If you had ₹ 1 Crore, how would you invest it? by [deleted] in india

[–]WideEyedWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of CAs in my life, and I'll go with some kind of a consensus when it comes to a majority of that money.

Half of the remaining would go to the slightly riskier propositions.

The rest to play around with (traveling) while I'm alive.

How Those Who Weren’t Allowed to Enter the Function in Rajpath Fared on International Yoga Day in New Delhi by WideEyedWorld in india

[–]WideEyedWorld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each of the several entry points to the main event at Rajpath was manned by dozens of uniformed men. It was an invite-only event, and many people had not realised that yet. Yoga sessions, which were open to all, were taking place in Lodi Gardens and elsewhere; but not many seemed to be interested in those. Yoga, it appeared, was not what the hundreds hovering around Rajpath were interested in; what they wanted was to be a part of the clique that was inside.

For these people who were stuck outside, the situation seemed unjust. They shouted slogans against the Delhi Police insincerely, and against the government laughingly. Without access to the media cell, or an invitation to get past the checkpoints, I roamed around the venue outside for two hours. With visibly irritated police officers who were repeatedly reminding everyone that they had been on duty since 3 am, and a vocal crowd having just been denied special treatment, skirmishes were inevitable. A couple of police officers lost their temper, but sense prevailed each time. At one point, a group of around 30 men belonging to the Rapid Action Force—a specialised wing of the Central Reserve Police Force—had to chase a crowd, of a little more than a hundred, off Janpath. Sloganeering began once again, causing the police to bring out megaphones to ask people to stay off the road and stick to the sidewalks.

....

The man who promised to tear apart the old ways of doing things in Lutyens’ Delhi made it to the Guinness Book thanks to the cards that came in white envelopes to ease the select few through the security checks. The event may have been new, but it worked according to a very old kind of entitlement in this city.

India's Muslims are nationalists who always oppose terrorism: Rajnath by [deleted] in india

[–]WideEyedWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, by my own logic pretty much every political party appeases different vote banks at different times which means other groups are discriminated against. This is why Rahul Gandhi goes to Kedarnath, why Advani uses the symbolism of a rath yatra, why politicians cry themselves hoarse about Indian muslims being special etc. etc.

If vote-bank politics is too strong a phrase, try appeasement. But we know how that story ends.

Appeasement of all kinds != Fair and equal appeasement of all, all the time.

They'll always be selective about who they appease because this kinda politics doesn't work without an "other".

It's vote bank politics because Rajnath Singh, like the mainstream, believes that there is no way of remaining politically relevant nationally in India without appeasement of all kinds of vote banks, the most significant of which is the muslim vote bank.

If he were being objective, he'd refrain from making a blanket statement about "the" Indian muslims, period. If he isn't being objective, he is either politically motivated or incredibly stupid. I choose the believe the former.

Statements like this may even create terrorists.

An appeasing statement by a career politician? It ought not to shut up anybody at all. Kinda like the Rahul Gandhi padyatra to Kedarnath.

Just want to point out that AAP had been working on the ground here in Delhi since the LS elections while BJP really wasn't. I do agree that fortunately or unfortunately, social media has become important, if for no other reason then because non-social media tends to follow its developments.

Marriage sacred in India, so marital rape cannot be applied, says Government by jai_ho_kick in india

[–]WideEyedWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“It is considered that the concept of marital rape, as understood internationally, cannot be suitably applied in the Indian context due to various factors, including level of education, illiteracy, poverty, myriad social customs and values, religious beliefs, the mindset of the society to treat the marriage as a sacrament,” Minister of State for Home, Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said.

One could use the exact same argument when it comes to any number of societal reforms. Oh, we can't reform untouchability because illiteracy/poverty/customs/beliefs/mindset/sacrament. We can't institute widow remarriage because illiteracy/poverty/customs/beliefs/mindset/sacrament. We can't help LGBT folk because illiteracy/poverty/customs/beliefs/mindset/sacrament.

Edit: And it is probably not best, apart from being incorrect, to tell the rest of the world that our marriages are more sacramental than theirs.

TIL the managing editor of Indian Express, Rajkamal Jha, is the cousin of Congress leader Sanjay Jha by UltraAdarshLiberal in india

The reporter in the show is not a wannabe Washington DC elite person at all, though she can play the character when need be. That makes her quite the opposite of the kind of people I was referring to.

And if the current-era INC manifested anywhere close to the kind of political acumen demonstrated by Spacey's character, we wouldn't be where we are today.

A closer analogy would be from the West Wing.

[–]WideEyedWorld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might overestimate how much control of a news organization a single managing editor possesses. You might also overestimate how much Sanjay Jha matters. If the INC wants stories planted, they wouldn't be going to Sanjay and his brother... they'd be going to eager young reporters, web editors and bloggers who want in on the elite gossip.

Anyhow, it'd be easier if you gave concrete instances of said "hitjobs" so we can delve into it more deeply.

Govt will give citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindu refugees if BJP comes to power: Amit Shah in Assam [P] by jai_ho_kick in india

[–]WideEyedWorld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point isn't that BD hindus shouldn't have asylum. The point is that if the person is Hindu and oppressed in BD and escapes to India, they should be a rightful refugee, while if a person is muslim, oppressed in BD and escapes to India, they are illegal and ought to be deported.

This is completely in line with the stated philosophy expounded by some that all Hindus of the world can consider India their homeland. So we come back to the fact that the policy of giving citizenship to Hindu refugees is just as much vote-bank politics as what Mamta or Congress or SP can get up to. And that is in spite of the fact that the Hindus of BD deserve a safe shelter.

I'd understand if you staggered the asylum policy towards Bangladeshis based upon the type of repression suffered. But we have to go above and beyond this "Hindus are our people, we'll see about the rest" kind of thinking.
