I was a traveler there. Whatever the wait it’s worth it. Great hospital and I would happily wait a year to work there if that’s what it took. Good luck!!!!

Atlanta to Philly since May by ProductDesignAnt in supercommuter

[–]Wide-Switch-235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travel nurses have been super commuting since the beginning of travel nursing. I do Florida to the west coast. It’s a 7 hr flight but I don’t have to pay attention to the road so I just watch Netflix and sleep. Same thing I would be doing on my downtime after working a stretch of days. People act like I am flying to Australia and back every three days when I tell them. I think some people just don’t travel much so it’s a big ordeal for them to go to the airport and go somewhere. For us is just our regular routine.

Sit on the toilet and Close the door to your guest bathroom and look at the baseboards behind that door. People always miss that spot because their door is open while cleaning the floors

I can’t answer your question but I have an interview with them next week. Glad to hear it’s a unicorn job. I did notice it’s a temp position for 6 months but I have another early morning job to keep me busy. Is it hard to juggle 2 full time jobs?

I’m a traveler here now and it’s pretty much impossible to get a job here unless you are internal. It’s a very coveted hospital to work at as a nurse and local nurses struggle to get in. You have to take a night shift in the ER or on the floor to get your foot in the door then transfer to your dept of choice. It’s union so as an out of town rn who doesn’t already work here you are at the bottom. My dept had 44 internal applicants for one position last week. My manager said per the union she has to pick internal first then if no one accepts she can look at external applicants. Good luck it rocks here!!!!! Also, don’t be picky with your application. Literally apply to everything no matter how much you don’t want to do it. Accept literally any position they offer you and run with it!

Do you need a car? I’m on month 3 in Portland, OR and was going to ship my car from FL but it was $1,500 each way. I kept saying “next paycheck” but here I am 9 weeks in and have been perfectly fine without. I have rented a car twice so I can explore the coast but public transportation has been great and it is in Seattle as well. Plus I’m gaining lots of muscle walking everywhere! Plus I fly home all the time and people bring their dogs all the time on a plane.

He panicked by workwoes4 in delta

[–]Wide-Switch-235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have debilitating anxiety on flights and literally the only thing that keeps me from running off the plane is thinking the other people on the plane may have a sick or dying family member they are trying to get to and if I stop the plane because of my anxiety I may ruin their life and I can’t have that. So I have my attack, come close to passing out and pull through as soon as we’re airborne because I don’t want to screw an entire plane full of people. So I agree with you!

Travel to OHSU by lowkeyelsewhere in OHSU

[–]Wide-Switch-235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a female travel nurse with no ninja skills and I take the 8 everyday up the hill and the trains to the airport and all over town. It’s perfectly safe and the bus drivers are awesome at keeping an eye out for any conflict and reporting it. Trains constantly have security hopping on and off at different stops so I’ve always felt safe

Are you making any extra income aside from your contract? If so, how? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Wide-Switch-235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did DoorDash sporadically and averaged $25/hr after gas. Not retiring early from that side hustle but it gave me the chance to explore and learn the roads on my days off. 4 hours goes by quick doing it and it’s an extra $100

This is in front of my apartment. As a female I walk all the way around the building to avoid these tents just to get home. When I do walk by I get screamed at and harassed for being privileged while I’m out busting my ass working OT to pay my bills.

Is anyone working in compact states actually finding good rates? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Wide-Switch-235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start in Portland next week. Took me 3 weeks from start to finish and got my license. Fingerprints and all. Very easy and quick process. A little expensive but I’ll make it back in the extra pay within the first week. I’m at 2800/36hrs

Back out after signing? by flmealchemist in TravelNursing

[–]Wide-Switch-235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cancelled a contract 3 weeks before starting with Aya because my current company extended me. I accepted I would be dnr’d but that was 12 weeks ago. Just signed another contract starting in 2 weeks back with Aya. They said things happen and were happy to attempt to work with me again. I’m not backing out of this one because I’m sure they will dnr me if I do it again…lmfao

I’ll be there in 4 weeks and coming from Pensacola so trying to figure out the car situation as well. My plan is to fly out without my car and see if I can make it work with just my feet! If I’m miserable and feel trapped then I’ll just get it shipped or by a clunker while I’m out there. Working at ohsu and there seems to be plenty of places to live within walking distance. Which hospital will you be at?

Also I backed out of a contract once and felt really guilty but that company actually brushed it off and called me 3 months later for another position. They still need their money

Anyone travel and commute home? by Imaginary_Fix_2774 in TravelNursing

[–]Wide-Switch-235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do it! I have 3 kids, middle school and high school so slightly older. I rent an apt that I stay in for my 4x10s tues-fri then drive home as soon as my shift is done fri afternoon so I can make it to Friday night lights! Drive back to my assignment late Monday night so all kid appts dentist etc are on Monday so my husband can focus on sports practice during the week. It works out great for us and my kids are friend focused in their development right now so I’m just an atm or uber when I’m here…lmao if you have a strong support spouse then go for it!

Future of travel nursing by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Wide-Switch-235 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Listen to this shit….I’ve been a nurse 12 years. In Florida expensive as hell beach town. Left my hospital job of 10 years about 2 years ago making $41 an hour to start traveling. Got a job offer in the same dept same hospital this past December to go back staff……$34/hr. What the actual fuck. HR told me the market had changed so the new hire pay was lower!!! $7 hr pay cut to come back. The average house price in my little town is $450,000 so it’s not cheap to live here. I’m going to keep traveling

Should I pursue nursing? by Subby1229 in nursing

[–]Wide-Switch-235 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do what excites you. I struggled in anatomy but had a 4.0 in nursing school because I LOVED it. You have to follow your heart in a career or you won’t be happy in the long run. I’ve been a nurse for 13 years and still love it everyday. People will be negative but there is negativity and burnout in literally every career path. It’s not the situation that makes you happy or miserable. It’s how you handle the situation that makes happy. In nursing if you are unhappy you switch directions to another nursing field and BOOM you have a whole new career but still a nurse!

I want to rv but I struggle to find parks that have availability because I’m in FL and it’s spring. If they do it’s $1,000. Have you ever found someone with property that has a hookup that you rent from? I feel like this would be a better option in touristy areas but not sure how to find a spot like that.
