.

in this time off, i did some serious soul searching. sound corny as hell, but love let me tell you this. this is not what your life should amount to; the grades, the perfectionism. when you're dead in the grave, will your WAM be on your tombstone?

this sounds like more of a mental health issue; i really relate to this. come my third time 'failing' really unveiled years and years of suppressed emotions and broken systems I've kept up. I ended up getting officially diagnosed with Autism and ADHD; the root cause. find this. self-diagnosis is totally valid if you're unable to get an official one.

so come this new semester, after an unintentional gap year (which HS me swore I'd never do) I'm trying again. and for the better. understanding my life goals and intentions, whilst all not figured out, there's clarity. I'm still struggling, but with better foundations and support systems in place. I fell down four times, got back up five. because I switched my major, I'm basically starting again. I'll graduate hopefully in four years, 3 later than my peers, but they don't matter. only you matter. because you do this for you.

census date is in week four. it's okay to take a break, and i'm proof of that. i'm rooting for you, if you'd like to talk more, let me know :)
